I see the UP is buying a fleet of battery-operated locos.

In the short term, I can see battery powered yard switchers / local power, not getting too far from a charging station. Road power traveling over great distances, is another issue. even if the batteries have sufficient charge for a normal run between two end points, enroute problems that result in substantial delay could cause a complete breakdown and domino effect.

Uncle Pete has the resources and traffic density to electrify their main trunk routes, but I doubt that investors share the desire to spend capital on such a venture. The less diesel exhaust that a crew has to breathe in, the better. Hope this works.

Agreed!

UP should invest in hydrogen power. Canada just announced testing their 1st hydrogen powered locomotive....

Good morning all! A lovely 5 degrees out here in SE Illinois with a daytime forecast of sunny and 21. Definitely tired of winter already. 4 pages of activity here in the shop since I last had time to look in, so I must confess I missed most of it.

Had quite the evening yesterday. My wife got her car stuck partially in the driveway, partially in the yard. Ya can't see where one ends and the other starts with all the snow. I finally got it moving but it wouldn't go up the driveway, so had to go down to the road. Then, since the road is also on an incline, couldn't go anywhere that way either, not even downhill for some reason. A neighbor stopped and helped me get it going so I could get up the hill. We decided to just get it off the road in front of the house because it just wasn't going back to the driveway. So I got my tractor and started moving snow to make a temporary area to park the car in. Finally got that done, just as the gear shift on the tractor jammed and couldn't be shifted to any gear. Fortunately, it was stuck in a forward gear so I just drove it back over by the garage and shut it down for the night. A repair will be done when I have warmer weather and some light to work in.

Louis: My sincere condolences on the loss of your God Mother.

Hope you all have a great day!

Don't worry they have an engine and and generator to charge the batteries. 🙃

I wonder what the weight difference would be, lighter or heavier with the batteries. I guess if they had a trailing car or 2 that was a solar panel car to help with charging might have to be considered.

Good morning....10 degrees and only going to 17. Short lived as the temps will be low 30's the next 4 days. Train day today, I have a few cars to finish decaling before heading to weathering. In Between decals setting up I started blacking the intake screens on the ES44AC.

Good Morning All. Clear and 23°, warmer than the NWS predicted by 8°. Not that it makes a lot of difference, it's still cold to me. It did finally get above freezing yesterday, 33° for about an hour, expecting 45° today and then into the 50's and 60's for the next ten days. Lows at or near freezing every night though. Snow/ice is still covering the landscape here, roads seem to be passable as lots of cars are going by. I haven't taken the time to actually walk all the way out there to see first-hand. I'll know later today when I drive down the road to the mailbox to pick up the mail that has accumulated since Thursday. Remember that my mailbox is 1.25 miles away! Had to use the sledge hammer to loosen the firewood that had frozen together; I've been keeping a 24 hour supply inside drying out since before the storm[?] the other day.
One thing about this current weather that we are experiencing here, is my beer is staying plenty cold on the back porch! I don't have to trek out to the beer fridge in the train shed.

Thanks for the comments and likes for the bar pictures; Karl, James, George, Gary, Sherrel, Chad, Hughie, Jaz, Smudge, Curt, Louis, Tom, IB Ken, Rick, Joe, Lee, Tom O.

I did spend some time out in the train shed yesterday. Too cold for any modeling activity, but the trains ran just fine. I did some "imagineering" and realized that more trees are needed, something that I already knew. I could easily use 200 more right now and that doesn't include undeveloped areas yet. Tree making is my least favorite aspect of this hobby after soldering. I have purchased many, but even most of those require tweaking.
I'll continue today with the tour of bars and speakeasy's on the layout. I actually have 14 of them scattered about the ten towns.
Starting with the Calico Cat located in the center of a Merchant's Row I structure from Walther's.

Then we move on to Marvin's Hi Ball in Maultown. It's a DPM structure called Goodfellows Hall.

Here is Saulenas Tavern from Bar Mills, located in Vernon.

Next on our bar crawl is The Second Class Saloon, also in Vernon.

Lastly today in Jamestown, is Sud's Bucket, from JL Innovative Design.

