My son was a member of the Pensacola NAS Credit Union, and had a Visa card with them. He was deployed to Iraq, over Christmas and attempted to buy a gift for his mother through a Jacksonville NC jeweler. PennFed refused to process his transaction and locked his card, because he didn't call and advise them he was out of the country. (This is a military populated CU)..... No amount of intervention swayed the CU.
What your CU is doing sounds similar. The one I belong to is the opposite. I Locked the card to prevent bogus charges. Credit Unions are not what they used to be...
Navy Federal did the same to me. While it was a hassle, in the long run, I think it was better. I ensure that I send them a message before buying anything from a foreign land. They know I buy stuff from the UK, so that's good. I recently bought something from Canada, so I dropped them a note.

Have a great Tuesday!;)

Good morning Crew and those sorting through banking crap…

The weather in So Central Wisconsin has been different than the predictions of the local media stars and the NWS. 15% was the highest chances of rain yesterday. At 4pm though we received just under 1/2” of 100% rain. Same thing overnight, less than 10% chances and I woke up to the pitter patter of rain against the windows at 3:45. Just a bit over 1/2” pf rain in my unofficial rain gauge. Terry has the TV on and the local media weather cutie says those were pop up storms! The high today will be in the mid 80’s.

I helped out yesterday at a friend’s local layout. 9 to 12:30 and we got lots done. Another 32’ on 3 levels and all the framework will be complete. The owner figures the mainline will be over 1200’ but with plenty of switching opportunities. The framework will definitely get finished this month and in August the mainline will be completed on the currently being built 3 level Peninsula. Then the real fun begins…

I will venture over to the vineyard this morning to oversee the grandson. The SIL is installing posts for adding more vines this September. Last week he was teaching the 11 year old grandson how to drive the tractor and set up for the post hole digging. He seems to have figured it out. But the SIL has a meeting this morning and doesn’t want the grandson out there alone. He’s up to 9 holes an hour not bad after a week. His dad is averaging 12.

My toughest decision today will be to eat before the granddaughters game at 6:30 or out afterwards. Tough life, I know!!!

Enjoy the day

Good morning all!

Currently 72F heading up to 80f. Skies are mostly sunny now, but rain is expected to move into the area later on
this morning. As I have said before, we really need a decent rain. Everything but the weeds are dry.

Last night we went to watch the volleyball league my daughter is in for the high school freshman. They looked really
good. The Catholic school my daughter attended had a really good team last year. The public grade school also had
a good team that did well. They both went deep in regionals. With the two teams now combined in high school they
are going to be strong. Actually kind of looking forward to the season, Afterward we stopped for dinner at Culvers
and of course had to get Concrete mixers for the ride home.

Doing a few things around the house today. but nothing big.

Have a safe day everyone!

Good Morning All. Partly cloudy and 73°; might hit 90° today for the first time this July! Rather unusual to go this long. Scattered thunderstorms are in the forecast for this afternoon. A short burst of rain yesterday just after noon left 0.15" in the gauge. Same forecast for the next ten days, low 90's in the day, low 70's at night. Cooler than our average summer so far.

Tele-Doc appointment with my PCP yesterday went OK despite some technical issues. End result is an adjustment in one medication. Wife's eye procedure went OK later in the afternoon. She goes back today for a follow-up and she convinced the ophthalmologist to go ahead and schedule my laser surgery for my right eye while we are in town today. My surgery is to remove scar tissue resulting from the cataract surgery a few years ago. It is only in my right eye and I didn't even realize that it was an issue until I went in last week for the routine follow-up.

I'll mow this morning and rake up some grass clippings for mulch in the garden. I have some heavy "hay rows" in the NW part of the yard where I couldn't get to due to rainy conditions for two weeks. Hell! Even the Bermuda Grass was 8" tall.

While I did get out to the train shed yesterday, I didn't do much. In an effort to liven up the next "operating" session", I pulled out my maintenance train to start moving from location to location to get in the way of other operations, for a few sessions. However since it has been probably 5 years since I used it, I have to do a bit of maintenance on many of the cars. Since it is not a frequent runner, most of the cars still have their stock plastic wheels and at least two still have McHenry couplers on them. The couplers will be replaced, but I will just clean the wheels rather than change them. Especially since I use it so rarely. It is 9 cars in length, including 2 tool cars, 2 flatcars with stuff, a tanker with diesel, a gondola with scrap, a dining/sleeper car, a 250 ton crane and a crane tender/caboose. I will take some pictures when I am done cleaning the cobwebs and dust off them.

Kusojiji - When I go for an MRI, they let me bring in a Pink Floyd CD to play on the headset while I am in the tube. Very relaxing for me at least. One of the techs told me that they played it over the speakers in the room, which they normally turn off. I think that the CT scan with the intravenous shot is a chemical stress test, done in lieu of walking on a treadmill. I've had a couple in the last 15 years. It might have been something different for you though.
Tom O - I enjoy being a lone operator on my layout, both out of necessity and the desire to be this way. But I do envy the fact that you have so many other layouts that you can enjoy (building and operating) besides your own. Keeps things from becoming stale.
Marlin - Hoffman farms looks like a great place to visit. Too bad that you can't drive the train, or can you?
Louis - A bit of a follow up to your queries yesterday regarding "A" sides and "B" sides of 45 singles. More frequently than A's and B's being from different albums, B sides later being released as A sides was more common. Two that come to mind immediately are Elvis Presley's Hound Dog which was originally the B side of Don't Be Cruel. Another one that I can think of without researching is the Beach Boys' Don't Worry Baby, which was first released as the B side of I Get Around. It proved to be more popular and was re-released as the A side.
Troy - Isn't Outback a little out of your comfort zone? I don't recall seeing pizza on their menu.;)

While not in my usual genre of music, today is the late Toby Keith's birthday.
Everyone have a terrific Tuesday.

