We made it to Kobe this afternoon. I went to the next stop from the Shinkansen station (Sannomiya) and did some last minute shopping for Christmas (cards for our kids and the host couple, some sort of house gift for the host couple, and some do it’s since I found a Mr Donut). I made it home finally early evening. Dinner and now a shower and bed.
Tomorrow is Chistmas.

Merry Christmas everyone!

Here is the train we rode from Tokyo. I got it after we got off as it was leaving.

and here are (some of) the donuts. Mister Donut originated in Boston when the business partners in Dunkin Donuts split ways and the guy who didn’t keep the name made his own. He eventually expanded to Japan where the business manager he hired decided to not copy the American way of doing donuts but to adopt Japanese styles. It is now the largest donut chain in Japan. Dunkin’ Donuts came to Japan but has not done well. There is one Mister Donut left in the US (at the time the Wikipedia article was written).

While they have more traditional donuts these style here are the best. A bit chewy inside.

At Sannomiya I went shopping at a couple department stores but also walked one of the “shopping streets”, which is how Japan did a “mall” before malls became a thing. They would basically put a (glass) roof over a street lined with shops. A lot of them have kind of not done so well as they’ve built malls everywhere here but they renovated and improved and upgraded a lot of these shopping streets in some cities like you see here and they are vibrant shopping areas.

Right, Gentlemen and Ladies.

Tomorrow morning I'm off with my eldest to visit my sister 200 miles away in East Anglia (East Coast), staying for Christmas and New Year, it's not a tradition, I don't have any since my divorce, I do miss the ones we had, more for my kids than anything else.
I'll have my phone so I'll hopefully be able to keep up over the next week.

So I'm going to wish everyone

Merry Christmas and A Happy New Year. 🥳 🥳🥳🥳🥳
Have a great holidays Smudge!

Well, howdy there internet MRR people

It's Troy again,

Coming to you from the writing cave. Nine Hundred-ish words worded so far today. I've learned who Prince Edward Island is named after. When boats could actually get from the St. Lawrence River into Lake Erie. (1829 for those keeping score), and I invented a history for the Flaming Ghost Ship of the North Umberland Straight.

It's been fairly productive today.

We were supposed to be visited by the daughter and her BF, but they've postponed to next weekend. That means we were able to move Xmas eve dinner to tomorrow. Mother-in-law and Sis-in-law coming over then.

Trying to get my wife to venture out for Mexican today, since temps will be (barely) above zero today.

We don't have a frozen pizza for our traditional Xmas eve pizza. So wife is making a pasta caserole

Good Morning. Hope everyone has a great Christmas Eve. 6° and sunny. The wind appears to have calmed down a bit.

Last evening, we were watching TV when the house began to feel exceptionally cold. Noticed on the thermostat that the temperature was 4 degrees below setting. A trip to the basement revealed that the furnace had tripped, the Aprilaire water was still running, but nothing else was on. I manually turned off the Aprilaire, and inspected the furnace. I noticed nothing wrong, reset the breaker, and observed the furnace start its starting sequence. It fired up, the blower came on and it ran for about 50" before tripping out again. I called for service, reset again, this time waiting for 5" and it again started and ran for about an hour. By this time, it was after eleven, so I noted the LEDs were showing a fault, and went to bed, setting my alarm for 0400 and running a trickle of water in each sink. At 0130, I had a call to nature, and noticed the temperature in our bedroom had risen. I reset the alarm for 0530 and went back to bed. Apparently, the furnace also has a timed reset, and it self started overnight, so by morning it was up to normal temperature settings. I'm waiting to hear from the technician. This will be pricey, but I do not want to risk the same tonight. Last time this did this it was a bad sensor. Of course, if temperatures were "normal", this would never happen, right?

Nothing ever happens at 2PM on a Wednesday afternoon in May when it’s 72 and sunny.

Morning all,

Been up since 4am, awake since 3am. Don't know why I couldn't sleep. Got the laundry almost done. Stuff to get ready for tomorrow's dinner. We're having a traditional dinner, but gifts and such are happening next week due to scheduling with everyone's other families and parental custody agreement of the middle granddaughter.

Good morning from chilled So. Central Wisconsin. We are at the warmest it has been in a little more then 48 hours. We have no temperature as the WeatherChannel app is reporting 0 degrees but feeling like -22.

Some last minute bakery runs to pick up the rolls and baguettes ordered for the open house today, they are ready as I texted the bakeries at 6 this morning. The meats will get sliced around 10:30 and should take me 30-45 minutes. The plan is we will be ready at 11 for guests at noon.

Christmas dinner plans have changed. Instead of 10 family and 4 friends tomorrow at the 2pm sit down dinner is now a reception with about 40. If the niece gets here she will officiate a wedding tomorrow, if not it will be Monday. Isabel our newly cowned property manager and her partner, Matilda (the Vet) are getting married. They got the license yesterday. Terry and the daughter have been ready about a week for these change of plans (to me). While I knew it was coming eventually, I just didn’t know when. It will be an extra fun Christmas. I get to present Isabel as she never knew her Mexican parents and Matti will be presented by one of her professors as her parents disowned her years ago when she came out.

