I gotta give a plug to an app I really like. I'm not affiliated in any way, other then being a happy user.

I like to sit on the back patio in the evenings and listen to the birds. Cornell University's Lab of Ornithology has developed a bird ID application that works on either iPhone or Android. It will help you identify a bird based on visual cues, and can also "Listen" and tell you what birds it hears.

A really cool app that I use almost daily.

Thanks Jeff. I will check out the app. There are so many birds here and they make such different sounds. There are som Egbert looking things that everytime I come out here some thinks they are different then the last visit

I wish I would have known about this app the last time we were in Hawaii. Is today when you're going to be in Kapalua? I loved it up there. The Dragon's Teeth lava outcropping is pretty cool, and has a small blow hole that's approachable if teh conditions aren't too harsh. The Gazebo is small, but has good food. We stayed in Kahana, in a Suite at the Royal Kahana resort. It was perfect to have a kitchenette and 2 bedrooms since both our daughters were with us.

We were there in the rainy season, and got stuck in Hana due to a mud slide that happened when we were on the Hana side of it. No worries, we went to the red sand beach there, and chilled out for a couple of hours before heading back west.

All this talk about Hawaii. My wife is patiently waiting to go there.

We did spend a few hours in HNL on a layover on the way to Japan about 13 years ago (my only time in Hawaii) and she and the daughter did go for a few days about 9 years ago or so for a concert tour by a huge Japanese band that was having their 15th anniversary of when they started (which happened to be in Hawaii). They played 2 or 3 nights and TicketMaster sold individual tickets inside the US but most of the tickets were sold to Japanese fan club members who had to buy whole package deals of tickets, flights, hotels, etc. Her 2 sisters came from Japan and I had tickets for two nights for my wife and daughter and got an extra set one night for her sisters so they could attend both nights -- one from their package deal and one from us.

I keep getting her Hawaii calendars for Christmas in lieu of a trip :)

Aloha

It’s a day to relax! It was announced by the ladies last night we weren’t planning to do anything today. The brother asked this morning if I wanted to hit some golf balls on a course today. There are some very nice public courses around here and he has a tee time at 8:20 for the 2 of us. They added us this morning, it’s almost 6:30 am here so bro says he made the call around 5. He said 3 hours to play so should be home by noon. I know he’s gotta game planned as he asked this morning for my current handicap. And he also said bring cash. I’m carrying a 8.

I have a June 20 appointment and it is the second big reason I have to go home to see my Endocrinologist. She has become a very good friend to Terry and also my sister. She will be here tomorrow with her sister. I need to ask about my appointment as the Doc is staying to July 1. We will be having friends and a neighbor filtering in and out most of the Summer until the late part of August.

Being on island time where time just seems to be a number here, the only meaningful time today is being at the tee for 8:20. Dinner reservations for tonight are at 6:30 or as my brother says 6 or 7 it doesn’t matter. It’s not that way at home

The waves are really noisy this morning. It a great sound…

enjoy the day

Kapalua is for golf Thursday and Friday. I have played the Plantation course in a past visits. We played it twice when we were here in October. This time though it’s the Bay course alongside the water. We have been to the Dragon’s teeth and a couple nearby beaches with 1st time visitors. We have gone and checked out the sea turtle sanctuary with visitors. Terry keeps a check off list of places that must be seen. I want her after our 1st helicopter ride yesterday to add that to the adventure list. Putting it alongside the submarine ride, the snorkeling, para gliding behind a boat and the Road to Hana. That was a discussion last night around the dinner we had at home. We ate lunch yesterday at Honu Oceanside in Lahaina. Dinner last Friday was at Monkeypod Kitchen in Wailea and Sunday at Matteo’s Osteria in Wailea. Most of the other meals have been at home or occasionally at the brothers club. This afternoon and Wednesday I will help my brother move his office into his new house. After almost 26 months of building and a project he started planning before Covid his main house is ready to move into. He has a beautiful piece of the island but everything in the Wailea-Makena area is pretty stunning in my eyes. Terry keeps horses here, 4. The brothers property has a trail from her stables to a trail system that wanders all over southwestern Maui. If there are enough riders she can get more gentle horses from a neighbor here at no charge, she returns the favor when they need more. There is a way to ride the horses to the edge of the lava fields.

I enjoy being here, but after 10 days I get bored as I do not want to play golf everyday. Since I am not a tourist, I also don’t need to keep going back to places we have been to. It’s neat to see the eyes of wonder though in 1st time visitors. My brother is a golfer and with the club course closed until the 15th he’s been getting stir crazy. That’s why this week we have been out and about so much. He did love the helicopter though yesterday.

Enjoy

Good afternoon, Everybody!

