Well, howdy there internet people

It's Troy again

Good morning. It's clear and 46.
My laptop installed Windows 11 yesterday. It's been a learning curve. My first impression is, it's faster than Windows 10, and seems relatively stable. I didn't like the fact it forced me to use my Microsoft account to turn it on, and I turned that off as soon as everything finished loading.
I'll give y'all a more detailed report after I've used it for a while.
I still have an old laptop with Win XP that I haven't turned on in about 5 years... it's the OMG I've been hacked computer to at least get me on the internet and emails...

Or, I'm kidding myself. I'd just go buy a new machine with the latest bells and whistles.

In other news, it's BRISKET DAY!

Since this is a 7ib flat, not a full brisket, I'm planning on starting the grill about 9a. then trimming and seasoning the meat. On the grill about 10.

That should have it off the grill about 3 to 4 and rest til dinner time. I cook around 250° f

Anyone see flaws in the logic? Last cook was 5 pounds and up to temp in under 4 hours. I don't want it sitting around warming like last time.

Troy your plan for your brisket sounds good to me!

Windows XP laptop... I would not even bother to turn it on!

If you have an Amazon account, watch for a deal on a fire tablet, under $100 for a ten inch even less for smaller. If no Amazon account you can find a Wi-Fi tablet for about $100 as well. Either will do email and the internet.

In related news, the microchip shortage is inflating pc and laptop prices.

I hope this administration soon realizes the continuation of the trade war with China is bad for American businesses and consumers, tariffs are taxes! Whatever happened to free trade? Are there no true conservatives left? I don't eat the extra cost, I pass it on, but I don't like it! I think that may violate the no politics rule, forgive me.

Good Sunday Morning All. Clear and 48° out on the porch this morning. 72° inside and I have still not started a fire in the wood-burning heater yet this season. Temperatures are going up over the next 10 days, into the 80's, so I don't expect to have to use it yet. Because of the pronounced "La Nina" effect in the Pacific Ocean this year, I am expecting a warmer and drier winter.
While I was out walking yesterday, I had to avoid a herd of wild pigs crossing the road, seven of them to be exact. I regularly see them at the same spot, passing from a grain field just south of me on their way along a mostly dry creek bottom to the Corps of Engineers flood control lake about 300 yards across the road from my house. They never have come close to the house that I have observed, either visually or tracks, staying less than a quarter mile south. There's regularly evidence that they are hit by vehicles and provide a pulled pork feast for the buzzards and vultures. A few years ago, my wife had to stop the car for what she estimated were 30 of them.

Thanks for the likes and comments yesterday; Guy, Christian, Tom O, Ken, Joe, Rick, Gary S, Sherrel.

Eggs Benedict today Flo. Have Mel make it with Taylor Ham instead of Canadian Bacon.

I didn't spend but an hour out in the train shed yesterday. I spent most of the afternoon putting the mower deck back together after installing the two new mandrels. I had expected to do that job over a week ago, but patient-sitting took priority.
I did complete cutting and gluing all of the remaining clear styrene into the larger third floor windows of the Ramone's build. I'll start the 21 smaller ones next. I did a little more "mortaring" on the walls and I think that I have them where I want them. I took no pictures. I really feel like progress will be made much faster once I install the windows.
I have no clue what pictures to include with this morning's post, so at the risk of repeating something from last year, I will post several pictures, a before and after of a project started in January 2019. It starts with a blank place on the layout which is the first scene seen when you enter the train shed.

It was intended to be a showcase for a bunch of laser-cut wood structures that I had mostly already built.
The end result.
10-07-20 001.JPG

The reason for the significance is that I will be placing the Ramone's Salvage structure on the other side of the tracks once completed.

I did remove this end of the spur/storage track to allow room. Here's a shot of the loading docks in place.

It will actually go closer to the backdrop to allow for more room out front.

