Good morning, all! Got up to 60°. The rains passed through early, in the wee hours of the morning. Temps are supposed to drop throughout the day. Going to be a gray overcast day.

Derailment in Ohio - I worked for 25 years in a plant that had a vinyl chloride unit. In the later years I would plan and schedule shutdowns. The lengths that we had to go to clear the equipment for maintenance was a big part of the first days. A controlled burn is far better than an uncontrolled explosion. What I found interesting after reading about the derailment, more to the point what might have prevented it or lessened the number of cars involved, was the mention of ECP, electric braking. Supposedly, electric braking work have stopped the train quicker so fewer cars would derail. The railroad company's lobbyist fought the proposal. In the same article it talked about placing a locomotive in the middle and back as a way to get air pressure to the brakes of more cars faster.

Yesterday I just ran a few trains.

If anyone is going to the Mad City Train Show this weekend, please tell me what you are looking for! I am purely curious because, personally I love buying and restoring used locomotives. I hope to get a few freight cars or maybe try to find a WSOR locomotive, we'll just have to see. I hope everyone is having a nice day!

Afternoon All,

Started out with chores then chauffeured MOH to many stores. After lunch I glued the 4 end braces under the long roof walk (very fiddly). After that I glued the weight (kit provided) to the bottom side of the car then test fit of the bottom to the main part of the car. After that I weighed the car with the trucks and had to add .75 oz to bring the car to 4 oz. Tomorrow I'll start on the brake piping.

Steve- My Genesis GP7-GP7, FP7 ABA, and F3 ABA all bought at different times, and all run well together without any speed matching.

Karl- A smell is usually associated with either poor diet or parasites. Skunks are very prone to parasites.

Chad- I'm not asking actual dollars (not my business), but roughly what percentage of total cost are you saving by the work you are doing?

Terry- Great figure in the day, but lousy movies.

Troy- Good luck with the middle Sis. When my Mom got sick, I couldn't get my 2 brothers to help, and my middle brother was retired.

Willie- Very nice-looking structures.

TomO- Nice photo of the grandson.

Smudge- Current motive power prices have priced me out of the new market.

Mike- Very nice.

Hughie- Nice layout shot.

I hope everyone has a good night.

I have to count but there are 50 completed 6” trees and there should be 200 armatures already twisted into the trunk and branch structure. I have to check the height breakdown on what I have. Until last night though, I had no requests for quote.

I have a request for 400-6” trees, 200-7” trees 200-5” tree and 200 bushes to be sent out 100 at a time by Labor Day. This is a return customer like every 2 years. This would be per Terry’s record keeping his 4th and smallest order.

I have to price out the job because material prices for just the wire are more then double the price of the last purchase. I have enough fiber cloth and Scenic Express leaves but I have none of the Woodland Scenics grasses that I use. Those prices are up, but the really LHS (4miles) doesn’t have the colors I need and his WS stuff he claims has been back ordered 6 weeks already. Tacky glue is up. So, the paddles of wire were available at Michael’s but not the spools that are a better value. I have plenty of candle wax for the trunks and branches. Heck, even the $1.00 bottles of hairspray are $1.25 at the Dollar Tree now. I use 2-3 bottles per 100 trees. I may try something out of the airbrush for gluing the leaves

I can’t fathom not increasing at least $1.50 to $2.50 per tree. A 6” tree costing $7.50 per tree, nope I wouldn’t buy my own tree.

My pricing was 4” for $3.00 each, 5” for $4, 6” for 5, $7 for 7 on up. Volume pricing was better but not much…

So you may or not see some tree making from me. I did see the other day a thread on tree making that looked superb.
Look at the seeds of the birch tree they make good large leaves like sycamore
i love the wire versions but there are cheaper ways
going out with a pair of secateurs can get you lots of free materials

this is playdoh but plastercine often sold Christmas time and reduced is ok, and if careful PVA and flour can produce a reasonable result out of date flour is often binned so this would be ‘free’ if available

this is bought modelling grass BUT if you have an old foam memory pillow or other foam items old cushion from a dead settee etc,if you see them in a bin ask if you can take it, if in a skip people are often glad to get back the space as they pay for the item
you can then use cheap children’s acrylic watered doen and soak the foam

a branch from a cheap weed tree elderflower (actually a very useful plant elderberry being very healthy but that’s a different topic) so I cut tree trunk then pretty it up, any one with horses or cats or dogs they groom can add the hair to a rubberised glue making the greenery for trees or bushes

