Good Morning, Happy Friday! 28°, and overcast this morning. My preference, is "Classic Country", and "Texas Swing" (Bob Wills, Asleep at the Wheel etc). Yee Haw!

Hey BigE,

I am sorry to hear about your loss and I know how deeply it hurts.

One thing I can tell you, while no one could ever replace moose another pet will help you both.

My 7 year old Cocker Spaniel Bessy died from sudden heart failure 10/11/12 and I was lost without her. I don't live alone but when my grandson is at school and everyone else is working I am alone. I did not want another pet but my wife persisted. Even though she did not want another pet she knew it would benefit me. After much prodding from my family I finally relented and found a beagle listed on the ASPCA web site and I thought he needed me more then I needed him so I set about going through all the paper work.

In the mean time my son found a puppy at a breeder and only by coincidence she was a beagle as well. Before my application was approved and I could pick up Tucker he told me about the puppy and I got her for my grandson who was also heartbroken over Bessy. I drove to western Maryland and picked up the puppy with my wife and grandson. On the 1.5 hour ride home my grandson and the puppy bonded and he came up with her name, Sophie. The next day the paper work was approved for Tucker and now I have 2 friends. Nobody can replace my Bessy, but sharing our home with the beagles has really helped me recover. It took some time but I have bonded with my crazy loud mouth beagles and I love them and could not imagine life without them.

If I were you I would consider a rescue pet, there are many who need homes and before you know it you will bond with your new friend too.

Here are my babies in the raggedy old chair with their Redskins blanket. I could never part with that chair. My Dalmatian Mickey slept in that chair, he passed on 12/17/2002, My Bessy slept in that chair and now my beagles sleep in that chair. Everybody hates that chair, but my basement in my domain, my train room, my cave and nobody is getting ride of that chair! if they don't like my chair or my non-filter camels (I have an air purifier 3 times bigger then necessary) they can leave my cave! I disinfect the chair regularly, but the stains will never come out no matter what I have tried!

Funny you would say that Louis. My neighbor, Ronnie, has a cat that has seen fit to adopt me and made himself welcome. Him and Moose were buddies so it isn't like he hasn't been over many times already. One day Ronnie's wife if I had seen their cat. I said "yeah, he's asleep on my couch right now. In fact he spent the night with me". Since then, he's spent every night with me. They don't mind. Like they say "at least we know where he is".
I have a 6" thick down comforter that just puts him in hog-heaven. He'll curl up and sleep all day on it and I'll forget he's even in the house. He's no where near as loud as Moose so if I'm in the train room, he has to come get me to let him out. In fact he hardly makes a sound at all.

That is great news BigE! Thanks for telling me.

I have a cat too. She is defiantly different then my dogs, but growing up with my dogs she is a bit of a cat/dog. She was a gift to my daughter from her aunt on her 16th birthday. How stupid was that? I never liked cats and what teenager will make the commitment to a cat for the cat's lifetime? Luckily my Dalmatian Mickey took to her, he never liked cats either. Now Noel is loved by us all, but she is my cat now, well now my wife's cat I should say. The old girl is 14 and going strong, despite suffering a stroke. She is very happy right now because I have boxes scattered throughout the house as I pack up Christmas. Noel loves Christmas, from the boxes during set up, sleeping under the tree as the trains go by to the boxes again when it's time to put it all away. She has the perfect name, she is my Christmas cat for sure.

Here is a picture of our Noel from this last Christmas Noel in the Window.jpg

My Bessy loved Noel Bessy & Noel.jpg The Beagles are a bit of afraid of Noel but they were so very happy when she came home from the vet after her stroke.

Speaking of putting Christmas away, I have to get back to it, but I'll be back on my next break. I take more breaks then I do work so nothing happens quickly.

I'm very sorry to hear about your loss BigE!
I grew up with animals, cats and dogs, spend the occasional summer holiday on a farm in southern Sweden...
Still hurts as much for each and every loss, never gets any easier....

As they say, they might just be a part of your life, but to them, you're their whole life and they love you unconditionally...

Love my animals, big or small, wild or pet....

Speaking of pets.... 2 of the coolest I ever had was a ferret named "Little Bit" and a squirrel named "Fat Boy".
In the winter time I could stuff the ferret down between my shirt and sweater and she would curl up and sleep. I took her to the bar with me a few times. Once she got all nice and cozy with me, I could take her anywhere.
Fat Boy was just plain old fun as all get out. Talk about playful!!!

Sorry to hear about your loss. We have always had dogs and although we don't treat them like kids, they are part of the family. It's never easy when you loose one. Here's out little herd of doxies, my gopher squad. Living in a rural area, gophers can be a big problem and be quite destructive, but they don't last very long around here.

The one that's upside down is rather spoiled. She's the princess.

E - that's incredible about the squirrel! How exactly did you ever manage to domesticate him?

A friend of mine's sister found him as an abandoned baby and we bottle fed him. He was absolutely fearless. Me and Curtis (my friend) used to play this game with him. We'd stand apart a few feet and get him to jump from my shoulder to his. Then we'd increase the distance on each jump to see far we could get him to go. About 7' was close to max.
Fat Boy was funny. You could lay him on his back in your lap and rub his belly. He'd just lay there and chatter away the whole time. Too funny!!

Jumping around like that, FatBoy probably would have been dangerous in your layout room! :D

How long did he live?

Only a couple years. One of Curtis's dogs got a hold of him one day. Like I said "he was fearless" - unfortunately to a fault. :-(

We had built him a huge place to live and make his own. Basically we screened in Curtis's front porch like a big atrium so he could come and go in and out of the house as he wished. If he wanted in, by God he'd let you know!

Bob-Belated Birthday greetings.

Karl- I sent the Troll image to another forum. Still have the full size on my 'puker.

Good morning to all!
This will be rather short this morning. The spousel unit is after me to get taxes done for 2012. That's right .. 2012, and then 2013. I usually run a couple years behind .. No real reason .. Just hate doing it at all. I just found out that my tax man has a myeloma form of cancer. I have been with him for 40 years! This has come as quite a shock to me as we have become almost brothers over the years .. Both of us are only children. He lives in Ft Myers and usually once a year we try and get together. He told me the other day NOT to come this year as he needed to clear up his practice. Doug indicated to me that he is looking at one to three years .. Maybe!
I have really enjoyed reading about all the pets. My dogs are mostly my life, and I try and work with local rescues around here. It is both sad and rewarding work. Everyone in the extended family have from one to three dogs and quite a few cats as well.
It's 35 as I write, clear skies, and supposed to be 75 for a high .. Same forcast for the next several days.

David .. Enjoyed the tips you expressed .. Some of them most modelers overlook.

Later ...
