Good evening. It's 69 and clear.
My errant laptop sleeve is still in Austin, TX. It hasn't moved in many days, and it was originally supposed to have been delivered today. That has been updated to tomorrow. I really doubt it's going to go from Austin, TX to central Florida overnight, but I guess it could happen.
My E-bay package was was in transit from FT Worth Tx to my home (only 160 miles) for 11 days. One of my packages has been in route from Dallas to Ft worth Tx for 5 days. Its a crap shoot every time.

Good Morning All. Beware the Ides of March today. Partly cloudy and 55°, only heading up to 65° after that string of 80°+ days. A couple of cooler days and back to the 80's on Monday. Up & down from there with some cool days and some warm days. There is still a hint of the dust from yesterday, but I can't tell because it's still dark.

Maybe the high winds here and across the rest of the country are the result of the earth spinning faster to catch up to Daylight Savings Time???

Regarding that deer leg that I posted about yesterday, the reason that it was broken from the previous bone was because I believe it got run over by a plow out in my hay field recently. I observed one of the granddogs out there digging earlier in the week.
Yesterday, I did a little more mowing and hand-watered parts of the garden before the wind picked up around noon. Wind was about 2 hours ahead of the dust storm, which lasted about 3 more hours. Today I will retrieve any items blown asunder, and pick up the metal lawn chairs. Got to bring in a supply of firewood since it is forecast to get to 40° tonight and tomorrow.

Yes, I did brave the dust storm to go out to the train shed yesterday. I picked out figures and added them to the sidewalk surrounding John's Place.

This is what it will look like next to the neighboring structure on the layout in a not yet completed area.

Oh yes! The mortar on the other three sides came out a little better than the first.

Troy - I can't read the Wapo story regarding Steak N Shake due to their firewall. I ain't giving them my E-mail address either, so I'm not sure how using beef tallow makes them political??? The Italian sausage is probably a healthier choice anyway, but I doubt that the Kraft Mac & Cheese is healthier than the fries.
Tom O - Nothing wrong with being a non-beer drinker. Y'all save a lot more money than I do!;) Although the price of soft drinks in the grocery store are approaching the cost of beer unless you find them on sale. Most but not all eating establishments that I frequent that serve draft beer still charge $4-$5 for a 20-22 oz mug.
Louis - I agree that businesses should stay out of politics, but I have never boycotted because of it. Except Bud Light, which I never bought anyway. Does that count as a boycott???
Terry - It's been my observation (from personal experience and reading), that prices have gone up in all dining establishments across America.
Hughie - Those all look like excellent additions to your layout.
Mike - The food to go industry down here is thriving but still not as great as dine-in. It was helped by a new Texas law in 2021 that allowed eating establishments to offer to-go alcohol with meals.
Patrick - Its only fair that we send our dirt to you, since you send your cold fronts to us!

Besides being the Ides of March, today is also International Eat an Animal for PETA Day (or EATAPETA). I guess that is where eating and politics cross.
Everyone have a great Saturday and enjoy the weekend.
I guess as I get more into adding structures to my layout, that I will have to have a "Willies Place" on my layout. 😄😄

John

Afternoon all,

Woke up at 3:30a then fell back to sleep until 4:30a and was awake until 6:00a and turned on the morning news, at which point I fell back to sleep until 8:00a. Missed the news and weather. Got up at 8:00, made breakfast and then went out to fix the fence again. New spots. Braced 1 post that broke, fixed a stringer that the nails let go and then reattached 6 pickets in various locations. Came in, fixed lunch and now sitting at the tire place waiting on a rotation.

Restaurants are and have been getting more. A town about 65 miles away lost a nursing home yesterday due to a grass fire. All residents were safely evacuated and no one hurt.

Well, howdy there internet peeps and those with loco motion

It's troy again

That red dust didn't make it up to Indiana, but the weather was funky. A few tornado warnings south of us. We just got rain, then wind. then rain.

Wife put me in charge of the pizza making once the dough and sauce were made.

Here's the start:
Pizza 1.jpg

Last time I baked one, it was 24 min at 400 F-degrees. left it in for a minute past that to darken it up a bit.

