Good morning again. It’s still cool in Wisconsin. -4f degrees now feeling like -24, but hey there! The SUN IS SHINING!

I am heading out beyond the curb this after noon. The grandson texted and I laughed and ignored it. Then he called. Was asking if I could come be a chaperone for 8 possibly 16 slot car racers. I said yes but only if he gets another if there are going to be 16 racers. 1/2 hour later he had 2 others. So from 1-5 I will be supervising slot car racers. They have been good kids and I except no issues.

I’m in the train room getting things organized for the rest of the day and week. We warm into the 20’s on Thursday but back to single digit highs on Friday and Saturday. So unless Terry gets real closed in feeling we won’t be venturing out too often this week.

I did set up my SADs light walls in the big aisle of the train room this morning. That took maybe 10 minutes. So far I haven’t needed them but better than sorry.

Had to stop at the Pharmacy yesterday for my 1st refill of the new year. This prescription has been zero co-pay for years. But because our politicians know what’s best for us and are allowing insurance companies to deny coverage I was dropped by my supplemental coverage. So after Medicare pays 80% I’m self insured. So my portion the pharmacy tech says is $246. I tell her I’m self insured after Medicare and what’s my cost. $246 she says, before I can say something the Pharmacist comes over and says to her he’s self insuring use this button. My payment $47. Insurance and medical billing are a scam. This coming from a guy who made good money selling collection services to medical businesses for unpaid debt

Have a great day

Well, that was a mostly wasted trip! The eye doctor was out sick and his staff didn't bother to call anyone. Wasted 50 mile round trip. Then it appears that my PCP's staff didn't OK a prescription refill, twice now, even after I called them on Friday; so that stop was also a waste. We did mail some bills at the outside post office box, but I had forgotten MLK day and couldn't mail a small package that I wanted to mail. In addition, we had a package waiting notification in our mailbox from Saturday that I couldn't pick up either. At least the PO and pharmacy are just 12.5 miles away. The package waiting is from Chet, with some more stuff from his old layout, so that's a real disappointment.
Wife wanted to explore the new Tom Thumb grocery store in town, now that the thrill of the grand opening is over. Not bad. Much smaller than our usual Kroger in Denton, but what I saw was OK. Prices are comparable and they have a frequent shopper program, but no gas pumps or gas points. Didn't expect pricing to be different because I know that Tom Thumb is wholly owned by Kroger anyway. We spent money there so the whole trip cost us $$$.

Good Morning All. Partly cloudy and 36° here this morning, winter has finally arrived with a high today only in the nid-40's and tonight's low in the upper teens. Tomorrow we return to 61°/30° and Monday is a repeat of today although not as cold overnight. Tuesday brings back normal conditions for a few more days. Still no precipitation in the forecast. Last measurable rain was in October!

Managed to get a little time outdoors yesterday, cleaning up brush and small broken branches in the woodsy part of the estate. Mostly too small to use as firewood and I already have enough kindling for 2-3 years. So into the brush pile for an eventual bonfire sometime after we get some rain. I always notify the local VFD when I do it and sometimes they come on out for some brush fire practice. Hotspot practice, they don't extinguish my fire! Today is going to be too raw for any kind of extended chores outside. I'll miss that since I like it. I guess that I could always bundle up like you northerners do, but this cold usually doesn't last long...except the "deep freeze of '21", which did. Not expecting anything like that this year.

Nothing special planned for today. I do plan on making a batch of croutons for salads this morning, clear all of the leftover bread from the freezer. I used to make bread every winter, but stopped a few years ago when I had to reduce carbs for various health reasons. Still generate some odd slices since my wife still buys it. And I'll have to resume the wintertime exercise routine of bringing in firewood today. At least I won't be trudging through snow.

Of course I made a visit out to the train shed yesterday. Still looking for the postal figures that I know exist somewhere, but not on my figure box. You may recall that I keep a stash of unpainted figures next to the workbench and dab some with paint whenever I am painting something else. Or whenever I just feel like painting them. I keep the completed ones in a compartmentalized hobby box for future use. View attachment 254603
I'm a little ahead right now.
i also added pennies to the two containers that I purchased this week. I add 14¢ to all 40' containers to provide some weight to the intermodal well cars. Even though these two will be used initially for the chassis's that I also purchased, they'll be ready for rotation in to and out of the cars.