Ken - The pay raise seems tempting, but watch out for the added stress if that's the path that you choose. I learned very early on in my management career to leave the job behind once I left the parking lot at the end of the day; after seeing others burn out with ulcers and sleepless nights. I was part of a management team for a manufacturing plant with over 600 employees for 35 years. One coworker position turned over 15 times in that time frame. Good luck either way.
Guy - I wouldn't let all of the game go by without bagging one. One needs a little variety from all of those fish that your wife catches! Like you, I carry a bag with me about once a week when I go for my daily walk, and pick up the myriad of plastic bottles and aluminum cans along the road. There's actually not many and I sometimes return empty-handed. No masks though.
That long shot of the CN yard yesterday was your best ever.
Louis - She's liking the Cowboys this year. I actually watched a dozen or so plays against the Giants last week, and they're looking good. They appear to have tremendous depth this year.
Mikey - Looking forward to the pictures.
Troy - In my humble opinion, you're giving the brisket flat too long a rest afterwards. Unless of course dinner is really early.

Everyone have a great and wonderful day. Stay safe and go to the church of your choice.

Willie, from what I have seen of the Cowboys they are equally good on both sides of the ball. I agree, their depth is also impressive.

My wife makes the best breakfast! Sausage, bacon, hash browns, biscuits and sunny side eggs. All cooked to perfection and everything is served hot, she is amazing!

Good morning coffee shoppers. I do hope all are doing well! 👍
Preparing for winter here in the high dessert of Oregon. All of the grass is cut on the lawn & adjacent squares, the 2nd bay in the garage has been cleaned up with the insulated box I made out of foil coated 2" thick foam installed around the water softening system. The garage is attached to the house but is uninsulated. The second year I was here, the temp's hit a low of minus 25 for several days. That's when I built the box, and picked up two of the smallest free standing heaters I could find. I put one in the box & one in the cabinets to the left of the box, that's were the pressure tank and plumbing are located. I have the heaters set so all I have to do is plug them in when they're needed.
IMG_20211017_053054585.jpg

Went for a drive yesterday after the garage, down on the Klamath Lower Lake refuge, caught a small herd of deer in the tules (too-lee's.) I rolled slowly past to keep from spooking them, and the sun was at a bad angle, but here they are.....

A four point in front, big forked horn in back. Only one side of the horns is counted here on the left coast.
Not to leave out the friends of the birds, I had to do the same with him, slow roll by & free hand the shot.
IMG_20211016_155347082_HDR.jpg

Spider webs abound, the ones you see in the picture are streaming off my truck, you should have seen the other side with the antenna!
In non drought years, the area behind the sign to the ridge of hills in the back, would be covered in water. There has got to be a VERY good winter here, (west coast,) or a lot of people are going to be hurting that depends on the water.

OK, let's move on to some real world problem's 😬
Anybody catch the latest announcement of DC Comics in their upcoming issues? If you haven't, preview that first before looking at this next picture.......how times have changed....o_O

HAPPY MODELING, BE SAFE!

Boris, I have always said "most Baltimore sports fans are overrated, fair weather fans". For thirty five years the Orioles had the highest winning percentage in MLB and struggled to draw a million fans in most seasons.

i do bleed orange. I'm an Orioles fan for all seasons, 1970, 1988 or 2021 I follow my birds! I would have started with 1966, but I was only 3 years old. I doubt the memories I have of 1966 are truly my own.

The birds should be an above 500 team next year. The good news is the young stars will not be eligible for free agency for 3-4 years. The bad news, arbitration may still price them above our budget.

The NFL's revenue sharing, salary cap and the draft have achieved Pete Rozelle's goal of parity.

It was part of Windows update. My wife "says" she didn't touch it to get it to install. I had left it on, sitting on my desk, and when I woke it up from sleeping, it was asking me for my Microsoft credentials to finish up. Since I wasn't around it during the initial phase of the upgrade, I can't say with 100% certainty.
Terry: Over the past three days, I have had two Windows updates, but am still running Win 10. Guess my six year old laptop isn't compatible. I did not notice any prompts to "upgrade". My guess, is that if your machine "qualifies", it updates automatically.

Thanks Willie. I've pretty much talked myself out of applying for the supervisor position. Seems like the added stress and hours wouldn't be worth it. I already feel like I'm never home as it is. It would get worse with that position. I think my answer lies with finding something away from there that isn't so hard on my poor feet and lets me be home more.

