ModelRailroadForums.com is a free Model Railroad Discussion Forum and photo gallery. We cover all scales and sizes of model railroads. Online since 2002, it's one of the oldest and largest model railroad forums on the web. Whether you're a master model railroader or just getting started, you'll find something of interest here.

Seeing everyone's really good photos on here really drives me to work on my layout. You guys are great motivation.

Morning fellers,
Continuous steady rain since sometime in the very early morning.
Good thing we aren't working today (Larry has eye appt.). My finger tips are raw and a few are bleeding. You guitar players know what I'm talking about.
I probably slept around 14 hours last night. I'm still hacking up sheet rock mud dust.
I'm sort of in need of some groceries but I really don't feel like walking - especially in the rain!
E.

Ok so here is what I have pictured in my head. Maybe not an interchange but a way to expand maybe?

I just laid out some track to kinda draw up what I have thought up.

I do need a bigger table. Well don't really need but it would be nice to have one. At any rate I would really like to at least set the ground work for expansion at a later date. I don't exactly have to do it now I suppose. But that's what I'm thinking. Shoot even if I cant expand I at least could have a team track.

Bob--you welders really earn your pay!! Too bad your hours weren't "guaranteed". Companies don't like to do that, however.

I'm not complaining (too much) about the life of a welder. It's been a very good and challenging occupation for me. It can be brutal sometimes but I would do it all over again and it's given me the opportunity to do things most can only read or dream about. On the plus side, I don't always have to work as a welder.

Our hours are never guaranteed, sure would be nice if they were. I've gone on jobs that were only to be two shifts and ended up being a month of 7-12's and it's gone the other way at times as well. That's life and I learned a long time ago that nobody listens or cares if I do complain!

Chet, did they run both diesels and electrics on that line? When did they quit the electrics? Love the scenery!

Chessie-3, you could put an extension coming off one of those tracks and put a couple of turnouts on it to use as a staging yard. Make it detachable and hopefully space wouldn't be a problem. Could really make things a little more interesting.

Diesels did run with the electrics. Here are a couple of photos a what you could regularly see along the mountain division of the Mulwaukee Road. The MILW figured out a way to control the diesels fron the electrics.

The Milwaukee Road ceased electric operations in 1973. I had not moved back to Montana until 1977 and thankfully didn't witness this. The mismanagement of the railroad is what was probably mostly responsible for the demise of the railroad. The western division, west of Minneapolis was the money maker for the railroad, but the management was cooking the books. In the mid west there was so much competition between railroads, the MILW was divering money from the western part of the railroad to cover losses in the mid west.

At one time, because of the electric locomotives, the Milwaukee Road had the fastest transit time from the Pacific northwest to the mid west. When the ceased electric operation, it was right during the mid east oil embargo driving up diesel prices. The MILW was also not maintaining the rails and road bed in the western states and as a result speeds had to be lowered.

Having spent so much time with the Milwaukee Road, I really miss it along with many of my relatives who worked for it.

We are on the same sheet of music. I need to get my trains off the layout. Bring in empties and take out loads. I need a staging yard off of my layout.

Those Little Joe's were an unusual and unique design. The catenary looks like it was less robust than what was used in the eastern US but it must have been sufficient to do the job and I would think the winters would be much more severe in the west.

Really kind of surprised that there hasn't been more of a push for electrification on the railroads. I would think that the costs would eventually win out in favor of electrics.

When I worked for Komatsu Mining Systems, several mines had pantograghs added to the haul trucks to use electricity from overhead versus that from the diesel engine for the haul out of the pit. By using the power from the overhead wires they could increase the speed of the trucks considerably over the power supplied by the diesel. The haul trucks worked on the same principle as a railroad loco.

Afternoon All,

Had a good time at Jon's today and Phil was able to make it, making it better! After getting home I spent about 3 hours hooking everything up (track only) except the mainline going around the coal mine turnouts. Next step is rolling a Walthers R50b (finicky) through everything in both directions, then start testing with a K4s, L1, and H10s. The thing that was the hardest and longest to do was getting the right fit on the background side of the rear turnout.

Garry- Great pics. You really are an MRR artist.

Chessie- I like it. I really should do something like that on my layout.

Chet- That photo reminds me of my layout where you come off the bridge and the track makes a 180 running through Running Bear Pass. There is a prototype for everything!

I hope everyone has a good night.

My Backdrops arrived today!!! Coincides with MLK day which we have off, should be able to install them then!

They are 2 x 12' x 36" and 1 x 10' x 36", from Backdrop Warehouse. They will be applied permanently using rubber cement to my hardboard backing that has already been constructed. It is a little tight between the backdrop and layout, I can fit but a "large" person would have difficulty.

IF anyone wants to help, give me a call (don't email me). I am in Cloquet, MN and my phone number is 218-269-5329. I admit I am a bit excited!

Good afternoon ...

Chet, Sherrell, Curt and others ... Thanks for remarking about my photo with the SD's . That scene is the Village of Valley Heights (humor attempt) ... To force perspective I used smaller houses and narrowing roads.

Curt .... Your project is coming along very nicely.

Dave in MN .... Congratulations on getting backdrops from Backdrop Warehouse.... I considered their product, but the cost of doing my 130' of wall would have been a bit much. .... I used to make trips to Duluth in the wInter, and it is cold there in January for sure.

Chessie ..... Your photo reminds me of a model railroader who actually put tracks in his corner as in your picture. He had a big sense of humor evidently. ..... He kit-bashed a gondola as follows. He made a couple of 45 degree cuts and discarded a wedge section cut from the middle. He glued the end pieces at a right angle. The result was a gondola with ends going 90 degrees away from each other. ....... He placed it on track that was 90 degrees such as in your photo. ........ I hope you can picture what I am saying because I doubt I can find the photo again.

It was very funny to see.

Great pics everyone. You all are kickin' it!
I didn't do a thing except walk to the store for groceries after the rain left.
If it weren't for my finger tips being so hurt I might could a little something.
Certainly not anything to do with track work - especially fitting joiners on!
Operating a zipper and tieing shoes was painful enough.

Dave, I'd love to come help! It'd be way too long a drive however. I imagine the better part of a full day.
E.

Yay! We're not working until Monday! My fingers do need the rest.
Perhaps I'll runs some trains tomorrow. I know they must miss me. :D

Hey, where has the FNG been recently?
I haven't seen any posts from him in a couple days.
Granted I haven't been around much but at least I try to look to see what I miss during the days.
E.

BigE- He said the other day he would be gone for a couple of days.

Roger that. Thanks Curt.
I figured he'd be eating up all these photos and talk of the fellers re-doing some track.
I am and I'm not about to tear up anymore track than I did when I put in the 2-line engine shed.
E.

CURT and CHET - After I got home, had lunch and stomach had bad reaction. Get back to you tomorrow.

wish all a goodnight.

Phil
