Amazon... they are their own worst enemy. Amazon's reliance on computers to tell them how long everything should take leads them to having unrealistic expectations.

Van drivers are the perfect example. They may have upwards of 1000 packages in a metropolitan area. Amazon says it should take no more than 10 hours to complete all deliveries, if all 1000 packages go perfectly. In the real world what is the chance that 1000 anything goes perfectly?

Van drivers cut every corner they can to make up for any lost time. Two extra steps with hundreds of packages adds up fast. Which is why van drivers save water bottles for "bathroom" breaks.

I wouldn't drive an Amazon van for $100/hour. The stress is too much to take. Most make less than $30/hour. I won't get off my 🫏 for that!
I've noticed over the past couple of months around here they have now started using the white rental vans from Enterprise, and Penske.
All they say on the side is "delivery driver" but they do have the Amazon safety vest on.

They stop in front of the house, go in the back and may not emerge with the package for 10 minutes or more, so I wondered if it wasnt
all just thrown in there packed tight,

What you say explains a lot of what I'm seeing starting to happen around here.

Are they moving away from USPS?

Many years ago, I got a Brita pitcher/filter, and have been using it for my drinking and cooking that requires water. This morning, I had a sudden need of a glass of water, and I simply poured from the tap into the glass.
I can assure anyone that doubts, the filter in the pitcher works.
Bleah...

Good morning all!

Happy Friday!

Usual Friday stuff around the house today, nothing major.

Have a "meet the teams" tonight at the high school where they introduce all the players for all the teams of the winter sports
and they will do a couple of 10 minute scrimmages and what not so we will get dinner out somewhere afterwards.

Actually spent some time running trains last night, and organizing a pile of what still needs Kadees and conspicuity stripping added.
Going to have to order some more stripping from Fusion Scale to see if they are any good. Smokebox Graphics made the best ones
but discontinued making them this summer.

Have a safe day everyone.

Good morning from So. Central Wisconsin where it’s 38f degrees going up to 66 and beyond. A great travel day. 5 hours and 5 minutes plus the required one stop. The #1 ranked Badger Women play hockey against #13 St Cloud St. Since we were being too cautious about flying during the government shutdown we decided a weekend trip to St. Cloud Minnesota in great weather was a, why not! Turns out the hockey schedule the daughter sent us a few weeks ago for his hockey was for a different team. His team plays 1 game tonight and 2 tomorrow at home. Terry has corrected the calendars. Oh well told too late or we wouldn’t be going to St Cloud which really looks like it’s the middle of nowhere.

Be well

Rough day yesterday. My wife's younger brother (67) has been battling Multiple Myeloma (blood cancer) for 17 years. He was admitted to Stanford med center on Wednesday. He passed away yesterday afternoon several hours after they took him off life support. He was told that he had 10 years, but he fought it for 17. The Stanford University Oncology Department and his wonderful wife supported his fight all those years.

Stu was a very successful finance guy in Silicon Valley. He helped take several companies public as their CFO during his working life. He was lured to Ukraine, for several years in 2006, by a lucrative job offer and the women. He became sick there and they could not determine what was wrong. He was flown to the UK where they made the diagnosis, before finally returning to the US.

He dated a lot of girls while he was in Ukraine, but ended up marrying a wonderful woman. They held their wedding in Santa Barbara, on the beach, at sunset, on 10/10/10. His wife has a daughter and SIL who escaped Ukraine 10 days before the war started and now live in Austin where his employer has an office. Stu has a son from a previous relationship.

Forgot to add this photo. I took it while out with the dog. I found out about Stu when we returned home.

Amazon made the situation worse two or three months ago saying they would no longer deliver to "back porches"
That is news to me. It may be a regional issue. The Baltimore region still delivers to back door/porch. And I hope they don't change.

I recommend you call Amazon for clarification. Amazon will make special delivery instructions for individual developments.

In many housing developments, the back doors face the roads. The front doors face a green space. I've delivered to many townhouses and condos like yours in Columbia, MD and other places. I'm grateful when those customers don't ask for a front door delivery, but some do.

Sometimes the back door is far more secure place to leave a package and much easier for the driver. Gates are not considered the back door, unless it is locked. But that should be marked as "Another safe location" and a text sent to explain why and where the package is.

I've had customers instructions ask me to throw the package over the locked gate. I'm tall enough to reach over, but sometimes even I can help but drop the package as much as 6 feet. I did what they asked.

I can tell you Amazon drivers don't care about compliments, they are meaningless. Except when Amazon pays $5 for each compliment which has happened twice, one month each time, in my 9+ years.

When it comes to rating the drivers good or bad. I complained so often that I no longer have the option to rate my delivery. I have an Amazon business account, but it is the same for my wife's personal account. They don't offer her the chance to rate the delivery anymore either. Our delivery instructions are "Please deliver to either side door, thank you" Most independent contractors follow our instructions, the van drivers seldom do.