Good almost afternoon. Didn't get in here for the last couple of days. Tuesday was enough to make you want to pull your hair out. Lucky I'm bald. Finally got switched over to Mint Mobile but working with the overseas people on the phone was a major PITA. They didn't speak english very well and I don't think they understood it very well. Had a problem with their program not recognizing the new SIM card. Had a big go around with them claiming that the problem was that my phone wasn't unlocked when I was looking at the printout I made. AT&T removed me from their network and I had to borrow the neighbors phone to finish the procedure. I did take a shot of Devil's Cut from the liquor shelf.

Yesterday was taken up running errands and a trip to the grocery store. Can't get over the prices. I shopped once a week before I moved as I met my buddy every Tuesday for lunch before hitting the grocery store that was the closest. Shop here every 9 to 10 days here. Sure can put a dent in a $100 bill in short order. Sure do feel bad for families with kids. My daughter in law put them on a strict budget. My son is the only one working and makes a decent salary, but things are tight. I did find out that cooking with a wok isn't as good on an electric range as a gas range. In fact, it sucks.

Willie - I used the same sheet of Evergreen for the Chevy dealer. When I was using the plastic signs for streets and sidewalks, I ended up using an Xacto knife to lightly scribe the sidewalks. Guess being cheap I guess. Good photos. Always enjoy them.

Dave - The GE 70 tonner dies for the second time just before I had to tear down the layout. I really enjoyed running that little loca as it ran so smooth. It was such a pleasure switching in the yards or industries with it By the way, I have a whole box of pine trees sitting in the closet if anyone is interested.

TomO
- That little guy could become a pro hockey player.

Jaz - Like the weathering job on those VW's. Quite a collection of race cars. I have a number of die cast cars, but in 1/24 scale. Got started when I found the 1951 Hudson Hornet and finally cut back whe I was running out o space to display them. The derails are unbelievable. Opening doors, hood, trunk, operating suspensions on some as well as spark plug wires and on and on.

Saw some videos from the UK and it looks like some folks are between a rock and a hard spot trying not to be evicted and trying to feed their family. So sad. That PM you had must have set a record for the shortest time in office.

Sherrel - I saw that it got chilly down your was. Don't think many down there re used to that. Maybe you can referee the guys upset over the fence. If it's a wooden fence, they can burn it to keep warm. Used to burn wood, but natural gas service coming in put an end to that. I used to really enjoy getting firewood as the National Forest was right out my front door. Like adjusting the thermostat on the gas stove replacement a lot better. Unfortunately there is no natural gas here. Just propane which I'm sure costs a lot more.

Karl - So glad you stayed away from LG and Samsung. Smart move. Won't get into the BS I had to put up with on my LG appliances which had to be replaced.

Chad
- Nice to see those rough ins for the window frames. Moving along.

Hughie - Like the photo.

To the archives again. RIP 95.

If you get the foam from old furniture, you can blend it in a food blender clean properly after to a suitably small size, if powdery leave 10 minutes for it to settle and spray water then add the glue not in the blender unless you run a lot faster than the wife

Which is a natural consequence of margin pricing. If you base your sales price as a percentage of cost, and costs go up, the same percentage will yield more "profit".

Here is a simplified example:

Say you base your sales price at 50% over cost. A widget costs you 10 units of currency. I'll use $ since it is easier for me to type.

So your sales price is $15 based on $10 cost. $5 profit. The next year the cost goes up to $20. So now your price is $30 and the profit $10. You doubled the profit as a number without changing any of the calculations. With inflation, the unit of currency, $ in this case, is worth less, so while the number is twice as big, the value is not likely to be twice as much the second year as the smaller amount from the previous year. Ie, the $10 profit the second year is not worth as much as a $10 profit would have been the first year.
Very Fair comment, but that devalue hits their customers harder I think

because you will be forced to work locally so you cannot travel for better pay turning people into little better than indentured servants. Just a matter of time. And those of us with land out in the boon ies eventually they’ll compulsory purchase now that won’t likely be in our lifetime but I bet it will come, and I don’t see any country being better off, unless there’s a nuclear war then they say new zealand or Australia reminds me of the book the chrysalids by John Wyndham, prophecy or what

