Well, we got the call a bit over an hour ago that the wife's older brother passed due to complications from Parkinson's. When the wife called me at noon, telling me he was moaning every time he was moved, I knew it wasn't going to be long. Same type of symptoms dad had before he passed.
So sorry for your family's loss Patrick. We lost my brother in law 12/18 under the same circumstances.

Good morning! It's 23°F in Tipton.

Good Morning All. Clear and 35°, still hitting the lower 60's for 3 more days.

Yesterday's weekly grocery trek went mostly as planned, a last minute request to go to the UPS store ended up being aborted because the line was too long. I didn't make that decision...I would have waited. Grocery store parking lot was sparse, but it seemed that every customer in the store was in the Produce department at the same time that we were in it! Include in that crowd, 3 of those employees who shop for the pick up orders. Each one has 12 customer buckets on their buggies.
After lunch there was the ever-increasing honey do list. I also did some rare maintenance on the door of the wood-burning heater. The door wasn't sealing properly and air was able to rush in uncontrolled, which allowed the stove surface temperature to reach 750° about an hour after fresh wood was added. We usually run it at 350° for comparison. While it was fixed by tightening a Philips-head screw, I ordered a new door seal from Amazon after examining the old one. First replacement part in 44 years of use if I don't count the chimney caps, which technically aren't part of the heater.

Since it's going to be a nice day today, I plan to resume chainsawing downed tree branches. There's no real hurry, I just want to get that type of exercise, besides the urge to just get more yard reclaimed. About 70% of what remains is in the "back-40" woodlot. Just a small amount in the front or side yards.

I really got into the layout cleaning yesterday out in the train shed. I removed and cleaned 7 or 8 structures. Five of them are just temporarily occupying a blank space along the front, that I just haven't developed yet. Only one of the 5 will end up there in the future, the others are just on display until I develop the neighborhood that's planned for another large unfinished area. There are two industrial switching spots across the tracks.

The space is 32" long and between 5.5" and 6.5" wide. It's bound on the layout north by a switch tower, just out of view to the right in the first picture.

On the south, it is bordered by Augie's Ag Sales, a structure that I got from Chet's Logan Valley RR.

While it's not officially "planted", it's definitely going there.

Troy - The Model Railroader articles regarding Rod Stewart's layout move are interesting. One thing that I got out of the two articles is that if you have the money, the sky's the limit!
Best wishes on the back recovery.
Mike - It would be really nice if you northerners would lasso that Arctic Vortex and steer it east instead of in our direction. Local weather guys on TV still don't know if it will hit us, or when, or for how long! I think that it will hit, but it's severity might be muted a bit. I hope!
Patrick - Condolences and prayers on the passing of your BIL.

Everyone have a fabulous Friday.

Good morning from chilled So Central Wisconsin where it is 16f degrees heading to 20! No snow on the ground, but maybe Monday

The guest bedroom has been put back to its normal everyday life! One of 2 beds in there is a Queen Murphy bed and Wednesday when I went to return it to the upright position it was locked in place. I have fixed this after reading the manual.

Terry got an email from the landscaping company that in the off season also installs the outdoor Christmas lights. They have us down for 1/6 per our request. It was a 3 year present from the daughter and SIL a few years ago. After the 3 seasons were finished my brother now gifts it to us. I am not so lazy I need a service but they can climb where I will not go and it’s a gift!

All remaining bins for Christmas are in position! I started at 5 this morning. After Terry wakes, coffees then says go away I will return only to move them back downstairs. I feel a visit to the LHS which for some reason was closed Wednesday after dropping my sister at the airport. After I went in to help my sister check in, made sure the wheel chair and attendant was there for her, gave a tip and the hug good bye Terry and I headed to the LHS. She dropped me at the curb and said she’ll wait there in the car but was also chuckling to herself. As I got back into the car maybe a minute later she was fully in laugh mode. I completely forgot it was New Years Day, yep closed!

Circuit breakers (the final 2), Walthers and Rapido coil cars, Rapido and Atlas Center beam flat cars, plus 3 hard to find Arrowhead gondolas have been set aside for me. The only other car I need to finish out the roster is just 3 more 72’ reefer cars. My pusher in rural Missouri has 5 BLMA reefers (I’d take the 5 and sell 2) but he has not budged on the price for the past year, neither will I. While those would finish up the roster I’d be lying to myself if I truly believe these are the last cars I’d buy this year!

