Morning all, kettle is on here in the UK.

This was the view from my office at sunset yesterday evening:

(Yes, we still have a few semaphore signals left!)

...and this was the office:

Well, howdy there internet peeps, and those who haven't been electrocuted by sharks today.

It's Troy again.

For the heat dome: It's currently 75° F at 7:15 am... I may be walking on the machine to nowhere today. AFTER I get the ears lowered at the salon today. I prefer a cute stylist to a barber.

News media: The Dominion Voting Machine settlement with the Murdoch media empire should have opened some eyes. They had to settle for $787,000,000.00 ish paid to the voting machine manufacturer over claims about being "rigged" in 2020. The fact that Dominion could pierce (in the US Courts) the Fox always handy excuse of "We're just entertainment" for what was reported on their "news" channel is hugely important. The emails recovered as part of legal discovery, and then released in court filings showed plans to (at best) "mislead" all the way to the top of the media empire.

In the journalism world this was a HUGE course correction in the legal sense.

And, Murdoch isn't out of the frying pan yet. Smartmatic is currently litigating for what it says was outright lies against their company for the very same issues. Their suit is currently seeking over $1Billion in damages. They's said they won't settle for what Dominion did. One can be safe in assuming they have the same evidence that Dominion had.

So, I avoid all things "fox" or Murdoch owned. The big three networks are a decent place to start for media consumption. NPR, as well. Al Jazeera isn't bad, either.

Remember, all media has a bias. Walter Cronkite was an anomaly in the media world. And, when he finally broke with being unbiassed, and ran a special based on his visit to Vietnam, Nixon officially lost the war there the day that Cronkite called the war un-winnable. That ended any veneer of non-bias in the media world.

to be fair, you announce your bias, and when possible, present a full picture of the issues involved. The problems come in when people without subject matter expertise have to tackle what they don't know in a short span of time. Welcome to Journalism. People can usually make far more money in a field, than reporting on the field.

I'll put away my media soapbox for now.

Good morning from So Central Wisconsin where the radar shows it should be dry today. It’s 69f degrees now heading to the low 90’s. Storms coming out of Iowa track near us but look to miss us by 50-70 miles. Those storms out of Iowa converge with the ones out of So. Minnesota on HubCityMike’s area near Marshfield, Wi. My area seems to be protected from the rains as we’ve only had 1” roughly combined since the storms of last Wednesday night. The big stuff on Friday missed us to the south east and then they got another 2-3” on Saturday. Even 5 miles north of us were in the 2” range. Hot and steamy will be words for the day

I think I understand with what we will get with another term from either of the 2 presumptive candidates. I’m terrified that whoever their running mates are will have to finish out the terms of the office.

Looks like a decent day today and next few days for me in this heat. The only thing planned is I need to pickup the grandson for hockey practice Tuesday afternoon. The SIL is out of town this week and the daughter has a bunch of meetings. So I will chauffeur! His soccer team’s season is over and doesn’t start backup up until late August. So I won’t mind 90 minutes Tuesday in the 30f degrees hockey rink.

I see the heat index box has popped back up on the WeatherChannel app. Most of my time if there is a breeze will be split between the house front porch or the back deck and the train room. If there is no breeze I’ll be stir crazy by Friday.

Enjoy the day

Good Morning All!

41F @ 71% 41F? Geesh, it is the middle of June. Don't think it got above 61 yesterday. Guessers say 66F later.

Willie: That cardstock building that you are thinking of rebuilding ... Put some holes in it at interesting places, weather it in silver gray wood tone, then cover up the places that are really warped with some sort of creeper vine. Add feral cats too.

Terry: If your phone thinks it is in Montana - Welcome to Montana - Give me a yell and we can feed ya dinner.

I dropped the spare tire which looks to be a factory install. Still had air, but not at 35Psi: been there for 14 years so the rubber is also suspect. Oh, and no socket. Maria wants to go to Kalispell so will call the dealer there to see if one is available. If not, Maria may *think* she is going to Kalispell, but will probably figure it out when she gets to Spokane.