the hospitality businesses suffered from Covid and the gov cannot afford to subsidise them
our gdp is now scary as hell, how the government will afford to pay the internet let alone get the main debt done defies reason
the eu is similarly effected
they and us have taken in Ukrainians in what was thought to be a short stopgap but it now endless, sone families have kicked them out now the subsidy has gone,
too many single women or women with children were housed with sinle men - I think you can do the math
european nato has relied on us reserves for armaments and are apparantly running critically low on ammo etc, guess who they’ll be looking to to fill that gap, even if they set up new orders they won’t appear overnight.
the uk has staggering low manpower etc nowadays we might have sone of the best (and you can argue that too) but the numbers we have are stupid, we have uk pilot who are taking 9 years to complete training and we have offered training to the Ukrainians on nato kit
tje greenhouse effect may or may not be occurring but certainly there are temperature rises and this has caused very low water levels, last summer 2022 many of the rivers in Europe dropped to such low levels it interfered with an otherwise very busy waterways transport system, garnany etc is hit badly by this
lady year uk had hosepipe bans due to low water levels, and this winter we have failed to recoup the required water,so if we get another hot summer which is likely hosepipe band]s will hit harder, last year Italy a major rice and wheat supplier lost of a third of its harvests, much of Europe suffered.
so far this winter and we are exiting it the feared blackouts due to lack of power have not occurred BUT with the continuing Russian sanctions the gas remains a big proble and much more expensive now which then effects everything from food to production manufacturing supplying homes, and Saudi has to be black mailed when frankly they benefit from higher prices and if you look at it from their point of view once their oil runs out and it is finite they have no income which is why they buy real estate in capitals around the world
companies are thinning staff to overcome overheads and the fact they know that their employees need pay rises to survive,
we are looking at the edge of the water running down the sink.

hence me being glad we are lucky enough to have had the money and sense to invest
solar power a electric car

and for the record people took the p out of Prince Charles now King Charles because of his look after the 🌍 planet ideas, but it appears he actually was more knowledgeable than those who took the p. Well who woulda thought.
I buy heirloom seeds which I can legally harvest and reuse, technically packet seed we buy should be re bought I know that several US farmers have been taken to court over harvesting seed from food they grew and have been purposely bankrupted, and now a number of countries are looking at 15 minute (or 20 minute) neighbourhoods this will start in cities and despite their promises it will lead to ghettos
because you will be forced to work locally so you cannot travel for better pay turning people into little better than indentured servants. Just a matter of time. And those of us with land out in the boon ies eventually they’ll compulsory purchase now that won’t likely be in our lifetime but I bet it will come, and I don’t see any country being better off, unless there’s a nuclear war then they say new zealand or Australia reminds me of the book the chrysalids by John Wyndham, prophecy or what
Your writings remind me of Archy 🪳 and Mehitabel 🐈

Talking about speed matched locomotives again, I have two WalthersMainline sd70ace locomotives that I've had for about a year now, they are DC and run pretty good together. Does anyone know if they would run good with an Athearn Genesis DC Sd70ace? Or would they be too different to run together smoothly?

Blimmy! A new record low temperature was set at 29 degrees last night - the prior low was 30 degrees back in 2008! It has been a cold but sunny day for around here

In spite of my dismal investment in the natural gas ETF - today finished with being within $267 of what I started the year with and I have sold call options on the stock, but I want to be careful not to let the options get "called" away. It will take over a year if the ETF does not recover, but slowly rolling the options time after time for the premium will work.
I am a happy camper but now need to work on getting back the 12% loss in the overall account from last year.

The Spousal Unit has been busy with last minute details on accomplishing items on the closing of the MIL's ranch house. I still hate to see it go, but I am too far in my sunset years to accomplish the repairs and remodels that SWMBO would want done. She has a "knack" of picking out the most expensive item on the rack! I told her that the other day when we were out -she laughed and said - "When I was 15, looking at a collection of swimsuits and my father was with me, he looked around the selection and remarked that I had chosen the most expensive one there"! I said: "Well, you still have that touch".
