Morning - Watching the local (LA) news of the "digging out" of the snow at Crestline! They really got buried and the local grocery roof collapse, and the roads in an out of the town are closed, and, and, and.... Area has not seen that much snow from the early 80's!

We are 36 degrees heading towards 61 with clear sunny skies.

FRANCINE, Scrambled with sausage, biscuits, and gravy. Couple slices of whole wheat buttered, please! Oh how about a DP, diet, to drink?
Wife and I seriously considered Crestline when she was working in LA. But then her boss changed to a different PhD... and we decided it was time for her to get out of management. The official (and realistic) excuse was that we needed to move back to Indiana to be near the mothers.

Good Afternoon, folks!

I've not been in for a-bit, preferring to be a lurker while I'm not working the train hobby business.

You might remember, my wife asked me to find a contractor to completely redo our main bathroom in the house. Long story short, I couldn't get a call-back from all the contractors I tried, so I got angry enough that I decided to do it myself. Since then, I've researched and studied, and became an overnight amateur in trades other than what I'm trained to do.
I am a tradesman anyway (journeyman electrician), so I know quite a-bit about the construction industry anyway.

I've been working away at it. Not really in any hurry, as we have two other washrooms in the house. I'm just trying to do things right.
Here's a few photos where I'm at.
I got the new plumbing done, and threw in a new bathtub. There was a jacuzzi there before, but, I don't like them.
I've been trying to salvage the vanity. Now I'm thinking I'll get rid of it and build a new one.

Where I'm at now, is tar papering the wall in the bathtub/shower pan. Tomorrow, I'll put up the Glasroc backer-board. Then, I'll membrane it with thinset:

New 12x24 porcelain tiles should be in this week sometime.

I know there's been a couple of fellas posting their own bathroom reno's recently, and I have been noticing as a lurker. Well done, indeed!

Anyway, this years modelling season is a no-go. Hope to get back into it when I'm done with the wife's honey-do's. She wants the house exterior painted too, so I don't know when I'll get back to the trains. As it is, the layout hasn't moved an inch in 2 months.

Just thought I'd drop in and say hello, before yu'all forget I was ever here.

Have a great day.

Afternoon all,

Finally slowing down as I had to stop and get ready for church. Among the stuff I accomplished was getting railroad cross ties to make a raised bed garden for the boy. I had forgotten how heavy those are. One was a little shorter than the rest. Guess which one was the heaviest? 😂

Then raked and shredded the leaves in his yard and they're in the new raised bed. Sadly, my leaf blower bit the dust. Trying to restart and it went bang. Won't turn, so I guess that being 20 years old may have played a part in it's demise.

Oh well, tomorrow I have to go get a truckload of topsoil. Then we'll spread it and hit it with a rental tiller as mine just isn't big enough to handle the new soil and break-in of the existing ground. Hopefully the ibuprofen kicks in as I overdid it a bit.

Guy: Welcome back. Interesting project. My current projects seem to be everyone else's. After I get done with the boy's garden spot, I have 2 small decks to build for his neighbor (my daughter). Post as you can.

Good afternoon from a wet drizzly So. Central Wi.

The grandson’s team got crushed this morning 5-1 and only had 5 shots on goal the whole game. They did play short handed as both the grandson’s wingers were in a small fender bender and didn’t get to the game at all. He had 2 of the 5 shots his team had and an assist on the lone goal.

Game #2 was a different story. It was 5-0 after 1 period with the grandsons 2 wingers getting the 5 goals. The other team had no shots on goal in period #1. No scoring in period #2 but 3 minutes into the 3rd period his line added 4 more goals. No stop time the rest of the game and the coach moved the players all around after that. Fun game

Dinner at the daughters at 7. The son and his girlfriend are hitting balls on the simulator. The girl can really swing a club. That’s it from here…

No snow here. ;) Current temperature is 44°, it's still mostly cloudy, with WNW winds at 5 to 15 KPH. They are calling for a low of 32°. Overnight rain total was 1.31".

I just watched a U Tube video rating the 10 worst NHL arenas...subjective and somewhat obvious, for example the worst was Arizona State University, temporary home of the Arizona Coyotes., Runner up was the Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary AL, which has been in use since 1983. The flaw was that the Worlds most Over rated Arena, the Garden in NYC was not included. It dates back to the mid 1960s.

Looks like I'm going to need a printer soon. My current machine, a relatively new Epson 7100. The print head is starting to fail. :(

RDG 470 + 2 coaches @ Newtown Jct October 1961 Gerry Meyle Sr.jpg

From Gerry Meyle's slide collection, Dual control equipped passenger RS-3 is passing Newtown Jct, with two commuter coaches in October 1961. Most likely, a Fox Chase to Reading Terminal local,. this was before the introduction of RDCs in 1963, and electrification in the SEPTA era. A doable modeling project, every core component is available...the RS3, (Atlas or Bowser) and the BCW coach kits.

Boris, I've got an Epson XP434, and I've found print heads clogging and refusing to self clean. When that happens I fill a syringe with 92% alcohol, pull out all the cartridges' and with a small rubber hose, flush all the print heads with alcohol. Then a little circuit board cleaner and viola, I'm back in business. I think my biggest problem is that I really don't use my printer much, maybe once a month. It only really gets heavy use printing Christmas card lists.