Good morning all! 46 degrees heading up to a sunny 68 for the day. I have the day off, so hoping for a fun and productive day at home.

As I mentioned above, I've talked myself out of applying for the supervisor job in my department. The added money would be great, but the added work would not be great.

Going to be trying to catch up on some stuff I need to get done at home today. Hoping to get a little play time in as well.
Hope you all have a great day!
Ken

Louis: Cannot dispute the facts, but one has to look at other factors, including demographics, before condemning fickle fans. Many of those "Urban Pioneers", who moved into de-industrialized Canton, over the last 35 years, are not Sports Fans. Suburbanites, fear crime, real or imagined. Most Football is played on Sunday afternoon, baseball at night. The riots several years ago did nothing to help. Immigrant groups have their own sports preferences, but will attend if the tickets are complimentary. The average personal income has been close to stagnant since 2008. Washington,s team split the market in half. The Orioles are not the only game in town, they need to respond to competition, or die...Angelos budget not withstanding. The family needs to dip into their TV Money sock, and spend some on their team, or it may turn into another Philadelphia A's.

Sidebar: Several years ago, we met a couple at a casual social gathering in New York State. I was wearing a T shirt with the former colors and logo of the Washington Football team. These folks, (self styled intellectual snobs), complemented my shirt and my interest in Native American Culture. They were not in any way offended, but had never seen the logo, or the Buffalo Nickel, or a real Native American outside of the Academic bubble.

Not for nothing, when i was a kid, Liberty Dimes and Buffalo nickles were still in circulation. I worked with a surprisingly numerous group of real life Lenape and Seneca decedents, as well as a few Cherokees. Some became close friends, others workplace acquaintances. The railroad, despite all of its flaws, has always been diverse, and interesting.

Good morning fellow Modelers. It’s a crisp morning in my little section of Wisconsin at 44 with a real feel of 38. But in defense of Mother Nature, not a cloud to be seen and the sky is a beautiful blue.

Baseball, I can listen to the game online or the radio in the car. I have a real difficulty with TV as it seems to make the game feel so slow. I watched the last inning of the Dodger/Braves game, we were watching the grandkids and I had finished my book, so actually turned the TV on. The grandkids before bed asked to turn the Badger/Army football game on to find their parents. How the mighty Badgers have fallen these past 2 seasons. No, we did not see the grandkids parents.

NHL, missed everything. Saw the scores. Not sure what to think as it is way to early as the season just started Tuesday.

My weathering project (posted in the Weathering forum) is going my slower then I had anticipated. Most of it is I have trouble with colors and my rust seems too blackish. Testing of the DCC system went very good but I did find a trouble turnout as it interrupts the sound. It is the wood chip yard turnout on the front edge of the main aisle.

ken, not sure of your age but if that supervisor job is stressful and you seem to write that it is, do not apply. In today’s market you being currently employed is a positive to prospective employers. There is something out there for you, good luck

computers, when I retired from the day job in 2014 that was the last time I have handled a Windows based computer of my own. Terry still has a laptop she pays the bills off of and I have fixed it a few times over the years after upgrades that she feels has to be made. In my book, Turn off the automatic updates!

I do everything online using a IPadPro and have been extremely happy with it. It tells me updates are available and then I decide to do it or not.

Have a great day

11 seems to be compatible with computers built after 2017. 8th generation Intel, and 2nd generation Zen series for AMD.

Greetings all,

Saturday in the books, and now Sunday morning as well. Had to do a deep clean on the oven after the pizza extravaganza, as you can probably imagine. Had to take the door off, and pull off one kick plate. Took over two hours yesterday, but got her done. I had a baptism last night at 6pm for a family of the church. We usually do Baptisms during the SUnday morning Divine Service, but this family had members travelling who are quite concerned about the pandemic, so we had a private rite. It was fun. Baptisms are my favorite thing to do as pastor. After that, back home for a salad we got from a nearby local chain, and then watched an old movie. Slept very well. Quiet day today, not sure if I will do any train work or not. - - - - Steve J

PS: Minnesota Wild are 2-0!!
