Good morning from So. Central Wisconsin. Nicer today than yesterday with low 50’s being the high for the day. Nicer only because the wind will be less at around 10mph instead of the 15 to 20 yesterday.

I was very frustrated with Walthers yesterday as I could not get the great deal (IMO) from their 15 day sales event to work for me. Called a client in California and he ordered them for me. I really and totally understand why some companies have out-sourced customer service call centers to overseas. But Walthers is helpless and I feel might be sharing with Kalmbach’s just as bad CS call center!

I started watching TV yesterday as the #1 Badger Women’s hockey lost the 1st time this year to #2 Ohio State. Then Wisconsin #3 Volleyball lost to #16 Purdue in 5 thrilling sets. Then to top it off I watched some of the #1 ranked Men’s Hockey lose to #6 Michigan State. From 5pm to 8:30 was not all that enjoyable. Both Badger Women’s teams have been devastated by injuries to major players and it just had to catch up sooner then later. Men’s Hockey, that was the second time I have watched them this season. I think from what I saw they just got beat by another good team. It’s why we play sports!

I have a mild sore throat and I already did a negative Covid test. I think it’s more from yelling at the TV monitor yesterday! Warm, not hot diet Dr Pepper in a mug is what I am sipping on this morning.

401k! If the company offers a match, every financial planner in the world will tell you to contribute. If you really can save and depending on your age you can do well managing your own investments. But it is lots of work and it’s why fund management companies make so damn much profit for themselves. I had a 7% match from the company for 16 of the 21 years I was in it. The last 5 years I worked it was a 3% match. There was only 1 year of the 21 years where there was no match at all. After 9 years of retirement I completely moved the funds this past September. Like any other investment tool the best advice is talk to an investment councilor about your specific needs.

enjoy the day

Good afternoon all. A large coffee and a Fondant Fancy please, Flo. (Because of rationing still in place after WW2 a little Fondant Fancy was the first 'birthday cake' I ever had)

The grandchildren are playing with their new presents. Lego and dolls house furniture is on the floor.
The womenfolk are 'rabbiting on' about nothing.

Customer Service.
The Government is talking of getting firms to improve customer service. Possible fines for poor service.
Funny how things can get bad then the Government (all parties) say things need improving when an election is on the horizon.

Happy Saturday all.

Weekend is here to all the working folks. For the retired folks, does it matter anymore? My retired father-in-law always used to say every day is Saturday.

Going to do leaves one more time today. Most have now come down. What comes down after today (which isn't many) can blow around the neighborhood till spring.

Get the laundry, and grocery trip done then its layout time.

Have a safe day everyone!

Then they do the opposite, or totally disregard it after the election!
I worked in customer service/sales my last 21 years working. Government can mandate all the crap they want, it’s just interfering with how a company wants to operate. The best thing for a company or business with consistently poor CS is for the consumer not to go back and buy again from them. The company either gets the message and fixes the issues or losses business, which means money.

But, I am a perfect example of ignoring that advice. I have known about Walthers pathetically poor CS for years. I continue though to buy from them. I was just there Thursday at the showroom where the sales staff couldn‘t have nicer or more helpful. I enlisted a weathering client to purchase the bulkhead flats because I couldn’t get the discount code to work. I should have walked away, emailed the company and complained. But nope, I found a work around

Walthers would be a hard company to walk away from. They have such a widespread group of products. Plus, there one of the few MR MFGs who can deliver a product in a timly manner.

Agreed. I've really never had a problem with them, then again, I only deal with them for stuff no one else has in stock. I rarely have to contact customer service. Tom's issue seems to be with the order bots, that frequently ignore sale codes, (on purpose?). The big instant problem with off shore customer service is that they frequently cannot comprehend what you are talking about, where as domestic customer service carousels, are often deliberately obtuse.

Good Morning All. Clear and 49°, good to see the sun after two days of clouds/fog. No wind to speak of today, that will change briefly tomorrow around noon when moderate SE winds bring enough moisture from the Gulf to give us a 60% chance of rain in the early afternoon. We shall see.

Busy day yesterday starting with the delayed morning grocery trek. I dislike shopping on Fridays because it is more crowded, made worse since several night shift re-stockers were no-shows at Kroger; and there were pallets and buggies blocking most aisles. Then to add to the issues, several employees from the local beer/wine distributor were assembling a display rack and using a normally busy aisle in the meat department to do it in. On the bright side, they weren't out of anything, although I had to request the rutabagas which a produce employee went to get from the back. There were two manned checkout lanes open, both with baggers so there was minimal wait. Noted that gasoline price had jumped from $2.69/gal earlier in the week to $2.85/gal yesterday, a significant jump.
I got home and had to park 125' away from the door and carry all of the groceries (3 trips), since the roofer was there and his truck (and the other car) was blocking the way. Then I had to walk the same distance to load my wife's vacation luggage into the car, none of which was ready to allow me to combine trips back for groceries!:( Then eat lunch, pay off the roofer, take a nap, and then empty the dishwasher from the load Thursday night. Unfortunately the roofer is a chatty person and that took much longer than it needed to take. His helper yesterday was his 10 year old son. He also worked at a much slower pace than his crews did. His kids are home-schooled so I had to listen to that as well. BTW, I agree that home-schooling is a good thing for some, especially in his school district. When will America wake up???

My #2 daughter's family went to South Padre Island early to watch the ultimately partially failed launch of the SpaceX rocket this morning. My grandson supposedly got some drone camera footage.

Out in the train shed yesterday, I worked on a project that I started earlier in the week. I received as a Christmas present a few years ago, 120 painted figures made in China from one of my grandkids. I have posted before that I have to rework almost all of them in order to use them. If they were 6' away, there would be no issues, but most of my figures are less than 24" from the viewing point.
Here's examples of nine that I am targeting right now.

