Good morning Crew. Nope I’m not walking this morning outside. After 8 hours of standing on my feet operating trains over the last 2 days I was tired. Sunday my steps at the session were over my daily goal of 8000 steps with 11,203. My walking pace is 2155 steps per mile. Monday was just 5926 but I did walk around the neighborhood with Terry last night at 3062 steps. I’m taking a break this morning. We are going shopping after the passport renewnal this morning, so I should get plenty of steps in

It’s 51f degrees right now heading into the high 70’s. The winds are calm at 2 mph. With a very slight chance of rain the WeatherChannel app is telling me it will be like this the next few days.

I have posted some pictures of the 2 sessions I attended on my FB page. At the Wisconsin River Valley and Terminal Railroad in HO scale. It’s mainly a page for my weathering and adventures on the layout. Also there are pictures of Sunday’s sessions on a few Facebook pages but mainly at the BN Marias Pass layout page. The BN Marias Pass is one of the nicest, best running layouts I have run on. The scenery is top notch, it’s big with over a 750’ mainline but best of all because the equipment is generally flawless it’s fun. Fully signaled with dispatching and train masters it just keeps getting better every time. 16 of us were there including 5 guys from the Kansas City area. Plus the owner and his wife Alan and Darcy Schroeder are 2 of the nicest people you could ever want to meet. A few pics

Today is passport renewnal at a distant post office at 10 and 10:20am. We need to venture out at 9:30 for the 20minute + drive. The son and his girl friend flew back to Austin around 11 yesterday morning. It was good to have him home for a couple days. He lives a tough life. Today they fly out to Cancun as his girl friend was a top 10 employee where she works and won the trip all expenses paid. The son is her plus 1.

The daughter, son and Terry attended Saturday the Berkshire Hathaway annual stockholders meeting. BK according to the son needs to be spending some of that massive amount of cash they have. Warren is looking for the prices to be right to make a big splash instead of a bunch of little ones. Terry has mixed feelings as she believes they should have been spending this year but the stocks have done so well for us she is not going to question them. Mr Buffet did indicate this will be his last investor meeting. I hate meetings and especially dislike stockholders meetings as an absolute waste of time but the BK meeting is unique that leadership is open to questions off the floor. This was the first meeting for the son and daughter and the 11th for Terry. I have been to 3. Our 1st meeting was together in 1992.

I will post some intermodal container and chassis weathering pictures later today in my Continuous Weather thread. I had a client/buddy drop a bunch off Saturday and I rushed 6 for him. He was having a photo shoot for his layout yesterday and today. The freelance photographer is in the area this week for 5 layouts. He usually gets his articles and pictures in Model Railroader magazine but says he is now offering them first to RMC

Have a great day

Good Morning All. Cloudy and 58°. Just stopped raining (& thundering) and I have 0.3" in the rain gauge. It's not done for today, as there appears to be approaching light to moderate rain coming in about 2 hours. Of course it may dissipate before it gets here. The forecast for yesterday originally showed a 40% chance of rain at 9:00 pm...that turned into a 100% chance at 10:30 am which lasted until 4:00 pm. That one left me 0.5" in the gauge and on top of the ground. Clearing tomorrow and sunshine for the foreseeable future. 70's through Sunday and Monday it's back into the 80's.

The unexpected timing of the rain yesterday left plans interrupted. I had just gassed up the tractor and got the battery off the charger for the electric push mower when I first started hearing the thunder. Came in and played computer games and filed model RR photos into appropriate folders instead. While on the subject of computers, I have been apprehensively looking forward to the date that I have to convert to Win11. I'm not good with computer changes although Win7 was easy. Someone convince me otherwise please.

Progress was made out in the train shed yesterday, although there was a small step backward. The backward was when I spilled a small amount of IPA/water on the parking lot. I wiped it up and I now have a 1/2" diameter spot to repaint!
I got the parking lot stripes painted, but I am thinking of doing some over. The white paint pen that I was using was malfunctioning and I got more of an aged and irregular look than I wanted. I might first try weathering. On the left end behind the appliance store, I used yellow stick-on stripes to suggest that they re-striped their end when the store was remodeled.

It will get some more vehicles and pedestrians when I am done.
I am reminded that I have a small mini-scene between the bookstore and the candy store that currently can't be seen.
1746540300730.jpeg

Example there as well of one of the stripes that needs fixing. Here is the scene as seen in light.

It represents some excess retail display clutter from the candy shop. It should eventually be visible once I install the lighting overhead. I have the fixture and wiring already, and it's on that lengthy project list.