Have most of the the new RV spot leveled, just little things to do. Pulled a couple of Choke Cherries and replaced with a split up huge Lilac. Some of the splits went into buckets for Maria to decide where to put them. The big piece went out to the end of the driveway which gets morning and early afternoon sun so it should bloom more than it did where it was in the dimmer area. Boy, that tractor takes gardening to a whole nother level. After planting the Lilac at the end of the driveway I came back to the house mumbling something about needed a bucket of water. Maria went and got a 5Gal bucket and filled it for me. When she came around front with the bucket, I was filling the BUCKET with water. She looked, rolled her eyes then smiled. Only spilled a few drops running the tractor back out to that Lilac.

Couple of animal pix while sitting on the back porch last night enjoying a Molsen ( or two ).

Good morning all!

Going to be a warm one with temps in the mid 90s. Looks like the precipitation will stay well north of us today. Had a brief thunderstorm yesterday evening that dropped the temps from the 90s into the 70s, but that was short lived. Once the sun came back out the temps and the humidity just rose back again. Going to be a perfect pool day!

Not sure what else is on the agenda today. Maybe some mowing. Its not quite ready, but yesterdays rain, and the warm sunny conditions may wake it up.

Have a great day everyone!

Good morning. When I got out of bed it was 59F per the watch. Middle of the night I think it was as low as 56F. We had a cold spell come through over the weekend. A couple weeks ago we’d had a day or two in the 90s and then several days in the mid to upper 80s and then it got and stayed hot. About a week of low to mid 90s. Never getting lower than mid 60s at night. But then Saturday we were back to mid 80s and Saturday night / Sunday morning I saw a low of 53F and yesterday was a pleasant mid 70s for a high. Supposed to be back in the 80s by Thursday and 90s by Saturday but the next few days are 70s and 70s per the weather guessers. We’ll see.

Morning folks

All clouds, sprinkles, and 42F. The forecast high is only 46F with rain (well hopefully rain) for the rest of the day.

Email from brother yesterday and he wants to visit July 2 through 5, with his son, son's wife and five young (oldest is 10) kids. I'm uncertain how well that would have worked out even if my wife was functional and am really uncertain under the present circumstances. It obviously isn't going to be a catered service by me as most of the cuisine these days emanates from a can or a box from the freezer. On the plus side, hopefully they will go home with more "stuff".
It comes down to the same thing. Parts are poor quality for a reason, and that reason is profits. That price point you're writing about is just a fancy way to say it. According to "common expectations", one of my cars is obsolete. All that means is that someone decided to call it obsolete, and that's it, no more. I run it because it's cheaper to run it than newest cars. The reason it's cheaper to run it is because i can do most of the maintenance on it myself.
You wrote companies will not say it "we need to make sure it will last only 5 years"-that is obvious. No company or bussiness will quote it. If you do an actual budget comparing running old reliable vehicle to a new one, the older vehicle will come out on top, both in costs and economy. Of course the companies will try to sell new vehicles, it's bussiness. But what i mean an "actual budget": taking into account drilling and mining raw materials to have for an actuall build of a new car. Problem is most people are sheep and they do not think deeper where all the materials come from. Most think groceries come from the store, and cars come from dealerships.
As for parts, you are incorrect. Why? Because as someone who maintains vehicles, i know for a fact that older and most of the time, original parts on vehicles are simply better quality, no if, ands, or buts about it. I have run for well over 100K miles with original parts in older vehicles and when it came time to replace those parts, the replacements are almost universally of less quality.
Yep. I think vehicle longevity reached its peak in the late 90's when the electronics were still relatively simple and it has been downhill ever since. And, with the possible exception of some hybrids, the economy of newer vehicles hasn't really improved that much.

I'm another that does most of the maintenance on my vehicles (and all of the maintenance on the three Willys/Kaiser era Jeeps for which most of the presently available replacement parts are pure unadulterated chinese crap). I have a huge stash of NOS and used parts for those so it hasn't yet been a problem. And one of those Jeeps doesn't utilize any stock parts anyway.

