Today is typhoon prep day. Will be tying the lids of my two weber kettles to the kettles and then to the fence. Since my snap pea plant is done, I can take the fencing for it down since that'll cause the planter to fall. all of the shading that I put up for my baby plants have to come down as well. Anything that can become a missile hazard will be stowed or get a brick or a weight placed on it.

The track seems to have moved to the southwest a bit. Hope it continues to move that way. I think it'll be a daytime hit tomorrow, so that'll be good.

The PWM is not adjustable, or at least easily. It's 20K, which should be fine for almost anything. Since I can run all of my other stuff on it, especially all of my coreless transplants, I think this loco's electronics board or the blanking plate has something to do with it. I'm thinking of pulling all of that stuff out and installing a N18 board.

I saw a review on this loco and she had a very hard time installing the E24 board, which the loco was made for of all things.

As for the Kato controller, I took a pic of the waveform at 3vdc, measured by a VOM at the track. My scope reads around 60Khz.

I should break out the scope and measure my home made one to verify.
Does it have the same problems with the KATO controller?

if you put a decoder in, see what CVs you can use to adjust the frequency. I know my D&H decoders have a CV that they recommend setting to a different value for coreless motors.

Ok yall are typeing to darn much for my mind to comprehend!! Lol its funny how the old folks dont wanna type TIL THE GOT SOMETHING TO SAY lmao
I'm wondering if you've ever had ceiling gophers. You're a model railroader, and have (one assumes ceilings)

Other than flooding your building, have you been able to get rid of the ceiling gophers?

Because, on the AI data centers, one must be careful not to allow ceiling gophers, or the data chips are toast. I've seen a report that only H20, from melted then distilled Antartic sea ice is capable of driving away ceiling gophers in large industrial buildings like Data Centers.

On the drive home my wife saw a news story that Anthropic, parent of CLAUDE AI has filed to go public. With luck, their data centers all use antarctic distilled glacier water for cooling the AI brains.

Welp. Back from getting breakfast at the AI saloon! 🤣

Wife and I had the scrambled snowmen and half-baked rice from the AI menu. :p

but the AI cheesy bread was awesome. As was our main course.

There is a nice older woman (early 80s) in our condo community who has written a few books based on her religious perspective. She found out I'm an author as well, so we're always chatting books.

The only problem is we're from very opposite ends of the spectrum. I write magical cozy mysteries with magical creatures. and some characters that some on the religious-political spectrum might not want to read about.

Well, the nice lady's husband is a retired Calvinist minister.

But she said she should probably read one of my books. I knew she was being polite, so I offered to give her one. "well you don't have to, but I really should read one"

challenge accepted. I dropped a book into her mail slot on my walk on Saturday. She'd wanted a card so she could find it online.

Well, I found her today on my morning walk, and asked if she'd found the book?

Yes, and she was about five chapters in, and had peeked ahead to see who the next victim was... She knew, so she really had been reading.

And on my walk this evening, as I rounded the corner by her condo, she called my name. She had a copy of one of her books. Christian Mystery. ( I mention the religious side because that's how she described it.)

I'm not religious, but I shall read the book. I cracked it open already, and my hunch is that it could use a good developmental edit to tighten up plot and characters. We'll see if that hunch is true.

Well, we're back from Branson. What a great trip. Got to spoil great-kids and just had a really good time. I will occasionally put a lowball bid in on fleabay and was totally surprised when I won a Kato 4-8-4 UP 844. Wow, this was unexpected to say the least. Now I have to put together a consist for it.

Well, I want to nap, but the Bambu decided to get a nozzle clog about 45 minutes into the last print of the first floor on the Midnight Abbey mansion 3D print.

I believe I've fixed it and turned down the speed of the printer, but we'll see. If I have to, I can switch back to the .4 nozzle and drop the layer height. but I'd prefer the finer detail of the .2 nozzle.

Oh, and I appear to have picked up a large colony of Ceiling Gophers. Pesky critters. Moving into buildings and cutting 4 inch holes in the ceiling. They probably feed on model railroad rails and turnouts, or on the chips and wiring in the AI Data Centers. Shotgun may be the only way to get rid of them. Or flooding the zone with copious quantities of water. Hope no AIs read this post. I'd sure hate for them to know how to protect their data centers from Ceiling Gophers.

Troy, we had a bout with them ceiling gophers here in the basement. They left like 32 holes in the ceiling before we exterminated them. Had to fill all the holes with LED puck lights!! Used oversized mouse traps baited with PBJ sammiches and beer. They're suckers for PBJ and beer.

Ok yall are typeing to darn much for my mind to comprehend!! Lol its funny how the old folks dont wanna type TIL THE GOT SOMETHING TO SAY lmao

Who are you callin old, punk! ;) :D

G'nite all!

