Plus if you can cover this, no postage, no risk or damage in post, no risk of rip off, however if your hands or eyes are no longer up to the job then yeah get someone to do it for you.
I goggle and didn't see how to do that exact engine so I'm going to NOT try. I'm 88 years, have never installed or removed and don't wish to do so now. Of course, I'll pay postage both ways plus the fee for work

And that’s a fair comment, I would not want to try either. Advice is only advice, given in good faith, but not meant that you should feel obliged to.

The suggestion was only if the circumstances fit, I am only just into my 60s, and I am a disaster with glue :) and I am dangerous with a soldering iron, the other half who is pretty nifty with one has tried to get me to do it, and realised that when I say I am not happy with a burning hot tool, he tried talking to me while I held it I turned to answer almost scaring him for life, he gave up before he was hospitalised.

So yes I offer the advice, but it does not mean I would follow it myself…winks.

NO I can garden paint the house, well I do go off and start painting um doodles lol, I can tile, although I like cheap tiles so there is no pressure, I am a good help mate when he does electricity, although he may have to describe a tool (no he does not show me a mirror!) and I can help with plumbing but can neither solder copper or tighten the plastic self seal kit. but give me a paint brush, or modelling project or a figure to draw and I can go to it. knitting bored the hell out of me, as do most pointless hobbies. Thus I come and annoy you guys :)

I have a Mantua 4-6-2 that does not have a dual mode dcc decoder. I would be glad to pay someone to remove that decoder and make it a straight dc engine. I'll even give them the decoder. I live in Columbus, GA
Lester - I would really like to help, but I don't know anything about installation or deinstallation of decoders, and my soldering skills are non-existent. I never took the step of going to DCC.

Fair enough, then I would suggest trying a local model shop if you have one, or a Railway club, they would be able to assist you in finding someone local to you to do the work.

Curt, you are a lucky man. I would have enjoyed meeting Garry.

He built a masterpiece of a layout. He was a modeler of the highest order. Yet he always had time for my novice questions and was always able to convey his answers in terms I could easily understand. I regret I have not done more with the knowledge he and others have shared.
Garry was a big factor in why i stayed on this forum, I truly miss him.

I could say the same for Jeffery, I miss him as well.

What a blessing it is to have known them and you. As well as many others on this forum.

That reminds me, I keep meaning to ask, how is Phil?

That’s how I got my AF 0-6-0 that my buddy from South Jersey from his Dad’s collection(before his sister sold off the rest of his rolling stock) up & running. Sadly, the gentleman who got it running is no longer with us. ☹️ I guess it qualifies as “borrowed motive power” in CN/WC/Soo Line trackage.

Eggs shop versus free range free range wins hands down, they get sun they give vit d, they get little critters to eat they give better meat, they get fresh greens, they give better meat, unfortunately avoiding the gum sweetcorn and organic costs loads so I g I’ve the cheap stuff. In captivity birds give 100 percent eggs first year 90 2nd year 80 3rd year, etc. Egg birds which are the type smallholders see are egg birds, meat is a bonus. Meat birds, poor souls only get months, 5 I think, they get so big and fat they literally break their legs. The reason you see the black marks on their legs is they just to walk to stand so sit in their own faeces.
So if you keep birds they get a better life. A cockerel, noisy creatures, especially if you get one that crows at night! Mean you get more babies.
Chickens will war anything, pretty much, do not go near them if your 🩸 bleeding blighters will go for the blood!
Winrer as long as dry and wind proof they should be ok. If you go away and leave food ensure it is tied to the sides and they cannot turn it over, food or water sand issue. Avoid water trays if chicks, as they are suicidal little buggers and easily drown.
They are fun, the eggs will be massively more healthy, some people bitch about food scraps, but birds love them and weeds if your weeding.
Do NOT let them wonder into your allotment especially if young seedlings they are more trouble than bleeding rabbits!
Nice cage if they can get to the ground they will tear it up, but also eat any critters.
Feed then apples, and apple cider vinegar in their water as treats this helps keep them healthy. They need soil for bird dust baths to keep down parasites.