- Condolences on the passing of your Godmother.
Sherrel - Just north of me in Ardmore OK, some enterprising Girl Scouts set up their cookie sales table in front of the medical cannabis dispensary there.
I can almost always pass a lingering kidney stone by chugging two beers rapidly. It has to be past the kidney and ureter and in the urethra first.
I have considered a car wreck somewhere on the layout, but I haven't determined where yet.
James -
A guy did a "Dukes of Hazzard" over an embankment down into a ravine holy man what a ride. The drop was a good 200 feet. They had all kinds of responders there for that.
200 feet is not a ravine, it's a valley here! Hope that he was OK.
Greg -
Finally my order from Model Scenes arrived from the Czech Republic. I was a little worried about my first time order from Model Scenes since I never received a order confirmation, nor did they answer my emails.
Probably don't read English too well.

Everybody have a great day. Stay warm and safe.

Sorry everyone,
We had the freezing rain come through yesterday and lost our power last night at supper until 4am this morning. I didn’t get back to the trains last night sadly. I have had great help from everyone here and another forum and you are 100% correct with everything you have said. I have been told to use flex by everyone…..lol. I am making headway though despite my stubbornness. I am also using Peco turnouts with the atlas track and it is slowly working albeit I am seeing how it plays out through trial and error. I would still greatly appreciate any input any of you have to offer for sure, but flex track is not being used, except if it replaces 4 straights or easing into a yard.

I do want some elevated track and I will be extending the ramp to get my 3 5/32 I think it is for NMRA clearance (I haven’t done that math yet). My train station will be elevated, but that will force me to lose my reversing ’Y’.

Good Morning all!

Wife feeling pretty poorly. Still sleeping. She got up a few times quite miserable. I'll make her a pot of tea instead of coffee this morning.

No train work yesterday, but hopefully today. I'm going to bring my youngest dau over so she can do her taxes on my TurboTax. This will be the first year she gets to check the box "legally blind." Supposedly that gets her like a $1500 tax credit. Nice, though she'd much rather her sight back.

I will change out the garbage disposal. Research says that those Badger units are not repairable. So bought a new one. Went up from the 1/2 HP unit to the 3/4 HP unit. But it looks like it is the same size and layout which will make it easier to plumb and connect the electric. I'm hoping about an hour long job, and then maybe run some wiring under the layout. The laser level should arrive today, so will play with that some as well. All while taking care of the missus. My oldest dau got the boost yesterday at the same time - haven't heard how she is doing yet.

It is currently 4F above 0 and supposed to get up to 26! Shorts weather!

Cheers! ANd blessings to all,

Steve J

Good morning gang!

Flo, can I get a southwest omelet with a side of bacon!

Wifeykins and the boy are off to Hood College this morning for a "college visit" . This is his second visit there and 1 of the top 2 on his list. There will be interviews and meetings, hopefully with good results.

Me and the mutts will be just chillin, I've got to bring in some firewood then work on relocating the puter in the basement to make way for benchwork and more Right of Way! Then later off to Wally World with Wifey to pick up a bicycle for Granddaughters 5th birthday party tomorrow.

BBL, y'all take care now, y'hear!

Good morning modelers, authors and dreamers of trains in this global environment. Flo, I would like a diet Dr Pepper please. Food, no thanks I had my 40 carbs already at home.

Trains, I have no plans for the train room today which means I probably will get in there and do something. I have a list of to do in the room but like the honey-do list I have ignored it. Need to get back at it.

I have had thoughts of taking everything down except the east side of the paper mill which includes the pulp yard and wood chip pile. Even with the slot track There is plenty of space in the train room and I am currently dissatisfied with my track issues. Again as a warning. If you glue your rail down like I do, do not use mineral spirits to clean the track. What a mess i created. Since we won’t be heading back to the islands until summer time, if then, I have plenty of time to destroy and rebuild.

Terry will leave for Pasadena tomorrow and Maui now on Monday. That has been a messed up deal with plane issues the last few days. She wants the heat and sun or would have told the brother to just buy the property without one of us looking at it in person. My sister doesn’t care, just as long as she has a place to be when she visits the islands.
be safe
TomO
