Just a bit by the by - many many years ago Volvo began using a "selling point" that stated the Volvo was the "Safest Car in the World", that of course was rubbish but none the less that is the slogan they used to sell the thing. It therefore comes as no surprise that the number of incidents involving Volvo drivers increased dramatically - and that is a fact. Bottom line - a car is only as safe as the idiot behind the wheel ;) :)

accidents coming up onto a bridge over a river, sone idiots came up behind us hit us up onto the protection. barrier we were rocking and the drop to the Thames was scary, we got out car was totalled hit by a car not a lorry god knows what speed he was doing car had to be lifted off.

I once had too rear passengers who okayed me to reverse in the dark right into a massive tree, damage was under the bumper but my boss the car owner was not impressed

i was once travelling at 40-59 on a 60 road as I came around the bend a large tree had fallen from recent wind and my lane was blocked, a car was coming the other way, I could not stop in time there was no passing area for either of us, I put my foot down hard and we literally missed each other with inches, could see his horrified face as we passed not even mirrors touched - the no mobile phone in those days I’m guessing sone else hit it :(

I once came up to a roundabout slowly but did not slow hit a car on the roundabout - slow but I was a heavy vw Passat and damaged his door and the base of the car p a write off found later - a passing police car pulled over, observed sone idiot had dropped oil or similar on the road and said it was not my fault, but the insurance would cite me they did, asked if I had been out drinking and I was pretty shocked had broke a light it was late but I said been out for a meal with a mate so he said I could drive home as a rescue vehicle arrived promptly for the person I hit I hit the passenger side driver was fine, he followed me to the edge of his area and he gave his number if I was stopped again to check he had allowed me to drive - it was not until much later I even thought I drank 2 wine with my meal…..gulp. Got home safe and light repaired asap.

once on motorbike doing um a lot on motorway other half pulled up fast I literally rode up his back he pulled over to hard shoulder I got off bouncing and moaning WTF! Then he showed his front break lead which was dangling at one end he said if it had been trapped the bike would have immediately stopped spilling us into traffic, the back break was still good he secured the lead and we got home, the bike had been knocked over earlier by a stupid woman when parking, luckily a waiter had taken the number and gave to my husband, she lied and said not there initially but admitted taking husbands brand new Volvo later whilst wrangling we ran up a massive train bill to and from work in London 3k in train fees her insurance finally stumped up for the work, betting her husband was well peed especially as her lies cause most of the bill to be the train fees whilst we all argued.

Yes driving at 16 (or in some places at 15) is just dumb. Developmentally at 15-16 or so they are going through a deeper version of the 2-3 year old learning cycle -- their brains forget about consequences and they are re-learning that actions have consequences -- just at a deeper level than the stove is hot and can burn you. I was told this by a high school teacher at church who had learned it at a conference.

I delayed my son getting his license until he was 17 1/2 and I was 18 1/2 when I got mine. Lots of countries don't let you drive until you're 18. Even that is young developmentally but it is night and day from 15-16 age bracket. By 17 1/2 - 18 or so they've matured and are done re-learning consequences.
Back in the '60's when I got my license here in Texas, you could get a beginner's permit at 13, and a full license at 14. Which I did! It is now 15 & 16, but a 16 year old cannot drive with other teens in the car unless an adult is also present.

Unlikely to happen, but if it were, along with a whole lot of other rules/laws, then it would truly be United.
I was talking about what I heard was happening in Australia :) With that being said, I think Oz has always been pretty united - sure we have different States but generally speaking the rules and laws were always pretty consistent across them all.

As for the US, well - they can say they are the United States, but while there is still this Us and Them mentality between the North and South I doubt they will ever truly be united at anything very much. Might have been different had the South won the Civil War .... :) :) :)

I bet it isn't just vibrating, but nudging you back into your lane. Our Volvo had that and the VW also has it. If you stray out of your lane it should nudge you back in -- not auto driving but an assistance if you fall asleep or are distracted and leave your lane. The car will nudge you8 back in and the vibration also should wake you up or get your attention.
The steering wheel in mine vibrates. It is called "lane departure assist". In this area, it does this so much from all the "old lines" in the road from construction zones, I've been forced to turn it off.

Morning all,

Got called in to work yesterday. Fire station lost communication with the county 911 system. Took me some time to get it working properly. Getting ready to go help the boy in his yard again. Got a bobcat scoop of chat in the truck, and we need to get in on the other side of his garden area where it will be hard to get a mower into.

Then I have to get a Hosta planted for the wife. The boy bought her one for Mother's day.

