I mentioned earlier that our daughter and family were not allowed to enter their house because some ordnance had been found.
Update.
Apparently an 'old soldier' had kept a 'few things' from WW2. He has died and family clearing his house found the ordnance.
Bomb Squad was called to deal with it.
Now a search has begun to see if there is anymore.
Meanwhile a large number of families are not allowed in their homes.
Daughter, SiL and grandchildren sleeping here tonight.

I bought mine from my local model shop. He does not have anymore left, otherwise I would have bought another. :D

Not sure if Rails of Sheffield have any. (No affiliation)
Yeah, I have been searching all over. It seems to have been a limited run or something as they were gone very quickly. It's all timing. Got into the UK models only since this past December, so missed the boat.

While John is still kicking, we must bid Adieu to Maj Hot Lipps (the other one, Lorretta Swit)

Saw her in Night of the Iguana at The Lyric Opera House, in downtown Baltimore...that was around 1985. RIP Hot Lips.

Another rainy, cold, blustery day. Sensor in the shed reading the same as yesterday. My lifepo4 battery in the shed took almost all day to recharge yesterday with one 365 watt panel on my carport. Built the battery from scratch with 4 EVE LF280K prismatic cells. Used a JK BMS to keep the thing from blowing up. Keeps the batteries balanced as well. Normally gets charged in less than 2 hours. I use the battery to run my pond in the back. If we have a prolonged loss of mains, then it will be brought into the house and tied to my inverter to run the fridge. Since house is LP gas, I can tie the stove to one of my 25# tanks.

Noticeable? How so? I’ve never gotten sparks (except for a short) so it seems better to you…

Do you also use graphite?

I still use the 70% Isopropyl Alcohol and then add graphite. I have plenty of orderless mineral spirits I could switch to. When I ran more I’d go 6 months between track cleaning. Now I’m cleaning every couple months
A few weeks ago I posted a link to a model railroad magazine article that explained why you don’t want to use the alcohol. I’ll try and find it again.

A few years ago, my buddy was in charge of installing a fiber run between the bases in Sasebo. While trenching, they came upon some bombs and grenades. The Japanese used porcelain to encapsulate the explosive charge for their grenades. The porcelain becomes the shrapnel. Nice keepsake once emptied out. The bombs, not so much.

Years ago, I built a 300B SET audio amp. Started reading about tube amps and the sound they can produce so gave it a shot. Found a blog online and wrote to the guy. Although the blog was old, he responded and gave me some tips. I ended up combining his mono blocks to a stereo set as I didn't want to have to deal with separates. May have been better though as this thing weighs a ton.

This thing is rated at 8 watts per channel but since it puts out 1st, 2nd, 3rd order harmonics, the sound is about the same as my 50 watter. And much fuller. Started with carbon resistors for that fat fuzzy sound. But, I wanted a more rounded amp to play other stuff besides female vocals, so I ended up replacing them with Vishay metal foil resistors. These have a .001% accuracy versus the 10% of the carbons. The sound really cleared up after that.

What does this have to do with model railroading? Well, everytime I play train sounds, it comes out sounding like Diana Krall haha

Well, howdy there internet peeps and those who didn't go boom!

It's Troy again.

Slept in until 6a again. This is getting to be habit after a few years of 4a rises. Hopefully the later sleep in times will stick around.

I finished the audiobook production for book zero in my Canadian series. The AI voices company is about to start charging. I'm in the free beta test program, and didn't get near enough of done. But their voicing has radically improved in the last six months.

Got a lot of rebasing done last evening, but I decided to rearrange the light bar on my desk. It's LED tape strips stuck to an inverted U shape. The leg supports had it to the rear of the desk. I've been fighting with the light coverage it gives, and decided to move the supports. I tried to do so in-situ so I didn't have to undo the cordage.

Well, I knocked stuff off in the process. The tub of Vallejo texture putty (course pumice) bounced on the floor and splattered some. So, I scraped it up, and had enough to putty up four bases. Tonight I'll work on puttying up the rest of what I re-based. After that, it's one more unit of Union troops, and a bunch of cannons to rebase.

