Mike, didn't know about that one at all. all the local media is concerned about this week, are National Issues, that don't affect Jersey. Hopefully, yesterday's rainfall helped the Fire Fighters.
That Bear photo was cool...Almost like something Yogi would do...;)

Gary: That's the second incident within a week, involving an Amtrak Train at an unmarked private crossing. Both, involved three fatalities.
My problem with Superliners and other double level passenger cars is they are top heavy and sway under normal conditions. Add the tight lock couplers, and striking a dump truck broadside and you get that type of result.

Willie: Ah ha! You noticed too, eh? I thought I was the only one who felt that way.

Considerably cooler today, only 72° presently, sunny and going to 80°
Joe- I realize that forest fires are essentially for new growth of the pitch pine, but it saddens me because I know the destructive power of fire. I have many fond memories from my childhood, as well as a youth & adult of canoe camping the river system of the Pine Barrens(Wading, Oswego, Batsto & Mullica Rivers), as well as hiking various trails such as the Batona Trail.
The SW Chief that derailed had 2 Boy Scout troops from Appleton(WI) aboard who helped rescue passengers & crew. They were heading home from Philmont Adventure Camp in NM.

Good Evening!

The dentist turned out to be a young female; probably a full 10, but, half of her face was covered with masking, so I'll have to give her a 9-1/2.
She took an x-ray and a couple of inside the mouth photos. Found something interesting. She had a fancy name for it, but, I'll just call it a bump hiding behind the sore molar.
Long story short, she refused to pull the tooth. Now I need to go see a specialist in Edmonton, and get a biopsy done. The female dentist sent me away with a 7 day supply of antibiotics. - That's ok; the pain is subsiding anyway. It's been five days.

I kinda feel like this tired old SD40 that has reflective duc-tape spread out across it's sore beak:

Just thought I'd let yu'all know how it went.

Have a good night.

Guy, that sounds about par for the course. years ago, I had this molar that needed to be extracted. extractions were beneath the Dentist I had then,so he sent me to an Oral Surgeon in the next town, who removed it before I even had time to think about it. He found a growth, which I had removed and biopsied. I smoked then and was concerned. It turned out to be negative. Never had to go back to the guy, but he was good.

I'm looking at several extractions and two new partials, hopefully, later rather than sooner. The price of dentistry is high, and the care quality is down. Last really good dentist, ended up going to jail, as he fitted cameras in the ladies rest room...and got caught.

the wife had a tooth that needed to be removed about 20 years ago when we lived in New Hampshire and were newly married. She had two teeth that were bunched up, one in front of the other, and they were just pulling the one.

The dentist referred her to an oral surgeon. We made an appointment and he examined her. The surgeon's office said that our insurance covered extracts at 80% so we had to pay the 20%. OK. This was after the exam they said this.

They scheduled the actual extraction for another day.

We went back on the day of the appointment. The wife was called back and in about 5 minutes (no exaggeration), she was back -- mission accomplished.

A few weeks later we got a bill demanding more money from the oral surgeon. I wrote a letter and said that they told us the insurance would cover 80% and we had already paid the 20%. I got the EOB (explanation of benefits) and the oral surgeon had actually submitted it as a "surgery", for which the reimbursement was only 50% and he wanted the difference.

I wrote him a letter and said that he was lying in his coding as the wife had only been back there 5 minutes -- not enough time for "surgery" and that no surgery was needed or performed. The wife said he had just reached in and pulled it and did not do anything resembling surgery (she is an RN so has a clue, though not a dental nurse). They wrote to me saying that he had to make a small incision so it was therefore a "surgery." I wrote back and said that no incision was necessary (and referenced their exam results) and the wife told me that they made no incision that she could tell. She wasn't even back there long enough for them to have properly "prepped" for a surgery/incision. And after the original exam they did not say there would be any "surgery" but just an extraction.

I wrote back saying I wasn't paying, that they were lying, and if they persisted I would report them to the state dental licensing / regulators for falsifying their billing coding.

I never did hear back from them.

Sounds like you have an infection round or under the tooth, dentists tend not to work on them as
1) If it needs extraction, anaesthetics won't work, so it would be extremely painful
2) the infection once released will infect other teeth.
You'll probably find the antibiotics will clear the infection by the time you see the specialist.

