I'm facing that now. My relatives on my Mom's side are all from, and still live in Tennessee. All except my Great Grandfather, who for some reason came to Illinois, but I don't know why. I'll never find that out now.

You never know what you might find out. All of my mother's immediate family had passed when the bug bit me to do family research. My dad and one sister were all that remained of his side of the family. Together, dad and his sister recalled a few names. My mom wrote a cousin in Scotland and got a few names for her side. Those few names have blossomed into 780 names today. I started with just wanting names. As more and more pieces fell in place, I wound up with dates, census reports, military records photos, digital pics of birth, marriage and death certificates. Once you start chasing down info, you wind up with new paths and trails to follow. Might very well be someone knows why Illinois.

Have you looked at tapping into FamilySearch.org or one of the other online places. Especially the ones that have access to the LDS geneological databases? (No need to be LDS). They are often replete with info and links to records etc.

With all the forum issues due to what we think are AI bots, etc. it got me thinking that this is another example of AI Companies pushing their costs onto others.

These AI bots aren't eyeballs for ads so they are not helping the forums and sites pay their hosting costs, yet their activity is making the forum (and I assume this is not only here) unable to do a good job at serving it's audience. They're killing forums and stuff and pushing costs onto them.

What I'd do is make sure the robots.txt and every other standard file that is supposed to tell "robots" what to do with the site is in order. Then on the main page I'd put a notice that automatic AI bots are not allowed on the site. I'd also say that after a certain date xx/yy/zzzz (and I'd put it in US and international order or spell it out) each page accessed by an AI bot will result in a charge of US $ 1 . Per page. I'd then send certified letters by US Mail to every major AI company with that info so that they've been notified. Then weekly after that date I'd run some utilities that can trace page accesses back (by IP, reverse DNS, ARIN, etc) to their source and start sending invoices to the AI companies. And as long as the bills were worth less than my local small claims court limits, if they refuse to pay I'd file an action in small claims court. If they don't show up they'll get a judgement against them. And they won't show up. They'll either pay as a settlement or get the default judgment.

Now imagine all the hobbyist forums out there doing this...

My uncle went back to Japan a long time ago to search out our family history. He found a lot of relatives and made connections. Then he had a stroke. We only know of a few and my wife keeps in touch with them during new years.

My brother, who was bored, decided to do one of those DNA tests and thinks he found out something strange on my mother's side. He told me about it and I told him not to pursue since the other group is also in Hawaii. Well, he doesn't listen to me and does so. They don't want to get involved either. He kept going at it anyway, so I advised him to talk to my mother's older brother, who is at least 8 years older as he probably would know. Preface the question with this remains between us. I don't know if he did or not and hope that he just drops it.

We don't know if the other side are a bunch of freeloaders, psychos, or whatever and I don't want them to try to get something from us.

I know of them.

I had good news about my mother when she was a young teenager.
Now I have seven challenging days of remembrance.

Tomorrow, the 10th March my older twin sister was two hours old when she passed to the other side and returned 'home'.
On the 13th my mother joined her.
On the 17th my father made the journey 'home' also.

We shall take in a little sightseeing around Allentown before the journey to Albany.
More family to visit.

Oooops, I did it again.

I let common sense slip away, and I overbid on a brass engine. NJ Custom Brass Western Maryland H8 Consolidation Rebuilt. Ok, I overbid my limit on the engine, but I didn't bid as high as the were on Worthpoint, and I have seen them higher on fleabay. Just a little higher than I projected. So I got it home today, and it ran great. At least the motor did. The coupling between the motor and the gearbox was a mass of melted goo. So tonight was filled with de-gooing that area, (with strong solvents) removing the motor from the torque arm, and creating a new driveshaft from silicone fuel line. Tomorrow night will be spent disassembling the gearbox, cleaning out the semi hard grease and lubing up the axles and running gear. I did reassemble the motor, and did a brief test. She does run, but VERY slow. Mainly because of the dried up chassis and gearbox. Once I clear that up, she should run just fine. Then it will be off to the paint shop, with 6 of her siblings. We will no longer have locos running around here "nekkid"!

Some of you will think I've lost my mind, some of you know I have. I just love the detail, the fidelity and accuracy of brass. I blame it on my 40 year friendship with Howard Zane. You can't get this feeling from a Bachmann 2-8-0, even though I have 4 of them too. They are nice locos, along with the 2-10-0s from Bachmann. Both come right out of the box ready. Brass, not so much. I realise that these locos, many of which are 25+ years old may need some tinkering, but that gives me a huge satisfaction when I see them run.

I will only have tomorrow night to tinker after work. Wednesday evening will be spent packing so we can leave late Thursday or early Friday for an extended weekend in Clayton NC with the little people (grandkids).

BTW, anyone know of a good train store south of Raleigh? Jerome maybe??

It is nice to apply a skill you learned while modeling to other applications in real life.
I have glued together countless models and learned to make things stick together.
Sometime back, The rearview mirror on my 1989 Chevy pickup separated from the windshield. Now, many months later, I finally got some thicker ACC to glue the metal disk back to the windshield. I held the disk in place by hand for 5 minutes until the glue hardened enough to keep the disk in place. I hen, I let the disk cure for 24 hours before I installed the mirror.
It sure is nice to see what is right behind my tailgate now.

He told me that he guarantees the boards that he produces with the caps already installed, so I told him that he doesn't offer this color and brightness with the caps installed and would prefer if he did. He told me that there is a new one coming out soon. That'll hopefully make this issue a thing of the past. THis is the 2nd one to blow.

I guess since the guy will be selling them with the caps already installed, that'll be one. The second was that the board is still good. The third is that he'll be sending me extra caps with my next order.

You really should be using min 25V if not 32V capacitors. They recommend 2x the expected voltage for the rating of the cap unless you have a zener diode or other voltage limiting device in the circuit. Even the you you should still be a little high... Remember a 10% 16V capacitor could have an actual rating as low as 14.4V. If you're running a 15V H0 system you're over already.

The only 2 shops I know left around are Nick's Trains in Raleigh (just expanded his store) and Hayes Hobbies in Fayetteville. Hope that helps a bit.
