This past saturday i made it to Monroeville (by Pittsburgh), for a large train show. One of more interesting items, but that price🤔

Very nicely weathered C39-8, which i consider one of absolutely coolest diesels on American rails. On the way back i decided to take US30 to Latrobe to check out the old ex. Penn Central (ex. Pennsylvania Railroad) box car.

This car has been sitting on what originally was the old Main Line going through Greensburg. Number of the box car is 151811. Driving through Altoona right alongside Juniata shops, saw "Hi hood" SD40-2;

Coupled to it was even more interesting and rare:

SD40, the first one ever bought by Norfolk and Western.

From what i read, this SD40 was supposed to be restored into original Norfolk and Western colors. But i'm not sure what the actual plans are.

I wish you well Chad, with everything.

I know what it is like to see our children leave home, one at a time. My wife and I are now "empty nesters" as all three of our children are doing well with homes and families of their own. I miss their laughter most of all. I even miss playing referee occasionally.

May God be with you and your family always.

Thanks Louis. Wish me well tomorrow when we actually drop him off...

We're not quite empty nesters but within probably 5 years willbe as our daughter is about to turn 16...

Good morning from a deeply snow covered So Central Wisconsin. My ruler in the driveway showed 14” but offically the TV station says we got 9”. There was no blowing or drifting of the heavy wet white stuff. But with winds now gusting tonight into the 30mph range that may happen yet

The mail delivery person made it to the mailbox and front porch as did Amazon. Some of the items received I just posted in the Mail Call RPO thread.

Morris the new driver for the UP linemen truck made it through his 1st surgical procedure. Something his identical twin Boris did not and reported yesterday.

I used a razor saw instead of the too thick Zona saw I tried the other day

Morris will be getting some more surgeries today as he is still a bit thick to fit in the seat of the truck. I believe the belt sander maybe in action IF I can figure a way not to hurt myself as we perform the liposuction procedures

Time for bed…

Good morning. It's mostly clear and 54.
During our heavy weather yesterday, a leak has shown itself in the trailer. The floor in one end of the dining room slideout is very wet, and I have fans blowing on it to help dry it out. I looked at points of ingress, and I think it may have just been the quantity and delivery of rain that caused it. We had 70mph straight-line winds blowing in the direction I found the water. I'll climb on the roof and check it Sunday, my first day I can do that.

Good afternoon all. The rain has returned. Enough said!

Children leaving the nest.
When ours did it was a few years of two of us 'rattling around' the house. Now grandchildren visit most days.

How I met Dawn

How strange life can be. I had travelled down by train to Inverness from the town of Wick (far north Scotland). I was in no hurry to return home. I left the railway station to have a look around Inverness. I had been there a number of times; a lovely city imo. Standing outside the station, should I go left into town or right, down to the river?

Meanwhile (as Dawn tells me), Dawn was a Children's Nanny, looking after children whilst their parents worked. The children were now older and she was released from her job. She could have gone home by bus, but she liked to walk. Her route was not by passing the station. Seeing a printed poster stuck on a piece of wood that was fastened to a lamp post, Dawn read it. TO THE WORLD YOU ARE SOMEONE. TO SOMEONE YOU ARE THEIR WORLD.

To Dawn it looked as if the poster was pointing towards the station, and she headed that direction. Why? As she says. "Why not?" She was in no hurry to go home. Nearing the station she saw someone who looked 'lost' and asked if she could help.

LOST. I wasn't lost. "Wow. What an attractive girl."

To this day, Dawn says seeing the poster she was sent (the direction to the station) to look after me, (because I was lost).

Good morning from Wisconsin. It doesn’t look like any additional snow fell since midnight and none is predicted during the next 12 hours. The temperature now is 30f degrees but feels like 20. The gusting winds (30+ mph) we were having at bedtime are diminished to 8 mph. High today with no sunshine is going to be 31.

I found 2 windows in the house that had drafts last night and one additional one where the seal between the glass is broken as there is moisture between the panes of glass. Willie, it’s bringing back memories of the early LowE/argon gas days! I will call the contractor after 8AM as the house is still within the warranty period as is the glass with its limited one.

Today now includes a grocery run for a newly planned Packer party this weekend. We have plenty of hard booze but no beer. Terry needs beer for soaking the brats in and for the party to drink. Party of 14 (as of now) plus the 2 hosts (Terry and me). Basically a tail gate party that I have not prepared since my brother and I dropped the suite at Packer games in 2018. Brats, jerk shrimp, regular grilled shrimp, strips of beef tenderloin and barbecued ribs. The homemade buns are out as I will buy them! I will get 20#s of potatoes cut them up tomorrow in preparation. Veggies get grilled so I will prep those Friday. I actually had a list of things to do, how to prepare and in what order. Digging through my stuff yesterday it turns out the list was moved onto Terry’s computer files on the server. We had discussed at Christmas that we were cutting the open house parties down to just Summertime. I was told this is not a “open” party, these are invited Packer fans!

I watched a very undermanned Chicago BlackHawk team lose 1-2 to the Edmonton Oilers last night. It was a game the Hawks should have won but the Oilers have 2 of the best offensive players in the NHL and it showed. The Hawks until yesterday were 9 guys injured from the opening night roster. Last night 2 bit players came back but the Chicago team is a walking injury list. Looks like the Hawks will get a top 3 (lottery) pick in the 2024 draft

The main level of the house is scheduled for vacuuming on Wednesdays and that’s my job. 85% of the lower level is now handled daily by my Romba that the son says I need to add a model of a diesel on top as it rides around. The Romba makes quick time downstairs as it’s unimpeded except in the TV monitor area that has risers where the seating is. The other spot is my shop, no Romba allowed. The Shark and I will handle those 2 areas.