Just two more for tonight, and maybe another (and a companion pic) tomorrow:

The cover model on the left used an interesting technique (built by MM editor and founder Bob Hundman): The goldenrod colored siding panels were all carefully cut, painted, and then laid into the wall, literally as an insert. Windows and trim were a dark green, brown shingled roof. It was an attractive structure.
Other one was fun too, but I can't remember the source.

Wow, that's awesome! Very good luck, indeed! But I'm confused as to how you can understand each other, speaking different coding languages? haha

I've met exactly two people in nearly 40 years that had the same AFSC as me. There's just not many of us around. At least in this part of the country. I don't know where they all are, but there was a lot more than a few that did my job.

User beware........Got this notice today. This info from Malwarebytes
There was a ton more info in the article but it was way too much to post here.

AI, Scams, Threat Intel

Fake ChatGPT download site infects Windows and Mac users with malware

A convincing fake website is impersonating OpenAI’s ChatGPT download page and infecting visitors with malware designed to steal passwords, browser data, cryptocurrency wallets, and other sensitive information.
The site, openew[.]app, closely mimics OpenAI’s real ChatGPT download experience and offers what appear to be official desktop apps for both Windows and macOS. Instead, Windows users receive a credential-stealing malware loader, while Mac users get Odyssey Stealer, a fork of Atomic Stealer (AMOS), a well-known macOS malware family associated with cryptocurrency theft.

On another note, I bought gas in Vernon Texas last Friday at the WalMart (Murphy) for $3.72. It is $3.89 a gal 18 miles either way from me.

I had a great three day visit with my son.

Take care....John

No DCC yet, only running on DC. The humm is worse with the Kato.
Do you have access to the Tomix PWM based controller? It would be interesting to see how it performs there. Though I just did a Google which says that Tomix is 21khz and KATO 20khz so not sure if that is a big enough differences or if there is some sympathetic frequency in the motor that makes one of those two more susceptible.

Good luck

had the same AFSC

Navy was NEC (Navy enlisted classification). We all had rates, such as Data Systems Technician (DS), Fire Controlmen (FC), Sonar Technician (ST). Each rate had a set of NECs that further defined your job. 2 of the 3 buddies that I had lunch with on Friday were original DS'. The rate was disestablished in 1994-ish so myself and one other became FC. The 3rd guy was an ST. So we had a DSCS (E8), FCCS, FCCM (E9) and STCM.

At my last job, we had 4 ex-DS'. I was the last one to go. The DS' had a website for us to keep in touch, but they closed it up and went F@kbook, so that was the end of it for me.

Nope, no Tomix.

Broke out the scope and measured.
Home made shows 22Khz. Ugly a$$ waveform.

Kato SX shows 120Khz.

I asked Google and it said older DX packs are about 20hz. Then I asked about newer ones. This is the response (notice the source):

Newer KATO PWM-based controllers operate at a frequency of approximately 100 kHz. [1]
While older KATO units like the Hyper D and Hyper DX utilized a standard supersonic frequency of 20 kHz, KATO drastically altered the output signature for its modern flagship consumer packs. [1]

KATO Standard SX (22-018 Series)
  • The Frequency Jump: When KATO introduced the KATO Standard SX (including both the older blue 22-018 and the updated 2024 black 22-018BK-1 versions), they increased the PWM frequency to 5 times the older standard, pushing it into the 100 kHz range. [1, 2, 3, 4]
  • The Technical Reason: This ultra-high frequency completely shifts electrical harmonics far outside the range of both human and animal hearing. It provides smoother ultra-slow-speed crawling for modern coreless motors while minimizing heat buildup in the locomotives' small motor coils. [1, 2, 3, 4]

Performance Profile
Because the frequency is so high, the square-wave pulses occur every few microseconds. To the locomotive, this feels like an incredibly smooth, continuous flow of energy. [1]
  • Constant Lighting: The 100 kHz cycle provides enough continuous electrical "bites" to keep LED headlights and interior coach lighting blindingly bright even when the train is completely stationary.
  • Output Noise: On an oscilloscope, the Standard SX is known to have a "noisier" raw wave outputbecause it pairs this 100 kHz analog PWM pulse tracking with a non-stabilized, upgradeable external AC power brick. [1, 2]
(source for most is JNSForum or Reddit it appears)

Yep, Japan loves their PWM stuff for constant lighting. I like it too, just this one loco is driving this need. I may just gut all of the electronics out of it as I really believe that's the cause of the issues.

It has built in stay alive on the mobo and just the blanking chip has all that stuff on it.

Well, everything is stowed for sea. Took my flimsy solar panel off the car port, took down the floppy sun shade, all plants tied to a stake, peas ripped out and gone, webers tied to the fence, weights and extra bricks deployed. I just hope everybody else is doing the same.

I hear scaffolding work going on and it sounds like it is being disassembled. I surely hope so.

Oh yeah, rolled the car windows up. Have forgotten to do that on several occassions during rain storms.

Look forward to the neighborhood's leaves ending up in my carport tomorrow.