I then planted a 2nd row of green beans along with a couple short rows of corn. Wife wanted it, so 2.4 8ft rows of corn. We'll see how it does. I really need more planning for next year.

Kansas is like Texas for Driver's licenses. They can get a learner's permit at 14, and it's restricted until they're 17. Grandson is 9 months away from being able to get his...

Good morning and Happy Mother’s Day to all you wonderful moms. JazA have a particularly great day on one of the few made for greeting card days there is that is worthy. Glad your here…

My learning Permit in Illinois was at 15 years 6 months. I was taught by my dad in a 1968 GTO, a Pontiac that had stupid horsepower that I came to love and respect.

That looks about right, dad’s was a gold tone, from online

The high school driver education class was taught by my freshmen Basketball coach who intensely disliked me because I did not my Sophomore year play basketball, I played hockey. That was not fun but probably very good for me to learn him. He did make me pay attention and I remember his start up rules 44 years later. My license was granted on the day I was eligible, my 16th birthday driving an Electrica 225 by Buick and it was the size of a small yatch.

Dad was a Buick/Pontiac/Opel/ Datsun dealer and he had different cars every month or so for years.

My first car was a Buick Opel Kadett made in Germany for the USA market.

this looks about right 1969 Opel Kadet B off the internet

It was my mom’s and was given to me as a sophomore in college as I needed a ride to work on weekends. I worked cleaning under the assembly lines at the AMC plant in Kenosha, Wi for 2 years as I blew my scholarship my freshman year. My first car purchased by me was a 1974 Malibu Classic with a gorgeous white leather interior, I purchased that 1 month before college graduation in April of 1974.

My car payment was $39 per month for 36 months. My first job out of college paid $150 per week for 90 days. After 90 days it was $450 a week for 13 months before my next raise. Boy times were different.

I never inherited the car gene from dad. My brother still has it going, our daughter has and my wife has acquired. I never have taken a picture of my own personal vehicle.

Trains, I organized my shop, again. The actual shop setup is fine but my client weathering projects were getting unorganized. I now have a dedicated space for items to be weathered, prep, in process and completed. I separated away my personal projects from clients, in the same manner and in much less space. I am finding the last year or so, those who are sending me items to be weathered are sending 5-10 items instead of the 1, 2 or 3 items with 3 being rare. I am still using the 4-6 weeks lead time and as per normal will not be accepting orders in June.

After visiting the new place on both Friday and yesterday and with the dry wall up in what maybe the train room I went back with my daughter last night and took measurements. I am going to figure out the shop space and start the design on the NEW layout. I am going to start over. After months of decision delaying, it’s done, start over. Even the 4 modules I have set up here will not be used. There is a slight possibility of using the space in the stables ( would need to be built) but I really want to have everything under one roof.

enjoy the day

For those that like sales, Athearn is at it again. The limited time Spring cleaning sale of a couple weeks ago was not obviously successful enough because by “POPULAR” demand it’s back. 40% off actually brings Athearn into the realm of good value. IMO

Good Morning All. Happy Mother's Day to all of your wives and mothers. Cloudy and 67° after a thunderstorm woke me up at 0300; one hazard of sleeping with open windows although I can usually hear thunder when they are closed. It just doesn't always keep me awake. Looking at the gauge a bit ago and there is 0.35" in it, so a bit over 3/4" in two days.

After the storm passed I went back to bed and I am now late with everything.

I picked English Peas from the garden yesterday, just a handful so far. I'm now concerned about those plants after the two 95°+ days last weekend, as they stopped flowering which will limit the harvest to the pods already on the plants. Still lots of pods, but no flowers!

Out in the train shed yesterday I just added a few trees and some more ground cover to the stretch of layout along the front of the tracks that I have been working on. Here are a few additional photos of the progress, probably the last.

That now leaves me with this 11" x 4" space left over to do something with. I'll be thinking about it for a while.

I did some other stuff that I don't remember and I ran a few trains in order to get that diesel lash-up into the picture.

Tom O - Good luck with the new house. Seems like it's needed. My driver's ed teacher's other job was quarterback for the New York Jets, Mike Taliaferro. He was their starter until Joe Namath came along.
Curt - I have gotten used to the power windows and door locks, as my Honda Civics have had them since 1989.
Chad - That "engine off" at stop lights may save gas, but how often does the starter need replacing?
Tony - I am also an advocate of cell phone blocking in moving vehicles. I drove over 1 million miles just commuting to and from work over 43 years. Add to that vacation trips etc and I might have 1.5M total by now. My wife hates that I can't hold a conversation with her while I am driving.

Everyone have a great Sunday.
