Chad- Very impressive. How did you acquire all the ability to do what you're doing?

Not sure what you are asking. It's kind of a "put one step in front of another" and "two steps forward and one step back" as you make mistakes. I did take a one-day ICF installer class sponsored by the manufacturer of my blocks... And have had people show me things or suggest things. And all the framing and other things were done by others. And some must be common sense. I don't really know...

Chad - That basement doesn't look like much has been done with it during my absence. Weather?

Chet -- not sure what the time span is your're referring to, but a lot has been accomplished in the last 3-4 weeks. From end of November to mid January not a lot was done as there was a ton of snow and we were also out of town for 3 1/2 weeks in Japan, though the excavator dude kept working and did a lot more dirt hauling -- too much I fear.

We got back from Japan on Jan 4 and the first week or 10 days was spent clearing snow (and water) from off the top of the subfloor -- a few times as it kept snowing.

Since mid January we've gotten the garage slab poured (last Friday) over the pre-cast slabs that were put in place mid or second half of November, and we've also gotten several layers of foam in most places put in place with rebar and other inserts and pieces for most of the house (except parts of the garage where we were waiting for the slab to be poured).

The whole basement (below what you see in the pics above) has been framed in except one false wall against an ICF wall (we need it for an electric fireplace insert) and two partition walls under the garage which they were waiting for the pour above it to happen). The pics above show the main floor subfloor that is on all the structural walls, beams, and joists that were done back in October.

Well, howdy there internet peeps, and those about to consume eggs with your bacon...

It's Troy again...

Not much to report. About the only thing interesting is that I fired up the kamado grill, smoked some Italian sausages for lunch, and then cooked the last two steaks from the freezer. Need to head to Costco again soon, but I probably won't get more steaks until the weather breaks enough to start using the grills more regularly.

Dinner table conversation turned to the cost of eggs. Unless they're in batter (including french toast, brownies, cookies, et al) I don't eat eggs. Texture, odour, and taste all collide in negative ways for me.

But, wife brought it up that it's not just the Avian flu (laying hen flocks hardest hit) ... it's really "economic energy policies". Love my wife but she's stuck in some far fringy political podcasts.

So, I put on my journalist hat and started digging. Despite growing up in rural communities, and covering them on numerous small town papers, I'm not an expert on the corporate egg industry. If you don't have your own hens, nor have ready access via a neighbor... you're probably getting your eggs from a company supplier/corporate farm industry giant like Cal-Maine.

Their profits statements (I'm far from an expert in this area) look pretty darn solid for this year. Nice increase over years past. Some additional expenses, but they don't seem to have a major impact on price when compared to the Profit and Revenue. Perhaps someone more versed in P&L/stocks can take a look?

Also, I discovered that eggs actually have a futures market... hmmmm... That looks like it's been affecting the market price as well... again, I'm no expert, so I'll attach the chart. Feel free to help me understand how this has been driving the price of those Chicken Butt Missiles.

I would expect a surge in futures leading into the holiday cookies period around Dec, but that spike is interesting. Especially

eggs futures.png

My conclusion: Pending further enlightenment... Eggs are complicated, and too many factors are colliding to point a political finger in any sure direction like the talking heads keep trying to do. Like Mambo No. 5... A little bit of Rita, Monica... errrrr... energy, corporate profiteering, futures profiteering, high demand, disease-infused shortages... and some Sandra and Jessica

Jump up and down and move it all around
Shake your head to the sound, put your hand on the ground

Did I miss anything?

Good morning from So. Central Wisconsin. I am not sure Mother Nature has decided what to do today. At 3AM I woke because the rain was pounding against the bedroom windows. I looked at the phone weather app and it was 35f degrees. Now 4 hours later it is drizzling at 34 degrees. The NWS warning still says snow, 3-6” but now between 10AM and 3PM, but the lowest temperature predicted Is 34. So, we shall see what we actually get.