Patrick - My wife insisted on a door for our walk-in shower which appears to be the same size as yours, with the toilet in the same position. I was/am concerned about access especially with our tiled-in seat in the corner. Strange how these things become important as we get wiser.
Peaches look good, it doesn't look like you need to thin any out.
Troy - Was that grocery run for the whisky made yesterday morning before you posted? Here you can't purchase distilled spirits until after 10:00 am.
John - Congratulations on finding the glitch. Even small steps forward are progress.

Willie Mays would have been 94 today. He passed away not quite a year ago. Still rocking, Bob Segar is 80 today.
Everyone have a wonderful Tuesday. I'll try to stay dry.

Gas Prices up in NJ from 2.95 to 3.09. Crude closed yesterday @ $56.83/bbl down 1.38...go figure. Official excuse is changing to the summer blend which contains more additives. Secondary reason, the start of the summer travel season... Oh yeah, Dow closed up, so did the S&P. Only mention on Disney 7 NYC was NASDAQ Down! (0.9%).
The Photo Below has multiple meanings. Think about it.

So the market was down today (-0.24% to -0.82% depending on index) and my two self directed accounts were down 0.01% (HSA self directed) to up 0.11% (401k self directed), beating the market. I don't beat every day but I appeared to today.
Yesterday I was down .2%, but it is just a very small loss for me. In the previous 10 days I went up 4% which I wish could be maintained all year long. Monetarily that two week gain was equivalent to 5.5 months of salary when I was working. But right now it is all on paper and could disappear in a short time like 2009!

I posted this video here some time ago. It's a video of the 2003 1948 model Pawling NY Railroad Ave. project of the day NY governor Thomes E Dewey whistled stopped in his hometown and mine Pawling NY. I recently posted the video on Facebook and it got a lot of play from people who never seen the video and live in Pawling now.

Going out to the club this morning with my friend who I have been mentoring in marksmanship. I'm going to challenge his focus and skills today by setting pistol targets at 25 yards instead of 7yds. I told him just to bring his .22 pistol. No need to frustrate (and cost) him with 9mm at that distance. My goal is to eventually get him to be able to hit a 6" target, at 50yds, with his .357 revolver.

I was at a Magpul pistol class more than a decade ago in Colorado. One of the “fun” things they did was set up a 12” steel target at 100 yards. I think it was 100”. It was at the very end at the berm, in the corner, and I’m pretty sure the range was a 100 yard range. Most of our work was at 3-7 yards standing out on the range, but for this exercise they had as back at the shooting stations.

Anyway, each person got one magazine and they had to hit the steel with the rounds in that magazine. The guy who did it in the least rounds got a prize.

I came in second or third at about 5-7 rounds. This was over a decade ago so I don’t remember all the details exactly. But if I remember correctly the winner hit it in 3 shots. I was shooting a gen 1 M&P 9mm. I forget what the winner was shooting.

The guys with big old 1911 I felt sympathy for. 45ACp is not that bad in a heavy steel 1911 but their magazines were my 6-7 rounds. lol.

It was a fun class.

I was in a Larry Vickers combined rifle and pistol class on Oregon back then as well. Like 15 or more years ago. He had a walk back exercise where he had a large gong hanging. This was with “modern sporting rifles”. I think we started around 50 yards. Each person got one shot. If you hit it you walked back to 60 yards and did it again. Sometimes he would throw in a curve ball like having to shoot off the off shoulder. We hit back to around 120 yards IIRC. I didn’t win.

Willie: The liquor laws here are 6 am on M-Sat. Only on Sunday do we have to wait until noon.

I used to think the old Blue Laws were the reason we couldn't buy bottled spirits or beer/wine on sunday. Instead it was the liquor store lobby. they didn't want to have to work on Sunday.

Looks different from the time I worked on the upper Harlem line, from 1983 til the end of 1990. The original station was long gone by then. No siding or industrial spurs, just straight rail through the entire area, with the PAWL block limit sign in there someplace (may have been close to MP 64).

We used to go out of Danbury on train WNDA-1, with cars for the Maxon mill and Tri-wall (old Borden's building) in Wassaic. The track ended just north of there back then.

Looks quite different today, even since my time, with the relatively new Wassaic Union Station...!

Good morning. Watch says it 46F. The outdoor sensor on the house sas 47F for one and 48F for the other. Not sure how far away the watch is getting it temp but I think it is the airport about 4 or 5 miles away and 100-200' lower in altitude... A few days ago it reached into the 80s during the day but the last few days have. been low to mid 40s over night and mid to upper 50s during the day.

