Speaking of getting things done.

I have not kept up on all the things I need to do. My health has been mostly stable, but my energy and stamina are low.

I'm seriously considering not having our annual 4th of July party. I just don't know how I can do it. Not to mention the doctors advised me two years ago to avoid being in the heat for more than two hours. Even less if the heat is bothering me. Last year was very taxing on me. It took weeks for me to recover.

I've always had a cookout on the fourth for family. After my sister Theresa passed away, I extended the party to everyone and anyone we knew. It has grown to over one hundred people. It grew from hamburgers and hotdogs to an all-you-can-eat crab feast. With pork barbeque, a whole smoked turkey, smoked chicken breast, ham, more than a half-dozen different smoked sausages and more. We also have well over a dozen side dishes and foods for diabetics.

We start serving at noon. We finish well after sundown when the kids roast marshmallows and set off fireworks. With adult supervision of course.

The biggest issue is my limitations due to my health. I struggle to steam bushels of crabs all day and I don't trust anyone else to do it. The last time I let someone else steam the crabs was a disaster and I had to take over. Not only did they burn the crabs. They burned through the steamer pot because they did not rinse it out after each batch of crabs! It's not rocket science, but you need to watch the time and clean the pot after every batch. Blue crab meat is delicate. It must be steamed perfectly. Not to mention a bushel of crabs now costs $300-$400.

The crabs are the easy part. Preparation, setup and clean up are the hard parts. My wife and my son do most of the work during the party. I am a terrible host. My son takes care of the open bar and other drinks. My wife handles the gas grill. They both make rounds asking if anyone needs or wants anything. My way "help yourself to anything you want" :)

I can't pile more onto my wife Angela and my kids don't pick up much slack. Only weeks before my sister Cathie passed away, I was telling her "Angela is like the Energizer Bunny". Cathie was quick to sternly say "no she is not!" Cathie was right, Angela doesn't run on batteries, she is only human, and she is not getting any younger.

I expanded the party for my mom and my sister, Cathie. I hoped it might take their mind off losing my sister Theresa. Theresa was born on the fourth of July. I would have stopped having the party after the doctors advised me about the heat. I only kept going because my mom and my sister Cathie looked forward to it and enjoyed it so much. Now I have lost all three of them.

:D The saga of the laptop sleeve continues:

The Postal Service has identified a problem with the processing of this item at 4:56 pm on January 9, 2023 in YBOR CITY FL DISTRIBUTION CENTER. The local facility has been alerted and is taking steps to correct the problem.

I bought some storage boxes for the extra rolling stock that I have around the layout, that I had to keep moving, and you know how easy it is to knock one over and damage it.

Boxes were sent by courier on the 4th and arrived yesterday, but according to the courier company tracking system (Evri, used to be Hermes) and I've just checked, they're still in transit, maybe I'm getting a freebie, doubt it tho'.:D

Looks like the Dawgs from Georgia are putting a whipping on TCU. 38-7 GA at Halftime.
I am a fairly avid fan of college football, but with 2 minutes to go in the 3rd quarter, Ga leads TCU 52 to 7.
My old neighbor and buddy/classmate "Mattress Mack", bet $3.13 million on TCU. Seems that he's kissing that good bye today.

"Over one hundred people"? Maybe it's time to cut back. I know that will be hard to do. Folks will show up just out of habit.

Well howdy there internet peoples, and those with burned-through crab pots

It's Troy again.

Louis... time to pass the baton. Tell someone else they can host. You'll bring a lawn chair, sunscreen, and a healthy appetite. And, do NOT loan out your crab pot.

As for California rains, I had to read this essay when I was working on my masters in journalism. John McFee words the words better than anyone. And, that essay is a lesson on California and rain...

But, today, I wanted to talk about print fails.

I finally got my 3d pinter settings dialed in, so I went and changed the size of my supports that connect the models to the build plate.

And I got half-people

The build plate is what the models are connected to. It rises up and down into the vat of liquid resin. The vat has a clear bottom. UV light is projected through the vat, and a "layer" is burned, hardening the resin. Build plate goes up to pop that layer off the vat bottom. So there has to be a more secure connection to the metal build plate than the residual tug of the plastic film in the bottom of the resin vat.

And I made the supports too thin. The people popped off and were flopping about. Any new layers just welded themselves to the bottom of the vat. When that happens, there's a chance of the vat ending up like Louis's crab pot that one year he let someone else cook.

So, right before bedtime, I discovered the latest mess. Takes about half an hour to clear all of that. Prying the burned-in bits takes finesse and a rubber spatula.

Then I opened the software. Buffed up the supports, and hit print.

This morning, I found a good print. This shows how the models and supports hang together when I do my part correctly.

I venture to say that son in law must have enjoyed being at the game last evening. After the way that it turned out - just as well that he did not ask me to go with him. The Spousal Unit and I gave up watching during the third quarter - we both felt bad for TCU - been a long time since seeing a blowout like that in my megar sports world.

I found this article while "scratching" around - I do npot know how as I can't stand CNN!

A smattering of rain seems to be coming down at the moment. I have not had my first "cup of joe" so I will head for the diner ...FLO, make me a fresh pot please .. need it this AM.
I'll be there in a little while?

Good morning from a mildly weathered climate changed So. Central Wisconsin. It’s 29f degrees heading to 39 but it’s densely foggy. I cannot see the mailbox from the house, maybe 60’ away. This is January where the weather app says the normal high today is 10f degrees.