Well, howdy there internet peeps and those in retirement land

It's troy again.

Birthday festivities are over for another year. Need to prep for the anniversary in 10 days.
And a niece is getting married this weekend. So a road trip to South Bend IN on Saturday. That means I need to go get both an anniversary card for the wife, and a wedding card for the happy couple.

Good thing I was making a grocery run.

Wife asked for sweet corn when I suggested burgers on the grill. Sounds like I'm firing up the kamado. Do the sweet corn, then the burgers on it.

Did some editing and wording of words today. Only 774 words, but the story is progressing.

I'm trying to figure out which political newsletters to keep. I subscribe to a few on substack. Unfortunately, some of the ones I want to read every day show up first thing in the morning. And I need the mornings without reminders of politics, because that will sour my mood immediately and turn the day into grumping and ranting instead of working.

I'm trying out the substack app. It will text, so I'm not tempted to click the link and read right them. Before anyone suggests "just ignore it until you're ready..." it's not that easy. When I see the red notification dot, I HAVE to click it. I'm like a cat with a laser dot. ATTACK! It's just the way I'm wired. And Substack HAS to notify you. You can't come back later and check to see if it has fresh content. Someone hits publish, it send an email or text.

I don't want to unsubscribe, but I don't want the distraction first thing in the morning. I need to save my ranting for later in the day after I've been all happy and creative wording the words.

We'll see how the app works out for me.

Plenty of choice and none of the shenanigans. Not saying all are equal but you have plenty of choice to avoid the stupidity

When I first came here, there were three times the current number of banks and CUs to choose from. These banks had multiple branches including branches in supermarkets and Walmart, when it opened. Over time, everything was consolidated. Three branches became one, no convenience banks, fewer ATMs etc. The Covid Lock down, showed banks they did not need the already downsized facilitys they had, and employees liked coming to work and not having to deal with customer problems in person.

If I go to the local branch, more than once a year, outside of using the ATM, it's for an unusual or unsolvable problem. Much of my banking is automated. Less stressful that way.

That's the reason why I avoid political newsletters. I can do with less rage. Enough of it seeps through the cracks in my wall as it is. (It's even what dominates the business news wire).

Once work is done, you can tune in to your poison of choice and go at it......maybe a separate mail address for that subject?

Back from the grocery.

Forgot to get the cards.

That means another trip later this week. Might have to stop and get an Amish donut on the way out.

when it comes to apps and red dots, I do the same thing as Terry, EXCEPT for email. It's in the bottom bar of the ipad and iphone. I start the morning with the ipad while I wait on the coffee to brew. I'm usually leaning against the counter, eating my cup of yogurt and slice of pre-cooked bacon.

Since the newsletters are showing up in the morning, I need to clear that red dot. I'm not awake enough to hit and swipe to archive it... and in Gmail, I haven't figured out how to un-archive something. That seems to be the delete into a black hole option. But if I open the email and hit the trash cash icon, I can find the email again.

Of course, with my squirrel brain, I'll never go into the trash can to get it. Too many other things get in the way. But, if I have an app on the second screen I can flip to once the words are worded for the day, Ooooo! Red Dot! Click!

Good morning all,

Big news day at the Banta estate, mowed the lawn, relocated a dead snapper, harvested a meal of beets and greens, cut up a nice Birch tree for firewood, and cleaned up a lot of brush

Dead snapper? Smelled dead animal smell a couple days ago by one of our ponds and telltale Turkey Vulture circling low in a curious fashion. Decided to get the chain saw over there and clear out the brush, and uncovered an ancient snapping turtle freshly dead. Looks like she could not make it up the bank to lay her eggs, she was half in the water and half out, with head pointing up. Smelled awful.

I went with the thumbnail so as not to gross everyone out. This is the underside after carrying it on a shovel further away from the house. Rear foot and tail on left side, belly up, head on the right. Neck larger than a big man's wrist. When the animals and maggots are done with her, the shell will adorn our yard.

Died of old age. RIP

On a happier note, our grill and burger setup. Iced tea on the stand.

Train shed most of the day, details and sorting cars. Recovery from all of the business of yesterday.

Willie: Dark Side of the Moon? That would be my Pink Floyd album pick. Back in my Grateful Dead days it would have been Blues for Allah.

Remarkably interesting stuff, thank you. My sisters collected 45s, but I never did. I wish I had those 45s. It would be fun to look through them. I can still remember the green case with a white handle they kept them in.

I had very few 45s. My collection was LPs on 33rpm.
When I was a boy I loved the 78s - Decca, Parlophone, HMV etc. Play them on the wind-up player. A new needle required after playing five records.
'Put a nickel in the Nickelodeon' by Teresa Brewer. At the time I wondered what a Nickelodeon was?

I still listen to the music of the 1940s-1960s on Alexa.
