Good morning gang!

29° under clear skies only looking for a high today of 40°. Yesterday‘s rain snow issue is behind us now. It was almost nothing but rain. Next chance for a weather event comes with a chance of snow Friday and Saturday.

About the North Coast Engineering system is that it can grow with the user. The power cab can be used as a full function throttle with a pro cab system. Most of the other starter systems do not have this capability so when you get an upgraded system you have to get new throttles. I started out back in 1999 with a pro cab system and have since through estate auctions and other sources have procured several of the power cabs which I use on my layout just like a pro cab.

Later gang!

I watched this and thought "that gent is too short to be Louis" but he loves his Christmas trains.
Not to mention far too productive to be me.

l will never have his cash or energy,
That makes two if us!

If they’re all Department 56 buildings, and I have no reason to think otherwise, I can’t even begin to imagine how much the buildings alone might be worth.

New Department 56 buildings usually sell for about $100 each but in the collectors' market, some can go for $2,500 or more. Many discontinued pieces have at least doubled in value, and for many, their worth increases every year.

I’d estimate a conservative value at around $100,000, probably much higher for everything shown in the video. A ten-inch section of Lionel’s FasTrack can sell for up to $10, making it one of the cheapest items featured. I wouldn’t be surprised if the total reached $250,000 or more.

@troyphoto A truly amazing video, thank you for posting it.

Yesterday on our favorite evil auction site, I found an Atlas SP locomotive for an attractive price, (65). I put it in my watch list for later, after I actually, you know, get a paycheck from the new place.
Today, the seller offered me a special price for that engine--$88.
Umm, NO.

Good Evening Folks. Clear with an almost full moon tonight.
The meat that I took out to thaw wasn't ready in time for supper tonight, so we went out to eat. Had a very private meal at the Red Lobster, giving them another chance after almost a year and after the ownership change. I say private because there were more employees there than customers. Four servers, a host, a bartender, two cooks and a manager for a total of nine. When we came in, we were the second couple there. When we left, there were two other couples, but the first couple had already left; meaning just six customers. This place will be closed soon with this kind of business. On the other hand, the food was better than we have experienced in the past, prices were actually more reasonable and servings didn't seem to have been reduced.
As I posted, I don't know how much longer they can stay open. And they're not the only ones. Another place in town, Outback, is in the same shape, but with a reduced menu, higher prices and increased competition. Newer places like Texas Roadhouse, Longhorn Steak and Saltgrass, have full parking lots every night. All with better (in my opinion) food. Casual dining has gotten really cut-throat in Denton lately.
The Madison Outback Steakhouse was one of 21 national locations that closed in October. In 2023 they had 773 locations, they are down to 660 in 2025 and promise to close more. Never been to one.

Casual dining in the Madison Metro has generally done well and from 5pm to 7:30pm you really should have a reservation before going. Fast Food on the other hand is very mixed. Our Culvers in Dane County that are owned by one of the Grandparents of the kids that slow car race at the grandsons say they are booming. He tells me McDonald’s are also. The Wendy’s have all closed since Covid but one and there are just 2 Burger King’s left. The National sub shops he said in October were getting clobbered by the locally owned sub shop called Milo’s which seems like there is one every few blocks.

Tough business

29°F and cloudy today. This is going to be the warm day of the week at a high of nearly 40°F. Then tomorrow a high of 23°F. More snow by Sunday, but that will amount to nothing.

I think I'm going to put in that gravel road off of the road that runs behind the Litzirüti Bahnhof today. There are two chalets off the main road that need access and a driveway for the house in front would be nice too.

Servus!

We're going down to my BIL's celebration of life this weekend. His zip code is 94022 ( Los Altos) and the average home price is $4.8m. Our hotel is a couple miles away in Palo Alto where the average home price is only $3.5m. Silicon Valley money....old and new.

This restaurant is next door to our hotel. They are booked out 2 weeks. I think demographics💰 have a lot to do with the success of restaurants.
Look at these menu prices.😳

We went over to the Tokyo Dome for lunch. Our hotel is a couple blocks away. This is where the Yomiuri Giants play as well as concerts. Covered dome stadium. Lots of restaurants and food courts and everything at and around it. We had lunch at a sushi place that was at a mall and outdoor entertainment area. They had this big rollercoaster, ferris wheel, a merry-go-round and log ride/flume ride (but not shaped like a log).

