Good morning all!

Kind of a bland weekend. Not a whole lot happened. We shall see what this week brings.

A cool Northern Illinois morning. Currently 29F heading up to a high of 47F. Rain is supposed to come in late tonight.

Usual Monday morning chores, nothing new there.

Have a safe day everyone!

Good morning from Rochester, Mn. We’ll leave around 9am and get home around noon. It’s only 162 miles but there is a cheese factory that is a must stop on the way. They have clean restrooms so instead of 2 we’ll do a combined 1 stop. Geez how predictable are we?

Good time with a good friend and her partner. Stayed with them last night and they have a very nice home. They are heading off to work later today just to stay for saying goodbye. They both are 68 and could have afforded to retire years ago but decided to get 25 years in at Mayo and that’s age 70 for them. When they do I’m sure we’ll be seeing each other more. We all decided next Spring to do the Alaskan cruise together out of Vancouver. Terry has been leary of being bored on an Alaskan cruise but having friends along should alleviate that issue. I’ve wanted to do it for years. It will be our 1st cruise

One of the local layout owners has decided to test out his layout tonight sending out invites yesterday for 7pm tonight. He says that he has been remodeling a nice layout to make it better for operations. He built it originally to just run display trains in DC. He did ask in the email to bring a consist of locomotives as he needs more to operate than he has. So he has switched to DCC so that alone is a big change. If he’s had help I’m not aware of it but it’s been over a year for me since I last have been there. It will be fun

Enjoy your day

Good Morning All!
48F @ 92% raining. 52F later, above 45F until Sunday. This is November? In Montana? Geesh.

Maria's HoneyDu list is getting smaller. Ya, Ya give it time. Anyway, have been working on the trackplan and Switch Servo design in the am before she gets up. Progress is slower than I like, but at least I see some. I do get out in the Train Cave everyday; well at least I try. Still cleaning out the upstairs - can't believe how much crap has amassed during our OTR stint. Do you know how many duplicates of tools, parts and materials ...etc I have? You know those big yellow lid, black box storage bins? Have 2 of those filled with PVC parts. The bins go on and on. Have been separating into garbage, keepers and possible yard sale items ( spring thing ). I actually can see the floor in *some* places.

Added another to my list. We have a small Propane wall heater in our bedroom. Yes, know it is not code, came with the house. When I went to bed last night, noticed that the pilot light was out. Quick try to lite it again no workie... probably has dust/debris in it, so take it apart and figure it out.

Day before yesterday Maria was complaining that the laundry/pantry was cold which also flowed into the mud room where my PC is. Checking stuff out, found out the the dryer vent had come off and ~40/45F stuff was coming in. Not good. Should have been easy, well I guess it was *after* removing all the stuff next to the dryer so I could pull it out for room to work; freezer, 5 shelve rack. Rack was even on wheels, but had to take some of the lower stuff off to get to the freezer plug ... 5 gallon buckets of food stuff; Soy, Flour, Rice, Brown Sugar .. etc. You should have seen the dust bunnies! Anyway, after fixing, we are back to the normal 65F in both places.

I ordered a pair of barstools for operating the layout. It's at slightly higher than countertop level, using a chair means the layout is exactly at eye level when sitting on a regular chair. While that technically is a very good viewing angle, it's not so good for operating. You have to stand up, perform whatever task you want, then sit back down.
In the retail scheme of things, a single barstool was $69.99, a pair of the same was $73.99. So, I bought two, I'll assemble and use one, and keep the second for whenever the first one bites the dust.

I got these 3 years ago and have not had any problems with them. Mine were Red though; don't know why. Amazon

Good Morning All. Mostly sunny and 62° now. Headed for the upper 80's before the day is done. Still have rain in the forecast for Wednesday, although it's been backed up to late night instead of daytime. Then we cool off for at least a week. It will still be shorts and tee shirt weather though.