Lots to do today including in the train room

Cool!

Terry and I met in class at Marquette. But before that I saw her walking the halls between or after a class and just “knew“ I had to meet her. It worked out in class as the Professor partnered everyone up in a random draw. That was September, she dropped her boyfriend in early October, we were study partners and finally at Halloween I asked her out. We attended a Halloween party and shared a table with what turned out to be the ex-boyfriend. When I said later then night why didn’t you say something, she said no big deal I‘m with you, he’s in the past. Already hooked that just planted the hook deeper. That was 10/1972 and except for 6 weeks of my stupidity we have been together ever since.

Good Morning All. Clear and 34°. Still have wind about 10 mph, but it's out of the south today and it will warm up to the mid-60's later on. Forecast still has single digit lows for Monday and Tuesday mornings. I can just imagine what some of you others up north will see.

No issues yesterday with the dental hygienist, that's always good news. Other than that I mostly did some indoor chores and carried in firewood. Wife did finally start the process of removing ornaments from the Christmas tree, so I will likely remove the lights today and take it down. Trip to the attic will be Friday since tomorrow is weekly grocery trek. I'll take advantage of the warmer temperatures today by preemptively removing ashes/embers from the wood stove once again. Tools used are a shovel end with no handle, heavy cotton gloves and a galvanized 8-gallon pail with lid. Since there will be embers in there and the stove will be hot, 250° or above; I will also use an old scarred sweatshirt to protect my arms. No matter how careful one tries to be, second degree burns are inevitable without the sweatshirt. Don't bother asking how I know this.

I was late getting out to the train shed yesterday, so I mainly inspected and cleaned freight cars. I ran the last of the trains that were moved from the staging yard back in place. I surprisingly found another freight car that still had a pair of McHenry couplers on it and changed them out to Kadee $148's. For me, that was a horrible decision made in the late 90's, but at the time all new freight cars still had horn-hook couplers and Kadees were in short supply at the LHS's near me. It took about 4 years for them to begin to fail. This pair still operated mainly because the car was parked at an industry for many years without being moved. With the freights being moved back into staging, I can continue with the quarterly cleaning project and hopefully return to the cemetery build. The wooden rail fence is next as I have gotten all of the posts and rails cut and ready for assembly.
I don't really have any layout or train pictures to post today, so let's look at a few that I had taken of some neighborhood wildlife in 2008.
The owl who was just as surprised as I was while he was snacking on a rat seen in it's claws.

Tom O -
Something kept getting repeated about me getting up there in age and I shouldn’t be out there moving snow.
Same here!;) Oh! Wait. I only have to move it from the porch, just a 2'x8' one at that. Although I did have to deal with this in 2008.

Sherrel - Get well soon and the same for Kate and the rest of the family.
Curt - I have gotten used to the expense of this hobby, but fortunately I bought all 800 freight cars years ago and stopped in 2014. While I have still bought diesels recently from ScaleTrains, I really have all that I need...unless they come out with something that I can't pass up. I am still filling in with vehicles which I may never get enough.
Chad - I may have missed it, but when do you hope to move into the new house?
Terry - Good luck with the leak.

Today is model railroader Rod Stewart's 79th birthday.
Enjoy the day today if you're not dealing with snow.

Morning all,

25° and clear going for a high of 43° later. About the same for tomorrow and then the bottom drops out. Lows over the weekend below 0°, high of about 20° through next week. Some snow predicted tomorrow night into Friday morning.

Things I missed:

ctclibby: Sorry to hear about your loss.

Willie: Belated Happy Birthday!

Kids\grandkids are after us to get a dog. They think we need one. While it would be nice, I don't miss having to clean up the backyard each week, nor the other issues. We have had dogs since we were first married, but since the kids took them with them as they moved out, I don't miss them. Besides, I don't have to find someplace to board them if we want to go someplace.

Local train show coming up in a few weeks. It will be the first one in a long time I won't be going to. I have way too much stuff in the basement I haven't touched in a while. Still figuring out the ballasting. I changed the tools I used, but still get clumps.

So, now that the 1/87 scale Oxford 1966 GTO is available, will anyone replicate this image on their HO scale layout?

Quote from the San Antonio Light, Thursday April 6, 1967:
Possibly the latest in locomotive hood ornaments is a new Pontiac GTO. At the Missouri Pacific yards, Medina and W. Commerce, this mishap occurred when the switch engine came in contact with an open-type freight car carrying autos. The top-level row of autos had been readied for unloading when it rolled onto the switch engine. The unloading device, which can be adjusted to various levels on the freight car, simplified the chore of getting the undamaged auto off its perch.

Morning from further West than PATRICK!
Another cold day for us desert dwellers - 33 blistering degrees - looking for 61 with sunny and breezy!

The family has "mostly" recovered. Thanks for those who commented! Still some "sniffles" remaining, but those should clear today. Haven't seen anything hit so fast in my life? Kate came home from her ROME trip, and within 8 hours, both the daughter and myself started getting sore throats and sinus headaches - by morning we were all - like - flat on our backs.

I made a run to the Walmart pickup area Monday night to gather milk, cereal, eggs, and bread so the kids, and us, would have something for breakfast. I have another larger order to pick up this morning.
I curse Bidenomics every time I go to the store as prices are still much higher than PRIOR YEARS before - inflation is the politicians friend as tax revenue goes up - while hurting those on fixed pensions and SS.

I have a story, but it will have to wait. I'm being paged!