This time I set the timer for 25 min at 395 F degrees.... looks like that barometric pressure with the storms made it go from not quite done to extra crispy in that additional minute.

Still tasty. But a bit on the crunchier side for the toppings. Crust was fine.

I haven't been in a restaurant or fast food joint, but once, since I went on heart diet. Don't miss it either. Price increases, are finally causing people to pull back...It's been a long time coming.

I rearranged some structures along"West Front Street", to see how they might fit. I have several kits to place where these were.

Good morning from Wisconsin. As they say stick around here 10 minutes and the weather will change. It’s back to seasonal temperatures at 25f degrees feeling like 16 and only going up to 39. So different than the past week. 70’s are being guessed at for Tuesday!

Our wind event from 11:15pm Friday till 3am Saturday morning took down 2 under construction townhouses about 1/2 mile west of us. The 2 x 4s, 6s and 8s in our side yard must have come from there. We have, my words, “minor” damage to some of our west facing wall. Terry declares it must be replaced!

College hockey in person for us is over. Yesterday the #1 Badger Women’s hockey team beat a stubborn Clarkson team 4-1 on the University of Wisconsin campus. They advance to the Frozen 4 finals in Minneapolis next weekend. We would normally go but the Monday after is the 24th and Terry’s final cataract surgery. We will watch on the big screen in the cave!

I never made it to the train room yesterday but after the Sunday grocery shopping this morning I will. After a couple of months working on plans then drawings for paper mill structures for a friend’s layout he approved them last night. I had a difficult time finding pictures from the 1960’s of paper mills around Puget Sound. I think I have a good idea but it was tough drawing them out. Over the balance of the year I will occasionally post a structure as it gets built. Lots of brick! There will be 24’ of background structures built from styrene. From there I will build out foreground structures. My daughter will 3d print many items for this but mainly the conveyors that my friend’s youngest son will do the drawings for. We originally had plans for a local to doing the switching in the mill but…

One of our mutual friends was a trainmaster then director on the WSOR RR and said a mill like this would have its own switcher. That changed some things up. Here’s the footprint of the framework, (yellow lines are for the paper mill frame work) already installed. The track showing (red and black) is no longer correct.

Most of the structures will have a brick facade but grungier than what these pictures show. This is the coal fired power plant that will be wrapped around that gray pillar towards the right side of the drawing. I have lots of .040 and .060 thick styrene in 2’x 4’ sheets to work with. The daughter this month will try to 3d print some .020 styrene with bricks to laminate to the base of either the .040 or .060. If she can print the brick sheets that will save lots of $$$

The photos are just for reference and inspiration and will not be replicated. Needed to understand the way the structures looked

Enjoy your day

Well howdy there internet peeps and those that don't go BOOM!

It's Troy again.

Wife says we're going out to lunch somewhere but not sure where. After that she's off to see her mother, and I get to try to clean up the last bit of work on the little soldiers on my painting table.

Did the taxes for the author biz yesterday. I treat it as a retirement biz, to pay for my hobbies since I'm fairly unemployable due to my age and degree level. (Journalism as a profession is dead, as are the teaching opportunities).

But, I was pleased that after I paid for my conference in Vegas I made a little (low 4 figures) profit. I was expecting a loss. I could whittle the number down another $500 or so with meals while in vegas, and chasing down a few more receipts I'm sure I spent but can't find. But, I need to keep the status the business in the profitable range. I've already used up my years of loss.

The biggest issue this year was trying to get advertising on Facebook and Amazon to more than break even. I had a senior moment and forgot I had adds on Amazon going on a FREE ebook of #1 in the series. So Amazon spent and spent and spent my money promoting it. Free books are a good gateway into my books, but I only see about 10% of downloads purchasing the next book. So a $400+ advertising bill for the month when I made $300 more than I normally do wasn't a win. I've since turned off all adds on my free books, and only advertise book #2 in each series. Now my Amazon ads are running me $20 a month instead of $400. That will help.

Time to head to the hardware, then to the game store. Then back home for lunch with the wife. BBL