Morning all,

Not much going on yet. Headed to the office shortly. Not going to be fun. At least no calls.

DJ: You nailed the Cadillac Ranch, but depends on the wind direction. I will say it is further from the road than all the travel pictures and documentaries seem to show. Someone got smart as they have a trailer they sell trinkets, snacks and spray paint.

Well, howdy there internet people, and those that throw china at the wall and watch the ketchup run....

It's Troy again...

Got wife's new computer monitor set. It wasn't adjustable in height, but, being a model RRer and gamer, I have plenty of foam around. Found a 2-inch thick piece and cut off a hunk big enough to rest the monitor on and get it up to the height she needs.

Today is her birthday! For the next eight days, we're the same age.

In addition to the monitor (and converter cable) I got her this:
screwball.jpg

A recommendation from the girl who cuts my hair. She says it tastes somewhere between peanut butter and butterscotch.

Wife and I tried it last night. I was "Meh" but wife liked it. And she's not a fan of whiskey.

I'm humping the words today, trying to chain them into a train of sense and logic. Wife was up before 5am when I got up. Work is crushing her this week, so she's trying to get caught up before her birthday dinner tonight. Her sis is coming out, and we're heading off to get Italian - then a stop at Culvers for frozen custard (ice cream).

Good morning all! 52 headed for sunny and 86. I missed posting here yesterday and only had time for a brief look so I'll admit I haven't read all the posts since my last visit. Very busy day at work yesterday and probably will be busy again today which I like. I'd much rather stay busy all day.

Briefly talked to the instructor of the class I'm taking at the college yesterday. He said I'm doing great and he thinks I'm on track to finish the class with an A. After so many years out of college it's nice to hear that I'm doing well on my part-time return.

Been working on my home network during my downtime. I took an old computer and turned it into a pfSense router/firewall for home recently. Still learning how to administer it. I'd like to set up a VPN with it but the modem/router/firewall supplied by my Internet service provider blocks everything and I have no access to the control panel in it to unblock stuff. I'd like to just turn off its firewall since I run my own and that would allow me to get the VPN going. I talked to someone there yesterday and asked them to see if they can turn off their firewall so I can just take care of that stuff myself. Waiting to hear back from them. I love the fiber internet service they provide but I wish I had more control over things. I could upgrade and get a static IP address which would give me more control but that would be another $15 a month and I don't really want to do that. We don't really have any other good options for internet service where I live so I'm stuck with whatever I can get with my current package. I wouldn't want to leave them anyway but I would like more control.

Mcleod: Hope the tooth gets better soon!

Nothing else to report. Hope you all have a great day!

Great to hear your doing well on your studies, not easy going back to school. :)

I use a few computer screens in my setup.
The right screen is my internet.
Bottom center can be toggled to internet or video editor screen. In this picture it's toggled to the video editor timeline.
Left screen is dedicated video editor. Usually used for the effects pallets.
Top screen can be toggled between TV and video editor. In this picture it's toggled to video editor for the actual picture view.
The actual internet computer is built into the screen on the right. The video editor is the black box next to the screen on the right.

Good morning from per the TV weather person Eastern Iowa. We are in Coralville just outside Iowa City which is the home to the University of Iowa. We will head there this morning, temperatures will hit 90f.

Yesterday we visited the Amana Colonies and the Hoover Presidential Library and Muesum. The Library was very interesting and learned much about Hoover that is rarely mentioned or glossed over on Wikipedia and the History Channel sources I generally hit up. Over all, I am a history buff and as the 8 Presidential Libraries we have attened show us, there are 2 sides or more to these guys.

The Amana Colonies was fine. We visited 3 of the 7 and that was more then enough. Touristy money traps IMO. Reading about them online was more educational then any of the plaques we read yesterday.