Wife says were going to buy more dirt today.

In our condo community, the master gardener lady passed (unexpectedly) away two years ago. And there is a garden spot across from her old unit dedicated as "Carol's Garden". (Same name as my wife). And my wife has been growing Coleus. She has to cut starts, and nurture them over the winter in her inside window garden. Well, the lady that made "Carol's Garden" wanted some Coleus if my wife had any left.

So, wife made sure to keep a couple more than she needed.

And the neighbor who wanted them, tried to drive her car through the local CVS pharmacy building. Gave it a real good dent, and broke her foot. So, she's not doing any major planting, or carrying watering cans. And my wife doesn't want to just intrude and take the coleus out without direction.

So, she'll get a couple of generic planters, some more potting soil, and put them into our front garden until she hears from Broken Foot lady.

Hope all of that makes sense. I just go along to get lunch, and load the bag of dirt into the trunk/boot of the car.

Good morning gang!

Last night’s thunderstorm have passed and the sun is out, looks like a good day on tap with a high near 70. Gonna head to the local VFD’s carnival tonight for a little fun and pit beef. Today will be a trip to HD for some supplies. Then work on the layout and a cleanup of the basement prior to surgery next week. Tomorrow will be the lawn. Also, tomorrow will be instructional for son number four and his mother on how to cut the grass during my recuperation. This ought to be fun.

If it’s MRH I have read it and discarded using mineral spirits.

However the reason I question it now is someone I trust, DAVE will give a real world response. I’m a little tired of Mr Know it All at MRH
It’s not so much mineral spirits but a non-polar solvent. Most of the better electrical contact cleaners are non-polar. I use WD-40 contact cleaner (not normal WD-40 penetrating oil).

This is the article, which I got from a topic on the JNSForum.com (Japanese N Scale Forum)

It describes the what’s and whys and most people I know who’ve switched from isopropyl to a non-polar cleaner have had much better results

Good morning at 4:38 Las Vegas time! 2 hours different then home in Wisconsin (6:38) but damn I feel like I’m prepping for hell! It’s 87f degrees heading to 106 or 110 depending on the weather app I read. The pool temperature a few minutes ago was showing 70. I left the shade sails open over the pool yesterday and over night.

I decided I don’t particularly enjoy the misters on the patio. Definitely moistens the pages of the book I was reading. But of course with this dry heat they dry quickly! Northbound Lights: Tracks Across Michigan and Wisconsin. A decent read, nice pictures. I know zippo about Michigan RR but it caught my eye last week. One of too many book/magazine purchases last week.

Terry and Nicole will be here around noon. We will meet them for lunch even though I did some grocery shopping the brother said it’s his and the g/f process. He’s great in the kitchen so when I asked him why they eat out so much he said. Coffee and toast for breakfast for him, yogurt and water for her. He golfs almost every day and grabs something at the course. Dinner is out because she he says is an absolute disaster in the kitchen. They have even taken lessons together, she not a ditz she just can’t cook. Normally his past g/f have been great in the kitchen but not this one.

The brother to my eye is moving slow but pretty good. He handles pain well and has some discomfort at times but he thinks it’s more the incision than anything. Last night though before bed he had 2 Tylenol with Codine. That was surprising but was suggested by his doctor.

I had to look up what TACO means in today’s world when they write it. It’s not chirzo for sure. I want to believe there is a plan but I’m doubting myself!

Enjoy the day

More of our travelogue.

Last Tuesday after our visit at the LDS temple in Tokyo we went wandering around and I posted a few pics of that. We then went with my sister in law to dinner for Unagi (salt water eel). It was not far from the Tokyo Sky Tree Tv tower. It’s the tallest tower and third tallest structure in the world according to Wikipedia. We did not go up this trip. It had two observation decks. One at 350m and one at 450m. We did go up on our last trip.

Unagi is good when done right. It has a slightly sweet sauce and is usually served atop rice or as sushi. The first thing that came out were grilled pieces of eel. The livers, some meat, other insides, heads, and fin parts. They were singed on the sides so weren’t bad as they that grilled charcoal taste. Then the main meal came and it was wet good. Luckily it was my sister in laws treat as it was expensive as well.