Gotta love a chicken.
We have been trying different fruit and veggies to see what they like so far and putting 1/8 tbsp vinegar in their water, thanks for the tips Jazz!

Wellll, I screwed up good this time.
I have a Scale Trains Big Blow loco. The fuel tender has always seemed kinda light so I wanted to add some weight.
The model has no means of easily opening the body so I decided to drill a hole in the forward face down low in the gray paint then add 1 1/2 ounces of BBs. To secure them in place I figured I could just drip some AC glue in through the hole, shake it a bit then let it dry. Right away the AC glue started dripping out where the rear truck attaches to the body. No way to dry it. Just let it set. It's stuck in place now.

First of all I wish to say Thank You to everyone who gave me advice on my Mantua 4-6-2. You made the best decision with the information you had. I hope and pray that this will give you more information.
I am 88 years old, have lazy eye syndrome, I Goggled and found no information on how to remove that specific decoder. I have never installed or removed a decoder and before I do that I would I would set it on a track somewhere on my layout just to look at. I really like the way it looks is one of the reasons why I bought it in the first place. Of course if it could head up a consist I would have more happiness. Mantua engines with a die cast boilers and diesels with 8 wheel drive/pick up really pull good!!

Good evening Shop Dwellers!

. . .
That reminds me, I keep meaning to ask, how is Phil?

I got a temporary reprieve yesterday from the inflated egg prices. Was at the supermarket and grabbed a dozen-pack of "large" eggs, when a woman standing nearby said if I have 100 points on my "club" card, I could get an 18-pack of the same eggs for 99 cents (normal price was 4.39). I did have the points, so that's what I got! 👍

Louis - Sherrell spoke briefly on the phone with Phil last week. Said that he has pretty much lost all interest in the mrr hobby so he doesn't come around here anymore. :(

Willie - what kind of animal carcass is that vulture in your photo feeding on? Looks like some kind of dog...

* * *

Didn't get as much stuff done in the trainroom yesterday as I had planned, because of various diversions. But I did reinstall some 3rd-party software that I hadn't used during the past 7 years: Canon EOS Utility software to enable remote control of my DSLR camera via the laptop. I had stopped using it shortly after I started dabbling with it after I first bought my DSLR, because I couldn't find any practical surface to set the laptop on; obviously couldn't use the layout surface or the floor.

But then I had a lightbulb moment as I was putting some stuff away under the layout. I had this unassembled Black&Decker collapsible workbench still sitting in its box after 5 yrs of neglect. One of my kids had given it to me as a birthday present several years ago but I never really felt an urgent need to assemble it. Now however, I realized it would make a perfect surface for me to set the laptop computer on so I could use that to control my DSLR. So I went ahead and downloaded the latest version of the utility software from the Canon website and re-installed it (along with version 3 of Microsoft .NET software which the app requires in order to run).

After Mass this morning, and driving into Baltimore to drop my daughter off at the Greyhound station for her return trip to NYC (doesn't need her car in Manhattan), I proceeded to assemble the B&D "Workmate" portable workbench. One thing I quickly learned is that Walthers doesn't have a monopoly on lousy instructions; I wasted more than 30 minutes trying to figure out how to "Insert Part J into [the] forward bracket as shown." Well, part J wasn't even visible in the illustration that went with that assembly step, forcing me to use a trial-and-error approach to figure out exactly how that piece was supposed to be attached. Then on the following page of the instructions, ~4 steps later, there was a drawing of the mystery part inserted that showed how it was supposed to fit.

Anywho, I eventually got the thing assembled and was able to do a successful test setup of the laptop and camera.

This will make layout photography a heluva lot easier from now on.

Good Night - and have a Pleasant Tomorrow!
