McDonald’s hamburgers are the worst. Sorry Louis.

Not everyone has them but I’ll take an In-N-Out burger any day. For the same money more or less.

Of the big 3, I’d go to Wendy’s first, and then BK.

—

Not sure what day it came as it was delivered at my mom’s house as I used my parent’s address long ago for. But today I got my annual disclosure letter from HypoVereinsbank (as it is now called), a unit of UniCredit, based in Munich.

I worked in Munich for Digital Equipment GmbH, the German unit of Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC), based in Massachusetts and one time the second largest computer company in the world. They made the PDP-11 and VAX and Alpha minicomputers, RSX and VMS operating systems, and a host of other products. DEC didn’t survive the PC onslaught, though it tried and had its own lines of PCs, and was bought by Compaq in 1998, which in turn was bought by HP in early 200x. HP is now two units, HP and HPE. Some elements of DEC can be seen in HPE still. And the Microsoft OSes based on Windows NT owe a debt to DEC as the guy who lead the NT effort, Dave Cutler, was along time DEC architect and he brought a bunch of DEC engineers with him to MS and those familiar with VMS can see a lot of influence in NT and its follow ons.

But I digress. I worked at the DEC German HQ in Munich for about a year and a half in 91-93. I’d previously worked for DEC in New Hampshire. And we moved to Mass when I was 10 because my dad got a job with DEC.

So living in Germany I had a Girokonto (more or less “checking account” equivalent in Germany) at the then Bayerische Vereinsbank. It’s Bebe I got paid, and how I managed my money in Germany. I also signed up for a special type of investment account called a Vermögenswirksameleistungskonto. It was a special account formelle working who could specify a certain amount from their paycheck go intro it and timeouts grow at a certain percentage. But the real advantage was that after 7 years they’d lay a 14% bonus. So I had this for most of the 18 months I was working. When I left Germany I left the Girokonto open as I still had money coming and going for a while and also because jt was the base account along with this special investment account. I wanted to leave it for the 7 years to get my 14% bonus in the limited amount I’d put in while working.

Fast forward to the Fall of 2000. My new wife and I went to Germany for a 7 day visit. We went to a different branch of the bank and closed out the investment account and wanted to close all the accounts but they said I could only close the main account at the same branch I opened it at. But I could take most of the money. Since took everything but about $5 worth or so and left it. We never did get back to Munich or the branch I had used to open it at. So that basic account that I had like $5 or less at was left open. Even today. They had my US address at my parents house so since 1993 I’ve been getting yearly postal letters at that address containing a cover letter and a copy of the current rates and Terms and Conditions for accounts and that sort of thing. This years cover letter explained again that they were required to send it and that nothing had changed since last year and to please see the attached sheet for details.

All for an account that had around $5 worth in it 25 years ago. They’ve spent a lot more in postage than the value of the account. I find it funny.

If I ever do get back to Germany I will go and close it if I’m in Munich. The bank has merged and been acquired a few times at least since then but the letters keep coming.

A few more from the road trip, and i was completely soaked that day. It wasn't until i got out from Kalispell area that everything was just starting to dry up;

This is snowshed #10, which seemed the easiest to get to of all the snowsheds.

Even standing under i was still being rained on through the creases between the huge wooden beams. After several minutes an eastbound came through:

Next was the cantilever signal which i spotted there last year, but this time decided to capture some action with it visible...and the soaking rain continues:

An eastbound was coming to a stop and it took several minutes to figure out why. A late running Empire Builder was being let through;

Temp was 75F at 7:00 am and 79 at 8:00 am when I started mowing grass.
About two weeks ago, I lost the pully tensioning spring on the mower deck of the lawn tractor.

A new spring arrived at the mower shop Friday and took 15 minutes to install. ( Plus 6 minutes for me to get up off the ground. )
Being almost 80 and a lazy fat man, I waited for cooler Sat. morn to mow the grass. Got 3/4 done and ran out of gas. Getting hotter, but I drug out the self-propelled trim mower. It ran out of gas after 10 minutes and I was useless by then.

Got gas after church on Sunday at noon, but the heat index was over 100.

I gassed up the trim mower this morning as there is only about 1000 square feet to finish mowing. Mower started on the second pull and did well in the high, wet grass for about a minute. After about 10 pulls on the starter rope, I was muttering about the mower's parentage.
THEN, I realized the gas line was turned off. Turned the gas line on and apologized to the mower when it started on the second pull again.

The grass around the back stairs was last cut about 6 weeks ago, so it was about 10 inches high, thick and wet from overnight dew. The mower kept choking on the heavy grass and took 15 minutes to cut with the trim mower. Soaked in sweat, I staggered back to the basement garage and put the mower up. As I passed thru the train room, I decided to sit down and organize some of the items on my work desk for the next 30 minutes. I finally made it upstairs for a glass of ice water.

Gentlemen and ladies, my advise to you is don't get old; don't get fat and don't try to work in 100 degree heat.
And stay hydrated!
My great uncle said "don't get old" as well...

I think playing with trains helps, at least it has worked so far...

Loving the pictures.
See the different shades of colour in the ballast
The colours in the wall of picture 2
The fifty shades of green and brown on the grassy banks
The colours in the rocks above the tunnel entrance
The trees and bushes growing there also.

Dare to be different? Do little things like that on your layout. That bit extra.
Move your layout to the next league.

You know that's not a real fish though...
It actually is real fish. it's not "a" real fish. It's usually Pollack or other junk white fish factory trawled and sold as a processed fish. I saw something on Discovery channel or similar about the factory trawlers and what they caught and where it all went. McDonalds, IIRC, was a big purchaser of the Pollack. Also the crappy American style imitation crab is made from it. (As opposed to good Japanese imitation crab).

So you're saying he has a good camera? haha

Good evening. I thought today was a beautiful day topping out at 84f degrees. While it was a fairly cloudless day the morning smoke haze was pretty nasty looking and it did smell. But around 1 the haze seemed to have moved on.

Terry hit the grocery stores this morning and came home a bit shocked. It seems the tariffs may finally be hitting the grocery items. forgers coffee was the one she was muttering about the most. Seems it’s on sale for $11.99a container. She still has 5 left but that’s only 2.5 months for her. English muffins normally on sale 2-1 at $6.00 was 1 for $5.00. I guess we will see.

The Pacific Northwest trip is booked. Flying into Vancouver, 4 nights there at a AirB&B. A whale watching trip is part of the agenda. Amtrak 3 hours to Seattle for 3 nights. Then Amtrak 35 hours to LA and we did book the suggested roomette. 3 nights for sure in Pasadena to see my sister. We did not book a flight home to Wisconsin as the brother is still lobbying for us to fly out to Maui, so we will decide when we arrive at my sisters. It should be a good time starting 8/24. Normally we are not this organized but not having been to Vancouver for more than 1 night to see the BlackHawks play the Canucks we decide to not just wing it.

After the grandson woke up this morning we went to the new place to look at the slot track that he said was shorting out. It wasn’t but it was only having intermittent contact. The wires connecting each module were not fully engaged. Next week he is planning a race and sent out invites to quite a few friends. They can bring their own 1/32 scale cars or use what is at the track already. All have raced on this track. I received an invite email this evening to act as a steward on the 30rd which is a layout work session but the grandson comes 1st. One of the other guys in the layout work session group also was invited as a steward as he has a granddaughter who was invited to race. This should be fun, he is going to buy a small trophy (out of his own pocket) for each of the 3 class winners. The SIL says this is mainly Brooks and his main 2 buddies and now 1 buddette doing the organizing but getting approvals from mom and dad.