This is for Louis

This was at the outdoor mall/enbtertainmet across the street from the Dome. Mostly restaurants and similar but also some stores.

This was lunch (some of it -- we had seconds and thirds)

I replaced our HVAC 2022. 23 years old and we only had to replace the AC start capacitor once and the furnace control board once. We just upgraded to the current version of what we had. Best $9k I could have spent. I would hate to think what the cost would be today.

Good morning Crew from an ugly looking start to the day. No sun to be seen though sunrise was 4 minutes ago at 7:12am. It’s 27f degrees now heading to that warm high of 29. The guessers have posted over night low of 4 with a high of 15 tomorrow! Winter is being sent in early by Mother Nature.

If the plan to be home today has changed I’ll be in and out of the train room today. I want to finish 100% the weathering of the Swing Bridge and its 2 approach bridges. They are going to be fairly clean but the rivets heads some of the joining surfaces will get some rusting. I hope my eyesight holds out this morning.

Found something out yesterday at the friend’s layout work session. We needed to add a raised 2x8” floor with OSB before putting in the 3 decks we were building yesterday. 40’ of the 70’ wall actually sits back 4’ in an alcove type thing. I’ll get pictures next time but man yesterday was a tough day for the 3 of us 70+ but I think we did better than the 2 guys in their 50’s and the 4 in their 60’s. Was very disappointed in our progress before lunch but we got the floor joists down to cover the alcove. But after lunch, it’s seemed everything flew together. The 70’ section we worked on got everything in as planned. The owner had meticulously engineered everything including templates for where to put anchors into the walls for each deck support. With 3 hammer drills going on the poured 30+ year old concrete walls and 2 impact drivers working the floor joists it all looked super at the end. Some of the guys Friday will raise his ore dock that is 12’ long to match the middle deck. I’d like to video that but I cannot go Friday. Next week though the 5/8” wall board goes down on everything we did yesterday. Then all backdrops and walls downstairs in this 60’ x 86’ section of his basement will get painted along with a earth color on the 5/8” drywall track support. Part of the basement is under a 5 car garage that we can enter through. He will get the wiring crews in after the painting for probably 3 sessions. I don’t expect to go back till January as I will be on one of the track laying crews. Track crews in our group work in 3’s. 2 work, form and lay the track. The 3rd is the resistance soldering expert who follows along and every 3’ of rail gets a feeder wire. There are 3 guys in the group that have resistant soldering rigs and they are good!

This was a complicated endeavor especially compared to other group builds we have done. Normally 3-6 months we can assembled a layout in 1200 sq’. No scenery but up to getting it operational. But this huge 4800+ square feet build was tough because against all suggestions he did not empty the storage areas that were under the old layout we had to dismantle. We started this in September of 2024. But we are getting near the fun stuff.

I have been part of 2 non club bigger builds. A couple years ago one of the now 50 year olds had an offer on the 150+ year old family farm none of his kids wanted so he took the offer he couldn’t refuse. Kept the farmhouse, 40 acres and the oldest dairy barn nearest the house. Had the barn stripped of all equipment, jack hammered the floors, laid new concrete and painted it a brillant white inside. About 150’ long and 48’ wide. We started with a 50’ staging room. 2 U shaped decks that hugged the walls that fed the layout. We got lots down before he called a halt to it about 3 years ago. It took around 40 minutes to travel from staging exit to staging entrance and that was just really the outside walls of the barn. He said yesterday he is getting the urge to get going on the plan but doesn’t need 2 decks for the rest! He asked me about kitbashing a few Walthers paper mill kits for him. Of course I said yes! The other was a layout we tore down, cleaned the barn up and before we laid track his wife divorced him.

Geez, finish up and post! I wrote this around 7 but never hit post, 9:37 now

Be well

I went to an Alexander’s Steakhouse in San Fran. Super ritzy. Super expensive. Luckily I was not paying. I was invited by some folks I had down contract and consulting work for when I was at the Apple Developer Conference 10 years ago

I don't think I could even afford to park on their lot. And no beer menu? What's up with that?