As you can see, the paint is very sloppily applied, and the colors are only worn by someone in San Francisco or London; orange, red or green pants for example.
Another problem is the "Oriental bun" on their heads, otherwise known as the sprue attachment point.
IMG_0951.JPG

There's also more than needed mold flash. You may notice that all of these figures are poor copies or rip-offs of Preiser figures.
The first thing that I do after trimming the sprue attachment and excess flash is give them some blue jeans. I sometimes leave the shirt colors as is, and I change the hair color regularly. Everyone has black hair out of the package.
Here's the first one that I attacked.
IMG_0948.001.JPG

Note the excess paint on the neck, the shoes, and the splotch on his hand. Also the flash on the neck and the poorly painted shirt.
After I cleaned up the neck area, I decided to keep the pink shirt, as I have a matching paint, but the pants became blue jeans.

While in the picture, you can see some green shading under the blue, that is not visible under normal layout lighting conditions.
This is the first pass, I need to scrape a little more pink off the arm and define the shirt/pants line a little better; which I can also fix by giving him a belt.
By the way, I decided on which figure to add to the men's bicycle that I posted about a week ago.

Sauerkraut - I have never had bad commercial sauerkraut, but homemade is so much better without the additives.
401k - My company rarely made any matches to our contributions, but the plan allowed for some self-management; which I took advantage of. Eventually around 2005, I hired a financial advisor who I kept until I retired in 2015. In my case it was money wasted. I lost six figures in 2008-2009 because he advised me to stick it out. I did make most of it back (helped by my continuing contributions) in 2011-2012. In the overall scheme of things though, I kept several IRA's out of his hands (he still managed some) which was a smart move on my part, as I moved those investments into safe money market funds. Overall, I recommend 401k plans, but I would advise that one look carefully at the options and manage them themselves. After retirement, I rolled the entire 401k into one of my existing traditional IRA's where I could fully control it.
Tom O - My son also works for the rain forest company in their cloud division. I don't know if he had to sign an NDA or not, never asked. He does discuss that business some with us, mostly his pay/stock options. In his case, it is well worth it for him pay-wise.
Maybe by watching those teams on the TV, you jinxed them!;)
Tom - Enjoy the train show.
Mike -
Walthers would be a hard company to walk away from. They have such a widespread group of products.
In addition, they are just about the only company that offers real rail-sized industries. While their instructions leave a lot to be desired, once you get used to their products that can be overcome.

Mickey Mouse is 95 years old today. For the gearheads out there, today is Denny Hamlin's 43rd.
Everyone have a super Saturday.

Aldi all meat jumbo hotdogs, boiled, they are excellent! A can of Aldi's brand sauerkraut and Resser's Deviled Egg Potato salad. I went all out and heated the sauerkraut in the microwave!
LOUIS - I thank you for starting this .. A really quick meal and a good one. I think I will have it at least once a week? I will have to try the ALDI franks, but I sure do like the Nathan Brand!
p.s. I like the sauerkraut cold, but heated the franks for 1 minute in the M-wave.
FYI - I ate half that jar of kraut!

Busy day yesterday starting with the delayed morning grocery trek. I dislike shopping on Fridays

I dislike shopping on Fridays as well. The hassle and stress it brings. To me the food does not seem fresh. A case of getting rid of nearly out of date items at an inflated weekend price.

Walthers and the like. I tend to now buy from stores that sell 'what I actually want'. I have not bought from Walthers, but the models look excellent (for U.S. railroad modellers). Previously I bought model buildings that I thought were 'right' for my layout based around Leeds. Then I saw some backscenes that were of Leeds & West Yorkshire. They make my old buildings look like TT scale! Now I am looking for buildings that are correct to Leeds.

Do you take "tag alongs"?
Darn -- I'm just too far away!

I'm in "sticker shock" today!
Took the CRV in to have the electrical tow connection repaired where I had bumped it in a high curb,
oil change, radiator flush, new antifreeze, belt replaced, new battery, tires rotated -- bill was $649.00.
Frigging battery was $187 of that and I had furnished my own antifreeze, oil and filter. I only use percolator filter and Quaker State 0W-5w20. My BIL ran his CRV 400,000 plus miles before the engine finally gave up!

WILLIE - You are going to paint eyebrows on each figure - aren't you?

Afternoon All,

Started out the day with very overcast skies. The HOA decorations only took about an hour since we had 5-6 people helping. After that I put the spare on the Rouge then we took it to Wally World for tires (black Friday sale). That's when the day went to crap. I was inside and MOH let me know the car had died again.  . After a couple of tries we got it started and was driving to the local repair shop (close to us) but the car died in a major intersection.:mad::mad: waiting on a light. The good thing was 2 other guys helped me push it through the intersection and into a parking lot 😍😍😍where son came and jumped it and we made it to the repair shop. Diagnosis: dead alternator. Between everything this weekend it's probably going to run about $1500.

David- Nice job on the rail gun. Dad and I are the only family members (extended) that like mincemeat. We only get it Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Sherrel- I think I got you beat buddy.

I hope everyone has a good night.

Oh, I know. I had put a battery in my 2019 Jeep a couple of months ago. Battery was close to $200.00. Took me all of 5 minutes to change. The check engine light came on for some electrical disruption code. Chrysler charged me $110.00 to clear the code.

I have $300.00 in my battery!

I believe that I heard that story (similar) a couple times before.
I stay away from dealers unless it is a warranty item!
I think might be apply called Highway Robbery!
Mike: Spend 50 to 60 dollars and get yourself a code reader. Most likely you could have reset the code yourself.
