Ok guys I'm going to throw an idea out there. Would it even be plausible to add an interchange to my layout or would it be too far fetched?

I can go two ways with this. Maybe more. Conrail was sharing the southern coalfields with Chessie. I can go Norfolk and Western towards the south western part of West Virginia. Those are the roads I know of. And an interchange with what was family lines.

Ok three ways. Not two West Virginia education at its best.

Well, I'm home and the job is done. Only got four hours tonight instead of a full twelve hour shift. Boy, does some of that stuff STINK!!! By virtue of being the smallest welder, I got to climb in the tank and do the prep and weldout on the inside. The smell was really potent and the inside was very slick. I had to climb down a narrow ladder and crawl around the mixing paddles, do all of my work and get the tools and myself out afterwards while wearing a fall protection harness and being tied off continually to a fall arrest/retrieval system. It's all buttoned up and the welds have all passed NDE (nondestructive testing). The tank still needs to be pressure tested and a new certification stamp issued after passing. All pressure vessels are required to be retested after any modifications. It didn't last quite as long as estimated but I guess that's just a reflection of skilled union craftsmanship! Shameless plug!

When I was a kid growing up on the farm, there was an old thresher with a wood body that was just setting for years, slowly rotting away. Pretty amazing piece of machinery.

Nice steel mill Garry! Is that the "Gary Steel Works"?

That's what I was thinking. Why not? I have a corner where I could add an interchange if I want to. Two more turnouts and a 90° crossing would work.

All you really need is a single turnout and a piece of track that extends to the edge of the layout. Ideally, it should hold a couple cars or so.

Good Morning All. 46 degrees and dark here this morning, going back up to the mid-60's this afternoon. In a few hours, I go in for some oral surgery, having some broken teeth removed; the gums will be prepped for eventual implants. I'm actually looking forward to it as food is constantly getting jammed up between two of them. Three implants and two crowns will complete my lower jaw...previous two years have been spent doing the upper jaw. Costly but worth it. Maybe I should have purchased a Powerball ticket.
Glad to see you all enjoyed the old thresher pictures. That's it for now.
Willie

Well, don't know how GOOD it is but it is morning. Chilly-63* and rainy. Wind to pick up later with big storms likely.
Meeting Curt at Jon's house about 10. Will learn proper way to solder.

WILLIE- I shudder just reading about dentist. Have had my problems.

Chessie- What about the Virginian RR ? Or is that to early?

Good morning all. Starting off at 17 degrees this morning.

Garry - Thanks for the sdditional photos of the steel mill. Quite an impressive facility.

Willie - Thanks for the photo. I have seen a number of these out in the fields all across the state here also, but never bothered to photograph one.

Here's an interesting old photo I ran across. I remember this location well when riding with my relatives who worked on the Milwaukee Road. This train is descending down the west side of Pipestone pass into Butte, MT. It is nearing the bottom of the down grade. The locomotive pulling this caboose can be seen in the distance over the top of the box car. I always enjoyed going over the pass.

Virginian sounds like a good one. Unfortunately it's before my era on my layout. Virginian Railway operated up to 1959 when it merged with the Norfolk and Western. Would be a great interchange if I was modeling an early C&O layout. Believe it or not there is actually a Virginian plate girder bridge not too far from me. Had it not been at night when I saw it I would have gotten a picture of it.

Good morning, 12 above and light snow. Light snow all day yesterday as well, although it added up to 3"

Bob--you welders really earn your pay!! Too bad your hours weren't "guaranteed". Companies don't like to do that, however.

Chet--nice caboose shot!

Garry--very nice mill buildings, how large is the entire complex?

Chessie--I don't even know how the interchange track would work?

Good morning and happy Friday !

Bob, Chet, LSM, and others .... Thanks for commenting on the steel mill ......

LASM ... The coke oven is in separate location it it takes up about 2' X 6' including tracks entering it. ....The main part of the steel mill complex is on about 2' X 14' including tracks entering it.

Photo below has a freight train with 2 SD24's and 1 SD9.

48 degrees this morning .. cloudy, but no rain in the plan. Forecast calls for a high of 68. It's been about the same all week.

Garry Another sterling photo! I remember, as a kid, traveling over many roads with the wooden posts with the cables .. nicely done.