After that we took the Ginza line subway and the Yurikamome private line back to the hotel. The Yurikamome is a rubber tired train that how’s from Shimbashi and does a few stops and then goes across the Rainbow Bridge to Odaiba. It’s totally unmanned and I sat in the rear seat (where a driver would be) and took a night shot after we went over the bridge.

Next morning, Wednesday, was another breakfast of champions at the Hilton breakfast buffet. Not as much as the day before. Since we paid good money for it I ate big every morning and just ate light most of the days. However Wednesday I had a lunch appointment with a friend from Taiwan who lives and works in Tokyo. I met the guy at the Apple developer conference in San Francisco in 2015. In 2017 I went to Taiwan and visited him and an other guy I had met at the conference. Now we met up again in Tokyo. That will be next post.

Before I went to meet this friend I went to Akihabara Electric Town on the Yamanote Line train (it’s a big loop around Tokyo and runs trains every 5-8 minutes in busy times in each direction). Stores don’t open it seems until 11am and I got to my destination about 15-20 minutes early and had to wait. It was a small store that only sells capsule toys (gachapon / gashapon) plus they also sell a small amount of anime type figures in the back of the store. They often have older gachapon toys unlike most of the gachapon stations in big malls and department stores. (Capsule toys are big in Japan — I’ll make a post about it separately at some point). They also have the latest ones but I like to get the more off beat and weird ones or specialty ones and not the current fad Disney or anime based ones. I bought 6 and then there happened to be the Poppondetta used train store on the second floor (the red sign in the pic). Poppondetta is a major model train retailer and they also sell some of their own stuff they’ve commissioned. This was full of used. I don’t speak Japanese so I couldn’t read the various signs that described the various items. A lot of them seemed rather expensive (complete sets etc). They also had individualized cars and power cars and locomotives in cellophane bags all organized by period etc and they were priced ok it seems so if you needed a certain car to replace something you could probably find it.

IMG_8527.jpeg

Japan is mostly N scale though there is a good amount of H0 available. Most of this store was Japanese B but had some Japanese H0 and some foreign H0 like some Märklin and Bachman. Also had some TOMY PLARAIL. Interesting store. I didn’t spend money.

IMG_8530.jpeg

Here is a random shot from a street in Akihabara so you can get a feel for what it’s like. Game and anime and hobby and electronics stores everywhere.

IMG_8529.jpeg

Then off to Ebisu for my lunch appointment on the Yamanote line again (it’s green). This particular train is a series E235. Often referred to (at least by foreigners) as the microwave oven train due to the way the front is designed.

On the way to Ebisu there was this Chinese lady (possibly a monk) with Mao backpack (that’s an image of Mao on the bag). She had a yellow cap with a lotus or something and a Chinese slogan on it and when she took it off her head was shaved bald. Between that and style light robe I guessed she was a monk.

IMG_8540.jpeg

After I got to Ebisu I met friend and we went into this tall building up to the 38th floor, where there was a lot of restaurants. We went to a Yakiniku restaurant where we sat with seats looking out over the city. Yakiniku is grilled meat. This seems to have been a Korean run one as it served kimchi and some other typically Korean pickled vegetables. There is a heated grill built into the table top and you grill your own. We had two kinds of beef and some shrimp. It was super delicious.

The first city only shots were taken from the 38th floor but not from the restaurant. The others were from our seats at the restaurant.

After lunch he and I walked around and he showed me some atriums and outdoor plazas around a shopping area and just takes for a while. Eventually I had to leave to meet my family back at the Tokyo LDS Temple. We had another appointment. This time I got some pics without family in them. (Well the night one has my daughter but she’s mostly in the dark it seems. I may see if I have one without to swap out)

IMG_8551.jpegIMG_8555.jpeg

My daughter had found that there is a bakery owned by a relation of the Totoro guy Miyazaki (who does the Ghibli movies) and they have the only licensed Totoro baked goods. They sell out really fast but my sister in law had phoned in an order to reserve some so we ate Totoro cream puffs after we were done at our appointment.
