so they don't have to pay for the holiday in between
Yeah, I wouldn't worry about that. In 2007, our contract with the govt died and I was told that we had 30 days to get out of Japan and that I could only take 5000 pounds of HHG. Ok, I got to work in throwing a lot of stuff away. I got rid of my laser disc collection and the player, I got rid of all my weights, I gave my remote control semi and racer to the mover, I got rid of the bed and dressers.

I rushed my wife's green card application through (paid for it twice), I moved to the states by myself and went 2 months leave without pay, sold 2 cars in Japan, bought another in the US, got a rental apartment, received and unpacked all of my household goods, registered the kids for school, flew back to Japan to get the family, and got them all situated as seamlessly as I could.

I was just happy to have a job.

Good morning where the thoughts of a beautiful day were dashed at wake-up! It was dark and now that the sun has risen, it’s foggy. David, it’s a great thought for the day though…

Positive thinking is a great thing.

32f degrees now and 41 later. The fog will lift around 11 or in almost 4 hours from now. Other than cleaning my work bench areas including the spray booth area I’m taking a full day off from model railroading. I’ve been going at a pretty good pace and even though we we gone for from Friday to Monday is still was at the benches almost 30 hours since mid afternoon Monday. I am not going to a work session today and did not sign up for any of the 3 OPS sessions this weekend.

Hockey on campus last night was the #1 Badgers rolling over #15 St Thomas is a good display of depth on a well balanced talented team. We’ll see if the Badgers can continue the high speed all out game tonight like they played last night. After the game there was a Teddy Bear toss. The ice sheet was covered but no count of the number of bears thrown yet. Last year was the 1st and the sold out crowd of just under 3000 tossed 1800+ bears. I think there were alot more yesterday. It’s a charity do good thing!

Terry and a plus1 (me) are cordially invited by the big cheese donor of UW sports to a dinner gathering. He has promised this week the UW football team that he personally will guarantee enough NIL (name, inmate and likeness) money to move UW Football from the bottom 1/3 nationally to the top 1/3 next season and the following 4. Now he’s pushing for more money besides his own. It’s why UW football is not able to compete in the Big Ten+ which in my eyes is BS. UW FB has 12 million in NIL money but it needs to at least double to be competitive. Terry has said no to donating more than we already give. So unless she changes her mind this will be a missed dinner. We are all in for paying athletes and academics scholarships, room and board and spending money equally across all sports and academics. But no FB or BB player should be getting a million + to play college sports! My rant is done

Enjoy the day

Good Morning All. Cloudy with some fog in the western view and 59°. The drizzly rain from yesterday seems to be over for now, leaving me with 1.6" in the gauge, respectable total. Not much change in the forecast, moderate weather for the next 5 days, cooling off for Thanksgiving, but we still have that 100% chance of heavy thunderstorms starting about dusk Sunday night til about noon on Monday. NWS must be thumping their chests after having gotten the call for rain yesterday correctly.

The weekly grocery trek went OK yesterday, albeit rather slow due to the rainy drive both ways. Had to get gas and an unexpected stop over at Target for toilet paper that my wife forgot to get earlier this week. Of course, she stayed home so I had to get it; it's as far from the front door as you can go without going out the back! At least she emptied the dishwasher for me while I was gone. Took the easy way out for supper by pulling a Ziploc of pulled pork out of the freezer. But I did make homemade Cole slaw in the mid-afternoon to go with it. Had some leftover baked Butternut Squash cubes to complete the meal.

Not sure what's going to happen today, I have no planned tasks...won't have enough laundry until tomorrow! Maybe I'll cook the Prime Rib roast that I bought yesterday. I bought Asparagus and Sweet Potatoes to go with it.

Out in the train shed yesterday, I mostly ran trains again. I also sorted out some details that I found when looking for something else last week. Some of them are white metal castings and some have been partly worked on.

I've actually been scratching my head for months trying to remember where I had stashed those car ramps on the right. I am needing them to complete a backyard mini-scene that I am doing. I also found some working streetlamps that are in need of a home.

They're slightly oversized, so I will need to put them back a bit in the layout. They were given to me by my granddaughter so I will place them somewhere. I'll work on several of these items in the next few weeks to add them where appropriate.