Good Morning All. Clear and 37°, warming up to 61° later on. Then another norther comes in around 10 tonight and it will only be in the mid-40's tomorrow. It's supposed to be a one day event and should warm back up on Friday. Still no snow here!

Yesterday was "refuse" day, meaning I took care of trash to the dumpster from the house and train shed, moved more dead vegetation to the compost, did a load of burn trash and moved aluminum cans to the "crushing center". Managed to do a load of laundry and stacked a bit of stray firewood. Lots of other small tasks kept me occupied as well.
I'm letting the fire go out in the wood stove so I can remove ashes today, it's overflowing. I usually fill a 10 gallon metal pail, but today it looks like maybe 1 2/3 pails! Got to find a safe space in the garden for them, because the embedded embers will start a fire if I put them directly in the compost pile. Don't ask how I know this! Working on tomorrow's grocery list which already is half full since we skipped last week. Wife already has a list of other places that she/we are going to stop at including the UPS store to send back clothes that she bought from Amazon.

I forgot to mention the other day, that the Lexus continues to amaze me. I drove a stripped down Honda Civic for 45 years and I am not used to many of the more modern conveniences built into this SUV. It was near freezing when I got in to go to jury duty on Monday and much to my surprise, the heated seat and steering wheel came on automatically! I know how to do it manually, but not ever having a car with them, I don't think to turn them on. Guess that I don't have to. It's similar to the automatic high/low beam headlights which have been getting spooked by some Christmas displays. I have never turned the high beams on myself, but they come on automatically when driving on our dark country roads. They automatically dim when the car detects a turn signal just in case there's someone coming on the cross street that you're turning on to. Of course they also dim themselves if the detectors sense either headlights or taillights ahead of you. I do still miss my manual transmission though. I find myself resting my hand on the shift lever in stop and go traffic every once in a while!

Nothing significant out in the train shed yesterday. I resumed figure painting and ran some laps with a few different train combinations. I also looked for the missing package of sanding sticks that's out there somewhere. I don't plan on spending a lot of time looking further, as I will just stop by Michael's or Hobby Lobby tomorrow and just get some more.
How about a few remaining pictures from that transplanted Minnesota layout that's now set up at Traintastic in Gulfport; which I visited while on vacation.

Whoops! Missing a roof here!

That black pipe in the upper right corner of the picture above is connected to a plastic sheet collecting/draining water from a leak in the roof.

In the background here is one of the many display cases for models in the museum. That Ferris wheel in some of the other pictures is made from something called K'Nex. They had a lot more of them in the old museum that are not set up here.
One thing that I consider a real shame, is that the club that runs this place does not have operating sessions on this or any of the other excellent layouts. Some are definitely just display layouts, but this one was built by the original owner to be an operating layout.

Troy - It seems to me that defendant chatting with a potential juror is grounds for a mistrial? I'm surprised that that didn't come up! RE the metal detector: We had to go through one the first time we entered the courtroom. But we were sent back out into the hallway several times after that, and we did not go through the detector again??? Any juror could have easily gone to their vehicle during those breaks and gotten a bomb or firearm and brought it back in.
BTW The judge in the case we went in for was a spittin' image of Senator Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee.
Karl - Your metabolism may be different than mine, but even after 10 years of retirement, I still can't sleep late! I never really counted down the days, I just made the decision when I was ready. I was 63 at the time. And as Tom O posted "Don't count your days. You’ll go nuts as the days will really drag"!
John - I heard that excuse from one gentleman on Monday. While he ultimately wasn't picked since they got 12 people before they came to him, he wasn't allowed to leave until all of us were dismissed.

This one for Louis, today would have been Ozzy Osbourne's 77th birthday. It's also the 76th birthday of singer Mickey Thomas of Jefferson Starship and also sang lead for Elvin Bishop, ("Fooled Around And Fell In Love").

Everyone have a wonderful Wednesday. Sorry for the extra long-winded post this morning.;)