Been up since 2 am... it's now 5:32 am

having a problem getting sleep with the back pain. It's slowly easing. Enough that I can test its muscle and not nerve. Left of spine. No pain radiating down the leg.

today is alternating ice and heat

Got one more day of the online conference.

Told the wife, we'll go out for one meal. Not sure if its for Mexican or Pizza Hut. Either way, I'm breaking my low carb goal for the day.

back to the words...

Edit the above:

Even though I keep hearing that you are unlikely to get a herniated disk in your late 50s (currently 58) I'm starting to wonder.

Laying on my belly is the best position for comfort. unfortunately, I don't type well in that position.

Ah, well... the joys of getting old...

Boris: You might think about ditching InkJet's and go with a color laser. Costs a little more upfront, but over the years you will see a great cost reduction just in toner vs Ink. Yes, I said 'over the years'. Laser prints do NOT run as the colors are fused into/onto the paper. Ink with Inkjets on the other hand will run if there happens to be some moisture on them and you can see a difference in resolution. I am an HP fan as I have been working on them since that 1st 'LaserJet' that was the size of a small air-conditioner. When something goes sideways ( It will no matter what printer you have) figuring out what needs fixed is pretty simple. Then you get whatever part, find a YouTube vid and fix the thing. Wife bought an HP Color ( MFP M281fdw ) for somewhere around $300; scanner, copier, printer. It connects wifi, ethernet or USB. I personally do not like the 'all in one' types, but it works for her. Besides the normal 'Office stuff', she has been printing family stuff on photo paper. The result is pretty darn close to chemical processed prints.

Good suggestion, Karl, but my other half vetoed the idea. We use ours more than we realize. Lately, I have been scanning a lot, and I like the way this one handles it, so I'm reluctant to change. Won't hurt to try it. Worst I can do is wreck it, eh?

You are right to wonder grasshopper. I suppose the premise is that by your late 50s you are less likely to do things that cause herniated disks. But.....wait, there is something called "Degenerative Disk Disease". It's caused by Osteoarthritis of the spine...I have both the Cervical and the Lumbar versions, and when it flares...wow! it hurts! This devil affects multiple disks, not just one, which compounds the problem.

I should have ditched ink jets years ago, but didn't. Now, there is really no advantage to doing so. The cost of operation isn't that bad, as most of what we print is greyscale or B&W...recipes or financial statements that get shredded when they clear. Both Epson and HP have great photoprinting capabilities, so I think another inexpensive ink jet is in our future.

41° and raining. High wind and coastal floodig warnings are up through 0400 tomorrow.

I appreciate all the kind words concerning my recovery from heart surgery. Thank You all. Next week, I will set up Cardiac Rehab, to improve my strength. Also adding protein to my diet.

We walked at the Reservoir this morning, before we went food shopping. We took a different trail and added about an additional 0.3 miles walked to our previous walks at the Reservoir. My speed is also better, not spectacular, but faster.

This evening we tried a new recipe for Roasted Flounder with Lemony Almondine, with baked potato and cole slaw. Delicious....better than expected. Recipe was found in the NY Times, of all places.

Sherrel: This weather y'all are encountering, will soon pass, and you will be back to hot dry conditions...

Browns Yard Crew, (Conrail), SA=02 running West on the former Raritan River Rail Road, in Milltown, NJ on 03_03_2023. Note the still standing RRRR freight house to the right of the train. Mason Adamic Photo

I like that Lake George car very nice....that name is from Lake George New York where I fish. 15 minutes from me.

Good Morning All. Clear and 50° in my world here. 78° predicted for a high today, 82° tomorrow. The high will remain above 75° until Friday. The rain forecast has been moved back to Wednesday. Not a lot of difference as it still won't be dry here by then.

I did nearly nothing yesterday after the busy week. I did drive down to the mailbox over a mile away and picked up the mail. I noted on the way that the city-slicker neighbor has got another Longhorn in the yard, but it was too far away for me to tell much else. He also had a bulldozer operator there to repair the partially washed out part of his driveway to the house. Eventually this spring, he will have to put a second culvert pipe there which he should have known from the beginning. He has been fighting against Mother Nature with his property improvements and has been losing.
Nothing much planned for today beyond church this morning. If it dries in the right place, I'll stack that firewood that I cut last week. Grilling for supper, most likely a steak since I did sausages last night.

Thanks for the reactions regarding the figure make-over posted yesterday. Here is a side by side comparison of the two figures.

Otherwise out in the train shed yesterday, I concentrated on two things, cleaning the place up a bit as I had tracked yard debris stuck to my shoes to the inside; and returned to work on the Ethanol refinery project. I drew lines on the plywood to outline where I was going to paint a concrete base color, and I started painting some of it. No pictures yet as it is still somewhat disjointed.
I showed cats on the layout the other day, so it's only fair that dogs get their chance today. First up is this guy on the porch of the feed store.

Swal - Plumbing issues seem to never end, at least for me.
Guy - Good to see your post. I thought that I detected you lurking a while back. Glad that everything is still good, even if you are working hard. When you previously posted about redoing the bathroom, I didn't realize that you were going to gut the whole thing and start from bare walls.

Everybody have a great day today and every day.