Spent part of the afternoon yesterday cutting a week's worth of firewood, still working on the trees that the tornado donated last year. Most are in the woodlot part of the property so they're somewhat "out of sight, out of mind". I still have two over by the (still dry) pond to deal with. It's all in the cart now and needs to be stacked today. A couple of loads of laundry rounded off my day. A longer than average sermon at Mass yesterday, as it's the feast of St Margaret; Father John's mother was named after her so we got an in-depth history. It's a minor feast day at any other Catholic church.
Today I have to stack that firewood and I may cut up some more, depends on how I feel. We're expecting a bit of a breezy day so the warmth won't be overwhelming; not that 88° is overly warm for us. I don't know what other tasks will come up but I will take advantage of this lovely weather.

Out in the train shed yesterday, I finished installing all of the glass and shades in the windows for the Hydrocal structure. I also continued working with the signs. I have a number of paper signs that I want to look like they are painted on the walls. Many of you already know how to do this, but for others, here is a brief how-to. First I use some 400 grit sandpaper and sand down the backs of the signs to make them much thinner.

The point is to make it thin enough to be able to see the ink from behind.

I'm not ready to apply this one yet, but here is another one being done. Once cut out and ready, I apply "wet glue", thinned down Elmer's White Glue and water to both sides to soften it up and hold it in place. Then after it's added, I gently use a pair of tweezers to make it snuggle up to the brick lines.

Here are the three that I put on the side of the bar.

I had brushed an A/I wash over them as well.
Other signs on the front have been added, I still have some more to do along with the Card Room one, but I ran out of time.

Karl - Nice looking loco.
John -
I haven't been posting much lately (not that anyone really cares)
I look forward to your posts as a fellow Texan. Your weather pretty much mirrors mine and it's interesting to compare. Like me, you're still mowing at this time of year. Nice haul from the train show.
Tom O - Have a safe trip home. While it has no allure to me, my parents took an Alaskan cruise for their 40th anniversary; and liked so much that they went back 2 more times before Mom's untimely passing.

The late singer/composer Gordon Lightfoot was born on this day in 1938. He finally met up with the crew from the Edmund Fitzgerald a bit over two years ago.
Everyone have a marvelous Monday.

You will love the Alaska cruise. Going in August gave us the best weather and continuous sunlight.

Cruise lines in order of luxury & cost for Alaska to consider. You definitely get what you pay for.
1. Viking - smallest ships, usually no kids, under 1000 passengers
2. Holland America
3. Royal Caribbean

I wasnt sure I wanted to try a cruise either. My wife talked me into going for our honeymoon and I was hooked instantly.

We went with my wifes brother and his wife who got married a couple of months before us. They waited and we went together.
It was nice knowing another couple and it made shore excursions much more memorable.

I'm going to bet both of you really like the experience.

Louis:

Game was OK.... We both flubbed a bunch of rules, and I misunderstood what he said about a rule in my army so we played it way wrong and took out one of his units that shouldn't have gone away. So that part of the battle, which should have been a slog, was over in two turns. So we called it a draw instead of a me win. It might have been a him-win, but it would have been tight to get there.

Wonderful Monday. Walked outside this morning, rear tire flat on the Colorado! Didn't notice it until the icon on the dash made me look. Yup, flat as a pancake. After thinking a second and agonizing over changing the tire in the cold pre-dawn, I had a eureka moment. Knowing my air compressor in the garage has a 25 ft hose on the reel, I grabbed a 50 ft line and connected it, and as the compressor was charging I was able to drag 65 ft of hose to the rear wheel, past 2 other cars in the driveway. Soon after I had 38 psi in the tire and it only dropped a few pounds driving to work. I just dropped 1200 bucks I wasnt quite ready for on 4 new tires, but what the heck. They were worn to the wear bars and noisy as mud tires.

In other news, back from errands.

Wife wanted a Costco run, I got her some stuff.

She and our Asian friends in Vegas are really into K-dramas, and now my wife is trying all sorts of Ramen. So I was texting her pics of what Costco had, that whe probably tried with our friends in Vegas.

She and said friend are getting together in Indy this week, since that's where the company HQ for their division is. Sangria is for that visit. Girls night at the hotel! The Ramen and Pretzels are for home consumption.

Not in the photo are the wife's Rum and Vodka (Both Kirkland brand), our various nuts we snack on, TP, and trash bags. I don't have room on my whisky shelf for more bourbon right now, so that will wait.