Many drivers ignore delivery instructions, even more ignore customer's signs. I can't tell you how many times I have heard from other drivers "I ignore all customers instructions" or "There is your address, there is your package" or "You got your package didn't you?" Or the worst one of all "I didn't come here to work; I can here to get paid"

I won't even mention how many drivers bring back packages without even attempting to make a delivery.

I wish it were different, but that is the reality.

Well, I just had a minor disaster at home. I managed to drop two engines on the floor. Both engines suffered damage, and I'm currently trying to assess the damage and put everything back together.
And of course they had to be DCC/sound engines...

Sorry to hear that. I had a Roco Rh 2143 take a nose dive five feet to the floor several years ago. it survived with minor damage to the front skirt, and lost a buffer. Didn't touch the coupler. After the repair to the front skirt and a replacement buffer, I don't even remember which end hit the floor.

Amazon began with rental vans. It was only a year or so later they started getting the grey vans with Amazon logos. They still use rental vans to fill in. At first, they couldn't get enough vans to fill their needs. There are between 50-100 rental vans at each of the various Amazon stations in the Baltimore region

Originally Amazon only bought Mercedes vans, but they couldn't fill the orders. Now they buy anything they can get.

Did you ever see an Amazon van that wasn't damaged? If you did it was likely new.
Delivery person doesn’t comprehend
Most don't care
Or put this on your sign:
Smile, you're on candid camera.
Many camera systems tell you when they are recording. I always smile and say, "good morning, thank you for your order."
You see that glow flashing in the corner of your eye? That's your career dissipation light. It just went into high gear.
If only it was so easy to replace these scum bags.

Amazon is widely reported to have one of the highest worker turnover rates in the U.S

To expand the pool of workers Amazon doesn't test for marijuana use.

I'm wondering when Amazon will run out of new people to hire.

Good Morning All. Mostly clear and 64°, sure beats that 29° at this time on Monday. It will stay like this with highs in the mid-80's until Wednesday when they think that it will rain.

Yesterday went well to a point; grocery trek was uneventful, we stopped at Jersey Mike's for subs to go, I got a haircut and gassed up the car. Then a problem. We had noted road maintenance on IH35 northbound when we were headed south earlier. GPS showed a 7 mile backup for the trip home, so I took an alternate route through the small town of Krum TX; no biggie as we occasionally have to take this route. But yesterday was the day that the local guys decided to shut down one lane through town on the state highway. Can't bypass on the east side because of the BNSF railroad tracks that run roughly parallel, so I bypassed on the west by going through neighborhoods on local streets; none of which make a direct run. Did manage to get around, just was more trouble. GPS didn't show that or I could have taken a different alternate route over on the east side of the Interstate. There's actually 3 different alternate routes to take when the Interstate is backed up. Problem is that the maintenance that they were doing was at the one bridge where there are no frontage roads to relieve the traffic. The new construction started recently on the 50 mile stretch from Denton to the Oklahoma border will change that. They're also adding a third lane in each direction. Currently I have to drive through 4 separate projects to get to the grocery store. There's many more to the north.
Today starts with the incessant dishwasher and a load of laundry. Nothing needs mowing right now so I'll be doing firewood duty just to get ahead and get some exercise. Waiting in the wings are the Tomato and Pepper plants to be removed from the garden, after the frost earlier in the week. I've got to remove all of the cages and T-posts supporting them.

Out in the train shed yesterday, I weathered the sign that I so painstakingly painted on the side of the Hydrocal structure. It seems such a shame to do so, but reality isn't always pretty.

I used a piece of 400 grit sandpaper to get some of the brickwork to show through; and then a black AI wash to tone down the white lettering. Wife thinks that I should have left it alone...too late now! She doesn't understand that the original was painted 100 years ago, and my layout is set mostly in the 80's. I'll study it later today and I may add some weathering powders as well.

Patrick - Tough situation for your son, as the windows are best done when the siding is off the house. They can be done with the siding installed but it is much more difficult and labor-intensive.
David (Marlin) - I know what you mean about understanding investments. Back when I had a professional investment advisor, he had me invested in a REIT and an annuity, among other things. We didn't understand the fee structure of either. I finally escaped after 7 years of each without making any noticeable gain. That's one reason why he became my ex-financial advisor shortly after I retired. Self-management was the best financial move that I ever made.
Ken - There is nothing straightforward about the insurance business.
Troy - Looks like a nice dent in the package as well.
Louis - Amazon, on their website, claims to not deliver to back doors here, but the 3rd party delivery service here does. It also depends on the driver as I posted yesterday. Living where I do, we're at or near the end of the route most of the time, and deliveries after dark will end up on the porch with the light on.

Everyone have a great Friday and a wonderful weekend. I'll be grilling hunks of red meat for the next few days, so come on by.

David-Sorry for your family's loss.

My thoughts and prayers goes out to you and your family.

Not very often!

Only time I have seen them in pristine condition is on the back of a semi coming from the factory.

They need to take a page from UPS! Never see a damaged or unclean UPS truck. One of the Ryder locations I worked
at shared the property with UPS. Every night the trucks were pulled inside and washed and loaded for the next day.
The drivers pulled them out the next morning. Pretty streamlined operation to watch.