Willie, what makes some jalapenos hot and others not so hot. Is there any way I can tell when I buy fresh jalapenos?
Short answer is no. Although smaller ones can be hotter than larger ones. If you grow them yourself, you can have some control. Jalapenos that are stressed from less than average water levels in the soil will be hotter. In the store, look for peppers that have a slightly veiny web (stress marks) at the stem end. Those tend to be hotter, but not always. Reddish ones are also hotter. Variety plays an important role in how hot they can be also. Here in Texas with it's large Hispanic population, I can go to a Mexican market and they have separate bins for the hotter varieties.

Afternoon All,

Started out at 68F heading to the high 80's today with zero chances of rain. MOH dragged me to Sam's Club for a mandatory 2-mile walk. I did get a new pair of Sketchers since my old ones were falling apart. Tomorrow after chores we are going to Lowes to buy 4 new bathroom sinks and faucets- joy. Thursday I'm driving up to see my buddy Jon. My Super Trees are due tomorrow, so I'll be working on trees again.

Hughie- Nice haul. I'm glad Willie figured out the problem with your kit.

David- Nice scenes. Great photos of your son.

TomO- Enjoy the rest of your vacation.

Sherrel- Welcome back. That is a sad looking F unit.

Willie- Great detailing.

I hope everyone has a good night.

Well howdy there internet peeps, and those checking-out veins in peppers

I'm sitting on the patio, doing something really important

Yep... the Kamado-smoker is in operation.

Hopefully, we'll be getting new garage walls in the near future. Our old converted carports got basic T-11 siding, and wooden 1x10 trim boards. Flat roofed. As a garage, it barely passes. But, it keeps the car dry, and gives me a place to store more stuff.

Rain is on the radar, coming in from Wisconsin's direction... hoping to get the tri-tip off the grill before that hits...

Good afternoon to each and everyone of you. Warm with a few passing thunderstorms. My little buddy doesn't like thunder, so he tries to get under my arm in order to hide. No reply from JL Innovations as yet. While I wait I started the Bar Mills Downtown Garage.

I think this is my 14th Bar Mills kit.

Louis - There is a brand of pickled Jalopenos, Mt. Olive if you can find them. They come in jars, hot or mild. They have another one called Sweet Heat which are very mild and sweet. Great in eggs or salads. If you are buying fresh peppers it's a crap shoot. My opinion, fresh are hotter than pickled.
Troy - Keep BBQ'ing like that and you might qualify to be a Texan 🤠🤠🤠🤠

STAY SAFE

Ketchup has to go on everything - mainly to kill the taste of what your eating :)
Only if you can’t cook lol, but I like ketchup with American mustard, I like roast beef with French style mustard or horseradish, ketchup by its self is not tangy enough, mayo or Greek full fat yogurt with chicken herbs salt pepper on the day differ, pork with salt apple sauce is ok but a bit sweet as is bbq I like a Thai style chilli soy touch tomato mix with Greek yogurt - don’t diss it til you try it, the chilli can be super hot because the yogurt creams it and cools it, the other half likes jack daniels sauce not my favourite neat or otherwise,

Thank you, Willie. I will remember that!

My wife likes to cook whole jalapenos in her goulash. If you want the heat, you cut it open in your bowl. If not, (that's me) you don't take any.

I seldom eat anything hot. It overpowers the flavor of what I'm eating. When I eat jalapenos, I like the pickled ones. In salsa, on nachos and sometimes on hotdogs. And with crackers. extra sharp cheddar, and pepperoni.

We do have Mount Olive; I like their dill pickles! I will look for their jalapenos. Thank you!

Yep! Don't knock it 'til ya try it. 😁

I love to experience different flavours when I cook.
A simple dinner tonight though. Corned Beef Hash. Bring your own bottle. You are all welcome.

David
Corn beef hash needs brown sauce even if enough onions, and I do not eat brown sauce on much else, the other half likes it on bacon sarnies I abhor anything on my bacon sarnie unless it’s a fried egg or a sausage. Sauce just wrecks it.

When I was a boy the couple who raised me always had dessert. Ice cream float with root beer was my second favorite. Baked rice pudding was my favorite! They never asked me what I wanted for dessert. The reason they said was, "you can't have rice pudding every night"

I hadn't had baked rice pudding like that since 1972. That is until my then girlfriend (soon to be wife) made it for me in 2003. Talk about checking all the boxes. My wife is amazing!

Now I'm diabetic. Either God has a twisted sense of humor or I'm getting some of my upcoming punishment early.
Rice milk cream and erythritol and Keto vanilla makes an almost as good result nutmeg or cinnamon if desired, I like ginger syrup also a no