The son is in Dallas and now flies into Madison today at 4:38pm. If all goes ok, he will be on the same flight as his Aunt and cousin. We are hoping everything works out and they get here.

enjoy your day

Good Christmas Eve Morning to All. It's mostly cloudy and 19°, up from 17° two hours ago. NWS has raised it's high temperature prediction for today to 36°. That will be welcome after 48 hours below freezing. So far so good. I only have one small section of cold water pipe that's frozen, maybe 4'; but it's PEX pipe and shouldn't burst. That faucet is tough to drip correctly since it's a "uni-faucet" and it apparently wasn't in the middle to drip hot and cold at the same time. Yep! Despite insulation on the pipes, I still am susceptible to frozen plumbing when temps get into the low teens. No wind chill this morning since there is no wind.
I did venture out last night and picked up a couple of pizzas at a nearby (12 miles) Italian food place. This is not our favorite Italian place in town, however their pizzas are better. Strange that there can be two Italian eateries in a town of only 9,000 people. And both are BYOB! No real plans for today except as directed by my wife. I'll do my usual fire-stoking and bring in wood.
Our #2 daughter and her entire family came by yesterday (with BBQ) to pick up the granddog. We'll be going there tomorrow to celebrate the latter part of Christmas Day for our now new traditional Christmas ritual. SIL prepares a seven rib standing prime rib, along with smashed taters and green beans. My wife fixes Yorkshire Pudding and the gravy, while both daughters fix pies. The other SIL brings the beer and wine and I stay out of the way and take a nap. Earlier we go to daughter #1's home for Christmas brunch consisting of Taylor Ham, waffles with ice cream, and thick-cut bacon; along with mimosa's to drink. One of my SIL's is from Pennsylvania and the other from South Jersey, hence the Taylor Ham which I purchased since it doesn't seem to be available in Dallas!?!? We'll do the gift exchange there before heading a mile away to the other daughter's home. I expect to get model railroad stuff that I picked out on an "Amazon List" that that generation prefers to use.

Train shed is still too cold for anything other than just running trains. The new heater together with the old one keep it warmer than years past, but only about 30° warmer than the outside air. So it was just 45° in there yesterday. I could put a home-sized HVAC unit out there, but I would have to run an upgraded electrical service

No new pictures from the train shed right now, but Curt pointed out a structure in the background of a picture last week, Ramone's Storage & Salvage; a Hydrocal structure from Downtown Deco. I built this structure somewhat recently in October 2021, but some of you may not have seen it.

Troy - I assume that you recovered from the back issue since you didn't mention it this morning. If not, get well soon.
Todd - In this part of Texas, we get treated to this weather every so often, but it doesn't last for long. Except for February 2021. According to those who keep more accurate weather records than me, we expect to see 6 days each winter that the temperature does not rise above freezing, but it is usually in the upper teens and lower 20's. We had one in November and two this month, so we are halfway there statistically. But already this month, I had 12 days in a row where it didn't get below 57°, and it looks like another week like that starting next Wednesday.
Tom O - I'm not to sure that I could ever get PC. I'm an old fashioned person and except around Austin, political correctness is not too prevailing or tolerated in our state.
Good luck to your family stranded in DFW airport. I can assure you that it isn't the airport, as it never closed down. I'm sure that the airlines cannot get their planes in the right place at the right time.
Sorry that I can't make the open house, but I am avoiding putting too many miles on the rental car.
Chris - Have a safe trip to East Anglia.
Swal - Good luck with the jet pump. Tough time of year for that to happen.
Joe - Oh my! Good luck to you with the furnace.

Hey Louis, today would have been Lemmy Kilmister's 77th birthday. I never really realized that he was that much older than me! It is also Dr Fauci's 82nd.
Everybody have a great day, Happy Christmas Eve and Merry Christmas to all who I might not see tomorrow. Peace be with you.

Ok, the furnace mystery continues. Tech arrived, checked out system...everything currently working as intended...possible culprits are two original pressure switches, or an overheat situation due to insufficient air flow. Service call $125. not bad for a Saturday, and Christmas Eve, which is a semi-holiday.

Good morning all, -6F this morning feels like -27 with the brutal cold wind. Sun is out, however, and the fire is crackling so pretty nice Christmas eve day.

The birds are feasting ahead of the humans this morning:

Chritmas eve day r.JPG

I live in east central Minnesota, between Sandstone and Finlayson

TomO- you have a big day ahead of you, hope all goes well

Troy - I don't see you has being the "mansion" type

Joe - those inconsistent fails can really be a bugger

The windmill is not attached yet, will touch up the paint before anchoring.