Haircuts - I switched from 4 times a year to 3 times when they jacked up the price.
Troy - You mentioned tariffs yesterday. In the past two months I bought a number of Chinese made engines from ScaleTrains and I was quite surprised that they were only $5 more per engine than the pre-order price that was quoted last February. That was on engines that cost ~$200@.
Todd - You're not alone. I tend to leave tools and supplies near where I was using them and make a clean-up run every few days. Sometimes my wife will pile them in my computer desk chair to prompt me!
Louis - Good luck on getting your taxes done on time. Yes, pay Caesar...but don't get into the habit of overpaying!

Everybody have a fine Friday.

Well, howdy there internet peeps and those who are dealing with taxes this late in the year.

It's Troy again.

Got a notice from the company (EAS) that I set up with to pay the EU my VAT taxes from my shopify direct sales store. I never had to pay more $5 a quarter in VAT since my sales were so low. I finally gave up the Shopify store, and went with a store front service that takes about the same percentage as Shopify, but didn't charge a monthly fee. AND the new service acts as Merchant of Record... so they do all the taxes. I get paid "royalties" or such.

The message from the EAS tax people in Ireland was basically Ireland was changing how they collect payments, and the EAS folks don't want to jump through additional hoops for us. so they were going to re-register all Shopify sellers using them for tax payment in Estonia for the same fees and payment processing to the EU.

I figured it was time to pull the plug, since my last two quarterly statements were Zero owed. This was on my year end list of things to do around tax time. Hopefully that will be closed soon.

Willie: A lot of the gaming items I posted pics of the last few months (Para-Bellum Games - out of Greece/EU) had a price increase to absorb what the companies had to pay on our behalf. $50-60 MSRP boxes of little toy soldiers went up about $4-5 dollars to deal with Tariffs. The bigger collections over $100 MSRP went up about $15-25 dollars.

But that wasn't the killer. It was the processing fee that UPS (big brown) collected from the game company, per shipment/address once the de-minimus exemption disappeared. Of course, the game company passed that on to the end consumers. It began as a $15 fee per shipment. This was on top of the shipping fee of $18 flat rate the company passed on. After two months UPS allowed a reduced processing fee down to $9 per shipment. Fortunately, I have enough of their stuff, and didn't need to order more once that fee hit.

When I decided to get back into an older game that's getting a "glow-up" with a new edition of the rules, I looked around at the gaming landscape, and started purchasing ahead for my next few projects. I figured buying stock sitting on US shelves - imported during pre-tariff times - would be cheaper. And it is.

Mantic Games (the supplier for the next few armies) has built all costs for tariffs into their MSRP for the US. It was a jump. A starter box that used to run $85 MSRP is going for $110 MSRP/direct ship out of the UK right now. The "Mega Army" box I got for $127 from a US based distributor is running $165 MSRP on the Mantic website now.

Is it terrible? No. But it cuts into the hobby cash. Everything is more expensive now. We just have to deal with it. I feel fortunate that wife and I are in a place where we're comfortable enough to afford what we need without scrimping by.

We also have fog this morning. It has settled into the valley along the rivers. May be a little hard to see, but look just above the tree line and to the right. Our house is at a little over 500' up.

30 minutes later it's moving up

Good morning all!

Happy Friday!

Was on earlier then got sidetracked with other things. Finally a moment to take a break.

Much like Toms weather, ours is not great either. Currently 44F heading up to a high of only 46F. Most of the morning fog
has dissipated. Light rain is predicted for later this morning into the evening.

Today is bedding day for both beds, so the washer and dryer are in overdrive this morning. Might have enough to do a load of
clothes as well so all laundry will be done and should have none to do this weekend. Have to take my daughter to the orthodontist
later this afternoon for her 6 week braces adjustment. Have to take her out of school early since they are strictly M-F 8-4 with no
weekend or late night appointments.

Other than that, not much else going on in my world.

Have a safe day everyone!

Good morning.
They sort of figured out our pay.
Sort of.
They doubled all our deductions, from fica to health insurance.
Now they’re trying to figure that out.
And the companies have confirmed neither of them will be paying us for our paid Thanksgiving holiday. The old company shuts down Wednesday, the new one starts Friday. Leaving everybody unemployed and unpaid for Thursday…

I just leave tools by where I used them and when I need them again I just have to remember what I last worked on with them. No priblem.

Then the better half puts them away and I can’t find them when I need them.