Good Morning All. Partly cloudy and 76° here in North Central Texas. High today in the low 90's like yesterday, next few days will be breezy with 12-15 mph winds from the SE. While SE winds usually bring moisture, the NWS has removed the rain from this week's forecast. From my years of observations, I think that there's still a reasonable chance Wednesday night/Thursday morning. But they don't pay me for that.

I hope that all had a good Father's Day yesterday. I spent the day at daughter #1's in a Buffalo Wing eating competition. Not the all you can eat type, but who could eat the spiciest. We had four competitors and nine levels of spicy dipping sauce. Participants were me, my son-in-law, my 15 yo grandson, and the father of my granddaughter's best friend. Dipping sauces from mild to spiciest were these:
20240616_125955.jpg

The Truck Stop listed was a Tabasco Pepper blend, not sure what Hot on the Road contained.
All of us made it through all nine, although the Carolina Reaper nearly knocked two tasters out! Grandson and I ate the entire final wing.
For those unfamiliar with spiciness of peppers, here is the Scoville Scale.
1718625357634.png

Carolina Reaper is a recently developed variety, seemingly bred for events just like this. It actually had a good taste besides being quite spicy.
No prizes were given other than recognition. My other grandson and his dad did not participate, nor did any of the ladies present.
After getting home for the evening, I grilled a Strip Steak and some Yellow Squash and made sauteed mushrooms and a garden salad.

Back to the homestead grind today. Time to start gathering and stacking the various piles of firewood scattered about the place. There's still some debris leftover from the tornado that has to be gathered up, mostly in the woodlot area where I don't mow anyway. Most of the garden is unsalvageable, although I may still get some tomatoes. All of the quarter-sized ones and the blossoms were blown off the vine by the tornado and ensuing winds, and then it got too warm for the flowers to pollinate. I think that I will be able to harvest some squash soon, as those plants survived OK, but the fragile Green Bean plants will not recover.

The best thing that could have happened on Father's Day would have been an uninterrupted day out in the train shed. But that didn't happen. I never made it out there. Several projects are still in the works. I should rework that ground foam that washed away around Miss Betty's Diner; that shouldn't take long. And then repaint the spots in the parking lot that I scraped away when removing the foam from there. Rebuilding that house is also in the works since I have already printed it out and made a few cutouts. I'd like to run a train or three just to keep the engineers busy. No shortage of other stuff to do either.

Swal - Congratulations on the successful garage sale. At first I thought "Ten clocks! Holy Cow!". Then I counted and we have at least ten plus and at least that many more connected to appliances and Alexa. We may have even more back in the unused kids bedrooms!
That golf course law is an unusual law for New York. Who are they taxing to pay for it???
Troy -
As for old fart brains, hopefully, Dr. Ronnie Johnson can administer a cognitive test to both of them.
Did you mean Dr. Ronny Jackson? He's the one in Congress that was physician to both Trump and Obama in the White House, who now represents my former district in Congress. He has been very vocal about testing all older politicians.
David - Those news sources may hold a partisan agenda regarding their home country, but when reporting news from the states, they are mostly non-partisan. While that's where I get my unbiased news reporting, I also read both sides of the spectrum here, like CNN and Fox. Always interesting is their individual spins on the same news. I form my opinions after reading many sources.
Curt - If you landed at Love Field, then you flew directly over my property. All Southwest flights from the west come eastbound overhead and then turn south about 25 miles east of me. they're generally flying between 6500' and 8500' when over me. That is when prevailing winds are out of the south which they are about 325 days of the year here.
Terry - I have also been reading of the high maintenance costs, and the even higher costs for accident repair (and the ensuing rise in insurance costs). It's partly due to all of the sensors and other technology (some government mandated) that are in our vehicles now. Can't just replace a fender or bumper, a specialized mechanic has to install and calibrate all of the sensors.

Everybody have a great day.

Just repeating what #45 himself said, WILLIE

I know who Capt (US Navy) Ronny Jackson is.

In other news, hairs are trimmed, and wife went through her recipe box. She found the family recipe for “Frosted Chews”… probably taken from the back of a Special-K Cereal box. AKA: Scotcheroos.

We’ll probably have a pan of those by week’s end.
