Same Ol' Buzzard
Good Morning All. Clear and 23°, supposed to hit 55° later on. The wintry forecast will finally hit us, later this week it is supposed to get nasty.
Those 7° nights are scary since homes around this part of the country aren't built for that kind of weather. Exposed plumbing under pier & beam houses. That 7" of snow on Saturday won't be fun either, since snow plows are non-existent around here. But it isn't as bad as some years that we have had in the past but still survived. No rolling blackouts are being discussed this year like they were in Feb. 2021.
Running a little late this morning because I went back to get a few more minutes of sleep after loading the heater and starting this post. A few minutes turned into more than an hour!
As I posted yesterday, we made a wasted trip to town and I'll be going back today. Although today I will only be going local about 12.5 miles away to the PO and pharmacy. Wife's eye doctor appointment which was re-scheduled for this Friday has since been moved back to February rather than us traveling during the predicted 2.2" of rain proceeding the snow! I've become more discretionary as I have aged.
Over the next couple of days, I will be moving a supply of firewood to the sheltered front porch to avoid trudging through the possible snow coming up.
Had an issue out in the train shed yesterday while running a few trains. I had a Kato SD40-2 that just wouldn't run. There's a well known issue with this particular model regarding a design flaw with the electrical pick-up. I've known about this flaw for over 20 years, but it never had affected me yet; until yesterday. I decided to attack it yesterday instead of setting the engine aside. Took over an hour dissembling it and working on it. But I was successful. A long term fix is to remove the contact strips and solder wires from the truck to the light board, but soldering is not my strong suit. This is the one and only engine model that Kato used this design on, and it has been known as a problem since the beginning of production in 1999.
As I posted yesterday, on Sunday I added drivers to two convertibles so I could put them on the road instead of a parking lot. Surgery was needed on both, even though I started with "seated" figures. Here's one.
The results of both including passengers.
The Mustang is a recent Oxford model and theKarmen Ghia Porsche is a 20 year old Malibu International model, which I believe are actually counterfeit Model Power models from the 90's. I don't remember all of the details, but they were super cheap at Walmart at the time. I have many that I had bought, and I also bought a bunch from a fellow forum member who was getting out of the model railroad hobby at the time.
Tom O - Cold weather is always on my mind here. I just really don't like it. Anything below 35° bothers me. I have no issues with our 100°+ days here in the summer.
Good luck to Terry in getting the family situation under control. I remember some of your posts from a few years ago regarding the sister. I always feel fortunate that those situations don't exist in either of our families.
John - I'm not really looking to make any money on the pennies that I still have. I'm just hoping to have enough to last the rest of my modeling days. I have containers and boxcars full, as I have been using them as weight for 35+ years.
Convenience for us is having anything within 15 miles! In the last year, there has been a Dollar General and a liquor store opening just 6 miles away. While I have no need for the liquor store, the Dollar General is good for odds & ends that we might run out of.
Lonnie - I had seen that older video of the UP engine catching fire before. Interesting that it happened again in the same area.
Everybody have a great Tuesday.