I fixed up a storage space yesterday and put away nicely all the seasonal bins. I may have had the TV on for 10 minutes yesterday, the music in the house is just so much more relaxing. The football game last night might have been 1 minute of the TV time. I just had no interest and the score was already lopsided in the 2 quarter.

Prima donna, Aaron Rodgers has started it again. What’s he going to do. Well, he’ll take some psychedelics, do something with his 26 year old girlfriend, vacation with his boys and decide in March. PLEASE GO, let the Pack rebuild and get on with it. Don’t let the door hit you on your way out. Way over due IMO by 7 years when he undercut McCarthy’s ability to coach the team. Should have traded him then. My prediction, he doesn’t blow off the 53 million in his contract and returns because the “fire” is still burning. Don’t we have fire extinguishers🧯in GB?

I have a personal weathering project I have not touched since Saturday to complete. Maybe…

enjoy the day

I buy a few cartons and donate the cookies to sober houses. For those who may not know, sober houses offer a safe place for people to live for 6 months to a few years, while they get their feet back on the ground from addiction.

Most residents have already been through an intensive 30-day in-patient stay at a rehab center. The people who show promise are offered a spot in a sober living house where they can have a place to live without being around all the temptations of the real world. Otherwise, they go back to the same toxic environment that made them use in the first place.

One cup down. Fire started in the wood stove. Going to pick up more wood today, it's free in large box form the pallet repair shop.
When do model trains stop breaking down. I'm getting tired of always fixing something. Today a blue box Athearn diesel is making grinding noises.

Good Morning All. Clear skies and 44°. Expected high today in the 80's, a bit warm for January. A bit cooler this coming weekend but otherwise tolerable.

Went without water for about an hour yesterday, while the local water company fixed a broken pipe up the hill at the neighboring house 1/4 mile up the road. They had to turn it off for five of us on that leg of their system. It was apparently pretty severe, as the gravel road between the leak and my house was saturated almost all of the way.
Another unplanned day today, so anything might happen. Sorta planning some tree pruning but nothing set in stone. Wife may or may not go to town, which she planned to do yesterday. I may or may not go.

Thanks for the many reactions and comments regarding the scenes posted yesterday.

Out in the train shed yesterday, I started assembling the grain elevator for the Ethanol refinery. These silos took some time to get everything lined up correctly, and even more time inserting my hands inside to apply glue; but in the end everything worked out OK.

I then turned my attention to the headhouse, painting all of the windows and doors, and then installing glass in the windows.

I'll pick up today where I left off.

Tom O - Interesting about the homeless pickets outside Ruth Chris's. Right or wrong, most of the patrons probably consider them a nuisance.
Over 50 years ago, while I was going to college, I worked at a place called Steak & Ale. We dumped all of our food remains into 55 gallon plastic barrels and after we closed, a nearby pig farmer came and changed them out, and took them to feed to his hogs. I began to notice a homeless man coming by before the farmer came by and rifle through the barrels and pick out half-eaten baked potatoes and steak. So I started putting some of the choice morsels into a separate box and leaving it on top, so it wasn't mixed in with all of the salads and other debris. I showed a trusted fellow employee what I was doing so he could do it on my days off, and after I left the job. Incidentally, every 6-8 weeks, the farmer would bring us a box with discarded silverware that he had retrieved.
Dave (PV) - Never loaded a tractor on a flatcar, just observed them going by and once watched them being unloaded. Thanks for commenting though.
Joe - Glad to read that the CT scan went well. I hope that the results are favorable, or at least identify an easily fixed situation.

A couple more musical birthday's today, two who are still entertaining us. Pat Benatar is 70 years old today, and fellow railroad modeler Rod Stewart is 78.
Everyone have a wonderful day.

I didn't read the article -- just the headline. But it says this low since Russia invaded. That is very possible as the "fear" portion of the market has dissipated and the invasion wasn'tuntil the end of February, which is the last gasp of Winter anyway. And those world market prices take a while to trickle back to "street consumer" prices -- especially in states where utility pricing is regulated.

It was an air exchange system. House insulation "exceedd" R-21 walls, R 30 ceiling, but there were obvious holes that were hard to detect. That was 1979. Sudden cold snap over Christmas 1984, caused frozen pipes in kitchen and laundry/furnace room. Electric back-up couldn't handle cold. Neighbor, a HVAC guy replaced his with an oil system. (No gas). No intention of ever considering one again.

Yeah, leaky house and air exchange -- heat pump is not a magic bullet. Maybe in New Construction where they can engineer it in from the beginning and make the house a bit more insulated and tight (which means you get a mechanical ventilation system) there would be benefit.

Afternoon All,

Started out with a couple chores the went through the train room wrapping up buildings that I'll never use. I've offered them to my MRR friends locally and if they don't want any, I'll donate them to a MRR club I was a member of for years. Tomorrow, I have to do some vent hose modification to the dryer (MOH driven of course). It's some kit she got on Amazon.

TruckDad- I hope all of the CA folks remain safe from the weather.

Louis- Your health is more important than a BBQ. My 2 cents are just do something with the family if you're up to it. It sounds like your angel needs a break also. Your friends will understand, if they don't then they're not a real friend.

Jeff- I usually just give a donation as I've been both a BSA Scoutmaster and an Assistant Girl Scout Leader (MOH was the leader).

Christian- Thats great news.

I hope everyone has a good night.