Terry and I like to travel the USA and mainly by car. While we can afford the latest price increases the price of traveling is a lot higher then the 15% the government has been touting as a number. We stay when on these road trips at Holiday Inn Expresses. The room rate is $32 higher then our trip in the Spring. We get many a free night, the breakfast that Terry rarely eats but I do is free. We have been to just one since retirement in 2014 that I complained to management about it’s cleaniness. Gas prices have ranged from $4.54 for regular at home to $4.94 alongside I-80 outside of Davenport, Iowa with a 2 $4.44 per gallon stations in Dubuque, Iowa as we crossed the Mississippi. But of course being only 78 miles from home the car didn’t need any then! We did end up taking my VW Jetta instead of either of her 2 gas guzzlers. Normal for me is 33-38 mpg in city. In the Eco mode yesterday we hit 45 mpg on open 4 lane highways at 70mph speed limits doing about an actual 77 on cruise control.

Heading down to get more coffee for the beloved, enjoy your day

Good Morning All. Clear and an incredibly cool 65° this morning. However we will return to our regularly scheduled weather tomorrow. Under cloudy skies the past two days, the pool temperature has also dropped from 83° yesterday evening, to 80° this morning! It will take a day or two to warm up again, but this is comfortable for now.

Wife went alone to Dallas with the birthday cake for my daughter yesterday while I waited for the repairman for the dishwasher. He told me to spray some WD-40 on the wires underneath to deter rodents. Apparently they don't like the smell or taste. Unfortunately he told me that after he put everything back together and was going out the door; or else I would have handed him a can while it was open.

These cooler temperatures are a blessing for the garden. Attention: Biology lesson ahead. Tomato plants are what's known as self-pollinating; they do not need insects to pollinate themselves. However, pollination is not successful when nighttime temperatures remain above 75°, except for a few hybrid varieties. So my plants are going through a real active time right now, on top of another time span about two weeks ago. Not our normal weather. What this means to me is quite an extended harvest. Meanwhile the plants have grown much taller than their 4' tall cages.

They are full of tomatoes as well.

IMG_1178.JPG

So what has this led to?
IMG_1185.JPG

This is after we used about two dozen on Monday to make some jars of salsa. Plus we sent some to both of our daughters in Dallas.
I have to pick while they are still partially green to stay ahead of the grasshoppers who are able to pierce the skins of fully ripe ones. These will ripen indoors in 2-5 days.
Here's a variety that I haven't grown before called Juliette. It is a meaty variety with very few seeds and less juice than many other varieties, thus making it ideal for making spaghetti sauce.
IMG_1186.JPG

Another variety that I have grown for years is known as Black Krim. It is a juicy large variety that is bred for fresh eating which my wife likes. She eats them like apples.
IMG_1189.JPG

Yep! That's my telephone photo-bombing the picture for size comparison. They are larger than apples, almost softball size. She can't eat all of them, so some got made into salsa Monday.

Thanks for all of the likes and comments regarding the layout shots yesterday; James, Tom O, Smudge, Karl, Joe, Hughie, Dave B, Louis, Sherrel, Jaz, Tom, Patrick, Mikey, Guy, Gary, OB Ken.

Took a little time out in the train shed yesterday, but just ran trains instead of working on projects. Here's a shot of the bracing work on the still incomplete billboard.
IMG_1166.JPG

Mike - No known bears in my part of the world. There was a mountain lion that I got pictures of about 6 years ago, but it has not been seen lately.
Todd - Here's wishing you safe travels on this journey.
Jaz - See above. Your tomatoes may just need a shot of nitrogen. Organically I provide that with either a dose of fish emulsion, manure tea, or a dusting of blood meal around the plants. Not too much as it might favor leaf growth over flower production.
Patrick - Is the Conoco station in Shamrock Texas still operating? None of the others appeared to be. Shame what the taggers did at the Cadillac Ranch, although it is encouraged by the originators of the project. I saw it at it's old location closer to Amarillo in the late 70's, when most of the cars were still in their original colors.
Jeff - I usually miss the fireworks display at the neighbors house up the road as I am usually in Dallas at my brother's home across the road from a major display put on by the country club there. Neighbor and his buddies typically spend $3000-$4000 combined. They are smart enough to aim everything at the just plowed wheat field across the road, Some years they cross the fence and set them off in the field itself which they will most likely do this year. It hasn't rained here since 6-1 and grass fires are probable.
Guy - Sorry to read of your predicament with the tooth. At least the dentist was honest enough to admit it was beyond her training. My dentist is a licensed oral surgeon as well as a dentist. Quite convenient.

Everybody have a great day.