We got out for a ride yesterday, a few stops including Hiawatha Hobbies in Pewaukee, Wi. just west of Milwaukee. Had a great brunch, purchased a big kite for the daughter’s family and had a bowl of ice cream,

rum raisin for me in 46f degree temperatures, no wind. I was unaware that a picture was taken till I saw it posted by the beloved one! One must concentrate while eating good ice cream. Overall a good day.

Today, because of the weather uncertainty we will stay in.

enjoy the day

Download "Phone Link" app to your PC, found in MS Store.
It may give you a QRL to scan with your phone, or you can to the Play Store and download "Link to Windows"
Both have pretty easy directions for linking you phone and PC
Texas I went on the sites and both Phone Link & Link to Windows had terrible reviews. Have you used either?
Most of the comments were of this nature.

The Most Useless Phone App Ever Created by Man

I wrote a review of this app a while ago and it seems to have disappeared. I have never seen that happen before. Here or on the Google Play store. This app is great when it is not constantly disconnecting and you either have to restart your phone, restart your computer or reinstall everything. I complained about this years ago and it would seem there are a lot more people who have. All I really wish is that Microsoft would have someone fix the problem or make up a whole new app that actually works. I have basically given up on it because, I am done with having to reinstall the app all the time. How the bleep does it have such a high rating with so many 1 star reviews?

Good Morning All. Foggy and 30°, usually means clear skies later in the day. Mixed up and down weather for the next 10 days, freezing temperature tonight and again late next week. Just over 1.25" of rain Tuesday night through noon Wednesday. The trip to the train shed was hampered. It takes a bit of time to run off.

Sunshine today and wind tonight will help if it isn't gone soon. I will mark the spot where the back-up starts, and alter the landscape with an improved ditch when it dries out. Something that needs to be done every so often in this land of heaving black gumbo clay.
Time today for the weekly grocery/beer trek; pharmacy is also on the list. My wife made it home safely yesterday but I don't know whether she needs to add stops, or whether she's even going. She usually makes that decision around 8:00. Most likely she'll go because she had to go five days without bitching at me.

Thanks everyone for the kind comments and reactions to the recap of the liquor store build featured yesterday. This kit was a freebie thrown in with the much larger Ramones Storage and Salvage kit that I got last year. Randy of Downtown Deco makes some really nice Hydrocal structures.

Nothing to report from the train shed yesterday. Besides being harder to access, Amazon delivered a new workbench chair that I have to assemble. I started it yesterday but didn't get very far. Here's a couple of random layout shots.

Chris - Your comment yesterday morning about the car visiting the farmer's field reminded me of when I first moved into the SFW estate in 1981. Across the road from me is a Corps of Engineers flood control lake about 1200' away. It didn't used to be fenced off by the adjoining property owner, and people liked to head out there with their four wheel drive vehicles to do whatever, generally drunk. They invariably got stuck in the mud near the lake and had to walk out. This was before cell phones, and once or twice a month I would hear a knock on my door from someone needing to use the phone to get a ride home. I kept an extension phone by the door with a long cord so they could call from the porch and not track mud in the house. I made them call their friends collect since there were only a few exchanges that I could call for free. This went on until about 1986 when the land owner finally fenced off the property. Government owned the lake but not the surrounding property. Lesson learned: You can go further out with a 4wd vehicle, but you're further away from help when (not if) you get stuck.
Swal - There ain't no building inspectors in this neck of the woods. That liquor store is typical of places that I have seen in Ft Worth, San Antonio and Oklahoma City; in areas where some adjacent structures have been removed. Those cities recycle old buildings, wheras Dallas Austin, and Houston just bulldoze entire blocks and put up some shiny, unattractive, glass and metal structure.

Love the character in the brick work and aging
Thanks for that comment. I spent a lot of time trying to get such a small structure to look as good as it turned out. I'm happy with it. It's destined for a part of the layout where at least three sides are visible.