2 buddies are heading to Hiawatha and Walthers this morning. I am not going. The goal is the Walthers mainline series of gondolas, flat cars and bulkheads. The cars are on sale for about $16 each. I’ve already agreed that I will strip them down. One of the guys will paint them, I will decal them and the other will build loads for them. They are building a steel mill for the club they belong to. I thought paper mills were expensive but not compared to a decent sized steel mill! 3 blast furnaces with minimal details is $175 each on ebay. They are creating a composite of mills from the Chicago/Gary area that also had Hullets in the era of 1960’s to 70’s! They have been collecting kits for maybe 2 years. Now they are ready to build in a 24” x 24’ space or 6 modules!

I feel good about modeling again

Enjoy the day

Good morning all!

Currently 20F going up to around 24F. Had some light snow yesterday with less than an inch of accumulation. Not the 3 or so inches the advisory said we were to receive. Its really not enough to clear the driveway. I did clear the sidewalk for the mailman and if someone should come to the door. Looks like the winter storm that's going to march across the middle of the country is going to stay south of us. As of now they are not predicting any snow for our area. Im fine with that. We will get in on the cold that's going to drop down.

On the layout front I did run a train yesterday. I really haven't felt much like doing any work on it for a while now. I tried last night and didn't accomplish much other than moving some accumulated stuff around. Its a shame, because I have had a great opportunity over the last couple of weeks to spend a lot of time, but haven't been feeling it.

Not much else going on today. Got most everything done yesterday.

Have a safe day everyone!

Afternoon all,

I was able to get on to read posts this morning, but not respond. Wife is meeting with siblings virtually to plan out what they're doing with their brother. He'd been living with a lady and her family for the past 20+ years and she doesn't quite know what she wants to do, nor does she want to upset the proverbial apple cart.

Was 20° this morning and they've already called for a winter storm watch until Sunday afternoon. Still going to work tomorrow, gotta get those servers updated.

Thanks all for the condolences.

Good Afternoon, all! A very overcast day here in H-Town, about 62 degrees. Had a early Dr. appointment with labs. Now we wait for the results. I was down 14 lbs. from last visit and BP was good, 122/72.
I had seen a few videos on Wunderland but not this one. I didn't realize just how big the airport was, and how the cars recharge themselves.

STAY SAFE
LATER

Well, howdy there internet peeps and those waiting on snow or ice or other weather.

It's Troy again
Condolences to Patrick and his family.

I got rolling right after my last post finishing the edit/revamp on the latest book. It went off to the editor for her pass #2 on it.

Then I locked and loaded a newsletter to go to my readers tomorrow. And got the sign up list out to the beta readers to read the book next week and tell me where I screwed up.

And the Middle Aged Dad Jam band just released a new vid:

Patrick: Condolences on the passing of the BIL.

Its somewhat cloudy. It was about 40F when I rolled out of bed. My first day back to work though I've mostly ben doing other things today. It's 53F per the watch at 3:30pm. It's supposed to get crappy a day or two starting Sunday I believe, and then a week of mostly or partly cloudy with highs from 37-43F during the day.

Lots of stuff on the house has been done. I don't have pics of everything.

We got about 1/2 the porch done with the stone decking from Tanzite. My nephew in law was down and helped me about 3 1/2 days and my nephew (his brother in law) came one day on New Years Day to help as well. Some of the weather was crappy so we didn't want to be outside so the porch didnb't get finished. We tried to finish yesterday but had an issue cutting an end piece to go around a post and the saw we wanted had a broken blade so that didn't get finished. We also didn't finish the stair handrail where I had broken a bolt. We did get it out and decided to JB weld steel reinforced putty fill the oversized holes etc and re-drill it to see if that would work. But we never got back to it.

We did get the electric fireplace installed in the main room and also the smaller one on the porch sun room (no pic of that). All the fans were installed. We did some painting, and got almost all the remaining plugs and switches installed. Two outlets up high in windows (like 15' off the floor windows) were going to be done but we ran out of time. QWe got ready to install the kitchen hood and I'll finish that. Also got a medicne cabinet installed. I cut out all the vanity back splashes and test fit them and am now in the middle of finishing them. The pic shows the untreated wood test fit so we can see what it looks like. Probably a lot of other small things were finished.

We alst tested the tub in the "Japanese Bath". There is a small leak on the drain -- intermittent drips in the basement -- I've notified the plumber and they'll come check it out. The dris were not enough that it will keep me from showing others who ask about how it works :). I need to read the manual on it though for what the different buttons are.

we also finished the drawers and doors on the pantry sink and one of the cabinets in the master bath.

I also received a mug from a friend on the JNS forum. His modeling club which specializes in Japanese rail is located in DC and they have a mug they had made. He sent me one. This pic shows one side -- the other side is just the club's logo.