It's raining. This very second it has stopped but the weather app shows high percentage for rain for another 2 hours then dropping off to 0-10% for the rest of the day. Every time I woke up this morning you could hear the rain on the roof. I kind of like the sound. Even though we have standing seam steel, the sound is dampened by the 16" joists full of insulation -- 4-6" high density closed cell spray in and the rest fiberglass batts. So it is basically the same sound our former house with its contractor grade shingles, attic, and insufficient insulation made.

The last few weeks I'be been trying to walk 5-6 times a week. My route is about 3.2 miles and takes me about an hour. I go down not quite 100' in altitude the first mile and make it back the last mile and a half (my route is not as direct). I usually go when I am up and ready, which lately has not been early (and I am trying to repent). With the rain today I will walk in the afternoon.

I started an online course called "iOS Lead Essentials". They had a free "crash course" last week that I was quite impressed with so I sprang for the whole thing. They had a first day discount so it ended up being around $1600, and they have a payment plan that lets you stretch it out 12 months. Since I am not working that's what I chose even if you pay a small service fee each month. Not working and having to pay the bank on the construction loan still (can't get a mortgage without a job) it's extremely tight. Luckily the per month charge is not that high and the course should really help me. A lot of it is stuff I "intellectually" know but have a hard time applying and they have a lot of practice exercises and direct feedback (you upload your solutions and they critique them to help you learn). It's the sort of thing I wish I had done 5-10 years ago and should help me long term in my career.

We leave in a little over 2 weeks for our trip to Japan. (I know a trip overseas is not what you normally do when unemployed. We had gotten the tickets with credit card points back in December before I lost my job, and had gotten most of the hotels for when we're not staying with the wife's sister with some other points that were expiring, and we have a cash stash there the wife got from an inheritance so the out of pocket cost is low. There is still some. We have 3 nights of hotel and a one day rental car when we're in the area my son is at and there will be other expenses, but it will be cheap compared to most vacations you take since it's already pre-pad, mostly with points, and we're staying with family). I don't know if I am ready to go mentally, because of the stresses now but it will be good to relax and be distracted for a little while. And get in a lot of walking some days.

I've not gotten much work done on my throttle app the last couple weeks. Have a side gig that needs attention and I was doing the week long free crash course last week (it's only up for a week). Lots to do. I need to get a lot more organized. Time and task wise.

If anyone has a time and track management app for macOS and companion iOS apps they like let me know.

Something where I can put in a list of projects and then tasks in each project and be motivated to work on them and track and manage it.\
For example:

Work on house -- 2 hours a day
-- do cabinet pulls
-- do coset door knobs
-- do shower shelves
-- paint the ceiling/wall interface in the main room

Do side gig -- 2 hours a day
-- do step A
-- do step B
-- do step C

Do course -- 4 hours a day 2 x 2hours
-- do lesson X
---- do step 1
---- do step 2
-- do lesson Y
---- do step 1
---- do step 2

Work on throttle app -- 1 hour a day

Work on job applications, interview prep, etc -- 2 hours a day

(Note those times are just made up as an example and I know that the total is more than you probably want to schedule in a day)

An app that helps me keep all tasks in the fore, track time, push me to duo them, help me stay organized.

Thanks

I used to think the old Blue Laws were the reason we couldn't buy bottled spirits or beer/wine on sunday. Instead it was the liquor store lobby. they didn't want to have to work on Sunday.
Interestingly when I lived in Mass they had blue laws and the "packs" (package or liquor stores) were closed Sunday. New Hampshire has state run liquor stores (only -- only beer and wine is allowed in grocery stores and outside the state monopoly). They were upon 2 days a week so Mass changed their laws to allow package stores to be open on Sunday within something like 10 miles of the border...

I think people still went to New Hampshire as there is no sales tax and prices were lower. So Mass wanted to get that tax revenue so they put unmarked state troopers in the parking lots of the New Hampshire state liquor stores along the border (there were a bunch strategically placed right at the border) and would take pics and estimate what people had bought based on the size of their parcels/sacks and get their vehicle license plate numbers and then mail them a sales tax bill. All well and good until a lawyer got a bill. He quickly filed a case in court and the state had to stop estimating sales tax and billing people...

I thought that looked like Chatham switcher territory. I guess I was right Dover Plains is on the way. Worked that job for 2 years from 1970 to 1972. I thought it was the best job I worked in my 13 railroad years. No rush to get anything done.