Since I only have one available tractor right now, the other will be parked in the TOFC yard on the outskirts of Ft. Wish. I do have a TOFC facility but no container facility on my layout. Intermodal containers are only run as expedited freights from staging to staging to interrupt local switching operations.

Michael - Since I have stubbornly stuck with Win10, I no longer get automatic updates, so I determine when to reboot. I suppose that I will eventually go to Win11 and use a Classic Shell like I use for Win10 right now!
David (Marlin) - I used to use the chimney brush that I shoved up and down, for nearly 40 years. When I stopped going up on the roof, I paid chimney sweeps to do it for me. The last one that I used in 2022, had a flexible brush and some 3' flexible rods that snapped together, and connected with a portable drill to provide rotation. It was all done from inside. Once I saw that, I purchased my own kit for under $40 and have done it on my own ever since. The kit came with rods, brush, an extra brush and a reusable plastic sheet for sealing the opening. I use my 5-gallon shop-vac to remove the creosote after sweeping. The professional sweeps cost me $200 per visit, so I saved money on my first use!
Mikey -

I resemble that! And I tend to forget what the original chore was!
Jim - I watch birds as well. Maybe ID the bird that you posted so we don't have to look it up.
Patrick - Glad that it's you enjoying the snow and not me!

Controversial rocker Kid Rock is 55 today.

Everyone have a good Saturday and stay safe.
Those pennies may be worth something in the future. I saw an ad the other day where some pawn shop was paying 2 cents for every one penny......and yes, you had to sell pennies in amounts where the broker paid in multiples of 10 cents ( a solid dime ). 🤑🤑

Sounds like a typical day for me. If I don't have some disappointment of some kind each day, I start feeling a little uneasy.
There was a nice Tom Thumb store near where I lived in Dallas. I do miss that convenience.

Well, howdy there internet peeps, and those with circuitry of one sort or another.

It's Troy again.

Loving that I've gotten my circadian rhythm to mostly get up around 5:30a. Sometimes. Occasionally. Today was one of them.

Thanks to all who chimed in on my firearms questions. I've altered book 1. Had to take a brand name out and substitute "pistol" or "holster".

Lesson learned for writing. Someone always knows more than me and the AI combined. Keep it generic so the reader can fill in the blanks.

That's how today is going. I did one of those minor tweeks to the back. Felt a muscle in the lower left whine a little, but was still mobile enough to unload the car at the game store.

There was no way to ice it at that location, and it didn't feel bad. But it's protesting now. So the heating pad and I are best buddies this morning to get it to relax.
That guy must be part Vulcan.............check those ears. 😄😄😄

That's often best if the firearms details don't contribute to the story and if it's not something historical. I like Clancy style books but Clancy often got obsessed with irrelevant details and repeated long descriptions, which became tedious.

I just had an awesome experience ording from Home Depot on-line. I ordered a new space heater, some contact cleaner, and a bottle of Loc-Tite CA. All three of these items said "Delivery Today" and "Free". Imagine my surprise when I see a $35 delivery fee on my invoice.

I sat and simmered about 15 minutes with this before I contacted Customer Service. I explained what I saw before and after checkout and told CS I was not happy about being fooled into paying a delivery charge after being told it was free.

He gave me a $35 credit immediately on my HD card. I refreshed the order page with the invoice, and there it was.

That made me very happy, and satisfied. Maybe CS really isn't dead after all, and sometimes the squeaky wheel does get the grease!

HD customer service is very good from our experience.

We bought a stove and dishwasher online and paid $50.00 per for haul away of the old units. When they were delivered the delivery company (third party not HD) wanted our HD card for $100 since it was not on their invoice for some reason. I called customer service and they took care of it instantly and said they would straighten it out with the delivery company.