"economic energy policies"
Yes eggs are very complicated. Simply put, the cost of energy, whatever the policy or reason or who's fault it is, means much higher feed costs from farming equipment, manufacturing and transportation; higher cost to heat those gigantic hen houses, higher costs to move those eggs to the market. Coupled with the current avian flu and recent Connecticut chicken farm fire that killed 100K laying hens, we're only going to see prices rise some more.

Today is National Pizza Day. Check around and you may find some free giveaways somewhere.
Have a great day.

Sherrel - Thanks for posting those photos of the guys coming home. Bet you were proud being able to bring them home.
CHET -- I look back and think about that a lot - It represents a pinnacle in my career! They were so happy that they were cheering and clapping when the A/C left the runway in Saudi Arabia. I have had cheering on landing many times - may have flown with me before  ? - but that was a first on taking off. Except for a fuel stop in Shannon, Ireland - those guys would be on the airplane for mostly 24 hours (give or take). They were allowed to deplane in Shannon and frequent the Pub in the terminal.

On one trip - plane load of Marines with weapons - the Colonel in command would not allow his troops off the plane saying that they could not leave their weapons - other times a guard was posted. I tried to reason with him but I was not able to prevail - so I had 36 cases of beer delivered to the plane - the ground personnel at Shannon would not allow me to sign for it! I told them if anyone complained to send the bill to the owner Carl Icahn 😁!

There is one sad part to this story: I had a cousin killed during that skirmish :(. On the tip of the spear - His vehicle was hit by "friendly fire".

I'm back more normal this morning - still way behind in reading posts - lots of balloons here every morning - hope no one starts shooting? Looking at sunny and 77f today ... I had to turn on the A/c in the truck yesterday! YAY!! 😁

Good morning gang

Late start today, had an 8 a.m. appointment with the Endocrinologist. Good news, cholesterol, BP, and A1C at 6.8. A little tweaking of the meds as he wants my A1C under 5, otherwise see ya in 4 months.

Willie, you got quite the low spot there!

Tom, you are just way too intense with that Ice cream! LOL!

I use both of them. I have no trouble at all. Nearly all the photos I post are from my phone through my PC. I can text message from PC through the phone, use the phones apps on my PC.

Hello Happy Members !
Has anyone built the Woodland Scenics "Scenic Ridge" layout in H0 (N scale version bellow) ? Many thanks in advance for your replies.

index.php
I got one. If you want to build a small layout and run very short trains with 4 axle diesels and 40 foot cars, it’s a nice little layout.
If you are like me, and would like a pair of 6 axle diesels or a big steam engine, and 10+ cars, it doesn’t work very well. The one I had was N scale, HO should be almost the same.

Swai,
Here is a screen shot of Phone link on my PC. Note the tabs, Messages, Calls, Apps and Photo. You can click Photo, select the photo you want, right click, copy and then paste whereever you want. Use SAVE AS if you are saving to select albums. The copy/paste works right to the forum.

Afternoon All,

Started out the day with a walk at 58F this morning going up to 85F. Tonight, it's supposed to start raining and cool off slightly for the weekend. After chores this morning I decided to take a nap, I was tired because of very poor sleep last night. Another day of no train room. Fingers crossed I'll get several hours in it. Tonight, we're going out to supper with daughter and SIL.

Chet- More great photos. The BL-2 is an ugly beast!

Chad- Considering the size of the project I was just curious if you had a construction background.

Troy- I rode on the Strasberg RR several years ago. The steamer is great and reminds of days long past.

Karl- Another nice weathering job. Good news on your numbers.

Swal- Looks like it's really starting to come together. I take my photos on my phone. First, I re-size the photos then email them to myself. I open the email enclosures on my laptop then move the photos to my laptop photo files.

Hughie- Cool bridge.

TomO- Good to see your photo.

Mike- Good news.

Willie- Very nice-looking buildings.

I hope everyone has a good night.
