Running Bear's Coffee Shop XLIX

ModelRailroadForums.com is a free Model Railroad Discussion Forum and photo gallery. We cover all scales and sizes of model railroads. Online since 2002, it's one of the oldest and largest model railroad forums on the web. Whether you're a master model railroader or just getting started, you'll find something of interest here.

Just returned home an hour or so ago from a heart stress test, done without the need for chemical enhancement, apparently all good 'cause the Doc said "See you again in '17". His confidence was very gratifying. This is a continuing follow up to my quad bypass in '04.

Welcome back Sherrel, your input has been missed, hope all your medical outcomes are at least as good as mine have been. As one who has had almost all of the large bowel removed (just enough to remain connected) and luckily avoided the chemo by the good fortune to be referred by my doctor to a specialist who got the last bit of a tumour out that the original surgeon couldn't. I now get an annual 'look-see' to make sure all stays OK (have had a couple of Polyps removed since). Bowel ops are a big shock to the body and take some time to get over, so look after yourself and don't rush it. Least it shouldn't affect your typing fingers.

Good morning everyone!

59 with only a few stars visible through the clouds in southeast Baltimore.

King Toot I am glad to hear your stress test results were so good! Both you and Sherrel are valuable members of this forum. We are lucky to have so many great people in one place.

Have a great day everybody!

Good morning everyone. 29 and clear up here in the Rockies this morning.

Garry - Sorry to depress you with the pictures. Unfortunately I can remember when this depot and other Milwaukee depots was centers of activity to many small communities. When I have the time I enjoy getting out into the sticks and look at what remains of what was once a great American railroad. Growing up with relatives that worked on the Milwaukee Road and having spent many hours riding its rails, it does hurt me to see what has come of it, but also brings back so many good memories too. Maybe I'm living in the past, but these memories are what got me into model railroading.

Better shut your eyes, here comes another picture. This is what remains of the old Milwaukee Road trestle at Lombard where it cross the Missouri River and the Montana Rail Line tracks (ex Northern Pacific) which are out of sight on this side of the river.

This is where the Milwaukee Road came out of Sixteen Mile Canyon. Ringling where I posted the old depot pictures yesterday was the last depot before entering the canyon. Ringling, which years back did have a number of homes is now not much more than a wide spot on the road along US 89 north of Livingston, MT, but it still has a saloon, pictures below, and a post office.

Good Morning, 54° and sunny this morning. It's allergy season, as the pollen is flying all over the place.

Toot: Great news
Sherrel: Great to have you back, you had quite an ordeal.
Chet: That's an interesting photo of the ROW leaving the Canyon.

Looks like more yard work on tap for today.

Good Morning, we have 45 and overcast, a few drops in the air. We are looking at extreme fire danger up here, there have been several smaller fires in the area. Minnesota bought a bunch of new water tankers (air) and have been deploying them freely.

TOOT glad to hear your test turned out well.

Hi, everyone! It's been a long time since I've posted here but I have managed to check in and do a little reading now and then. I'm sitting in in-processing at Clinton Nuclear Station waiting for them to call my name for my clearance to get into the plant. Got laid off from Braidwood Station Tuesday morning and came down here this morning. I've been VERY busy so far this year, which is a good thing but tends to wear a person out. This will be my fourth refuel outage this year, with at most two days off consecutively..........most of the time it's only been one day off at a time.

After this job I plan on having the summer off and not working til this fall. Then we have a big retube project at a coal burner twenty miles from my house. If all goes well, I'll be able to hit that job for a couple of months. This summer I've got a project planned for an Atlas SD9. I've got an ESU Loksound Micro decoder and a speaker to go into the body after some surgery to the frame to get it to fit. I had the EMD 567 sound file downloaded to it and now I'm waiting for the time to do it. I'll post more about that project as it goes..........hopefully sometime in mid June.

I'll try to get on here once in a while, time permitting. Until then, everyone take care!

Good morning. ...

Bill T ... Have not seen you here but hope you are doing well. Some of your coffee would hit the spot now.
Sherrell ... Glad you are back in the coffee shop.
Chet .... Actually, the pictures are really not depressing, but it is difficult to think of what has happened to some of the old railroads. In particular, I miss rail passenger travel of the pre-Amtrak era.

One of the reasons why I like model railroading is it allows me to simulate the railroads in the pre-Amtrak era.

Some of you may be interested in my kitbashed Burlington observation car.

I started with a Walthers Budd observation car such as this one. .....

I modified a car jsut like the one above to look like the one below. It is now a Diner/Parlor/Observation car called "Silver Fountain" . CB&Q had four of these cars each with its own name. It had side doors with vestibules located in the center of the car. The front half of the car was a dining car. The back half of the car was a parlor car.

Nice pics Garry. I will have to agree with you when you bring up pre Amtrack passenger service. When I was growing up we were regulars on both the Hiawatha and the North Coast Limited. I think I looked forward to the rail trip more than what was going to happen when we got to the destination. Amtrack may be good, but they can't compare with the service that our railroads of the past provided.

Came across another picture. This is Milwaukee Roads power substation 2 between Ringling and Lennep, MT. When we go to visit relatives in Harlowtown we'll sometimes take a slightly longer route and this station is located right along Montana highway 294.

Good morning. I just did a drive by, and the last time Bill was logged in was the tenth, 6 days ago.
I'll shoot a PM to him, and let y'all know the response when I get it.

That could just be a cookie on his machine that hadn't expired yet. Another site I frequent keeps my cookie active and indicates I'm logged in when in reality I hadn't checked it in several days. So unless I explicitly log out no one knows I'm not really around. Of course all that behavior is a combination of a site's programming and individual browser cache settings.

Hopefully, you'll get a response none the less.

Found a picture of an eastbound Hiawatha crossing the trestle at Lombard. The first is the one posted earlier.

Old lombard crossing.jpg

This picture was taken just to the right of the trestle on this side of the river in the second picture.

The bottom picture is a westbound freight along the Clark Fork Rives. It appears to be just east of Saint Regis, MT

Beautiful day in sunny southeast Baltimore. I cut the grass for the first time this year.

Great Pictures Montanan, thank you!

I hope they can keep the fires under control LASM, stay safe my friend. How are you at rain dances? If you are good do one for Sherrel while you are at it. :)

Thanks for stopping by Bob, great to hear from you, we have missed you!

Great work Garry, the rear marker light really adds to the car. I always enjoy pictures of your layout, thank you!

Boris any memories of the B&P junction, the Port Road or the Army Navy specials? I enjoy when you share your experiences.

Thanks Terry, I look forward to hearing about Bill.

Enjoy the rest of the day everybody!

Evening All,

Ran some errands and did some chores today. I plastered the tunnel so tomorrow it should get painted.

BigE- You are doing a nice job on the ground cover.

Montanan- Nice pics.

I hope everyone has a good night.

Thanks Curt. I'm still grinding up dirt batch #2 right now. It's slow going and good for sneeze fits so I only do a little bit at a time. I may be able to put some more down later on.

I did manage to put down the cork that Ken sent me to raise my fueling station to track level. I wouldn't mind getting that part of the yard dirted up so I can start to put things back. This disruption is driving me nuts but needs doing if I'm going to progress.

Well... while I've been typing and swapping off to grinding dirt, I think I have plenty to go with for now.
I'm fixing to go thrown down some more ground cover......

Abundant sunshine. High around 80F. Winds W at 10 to 15 mph.

That's the forcast above .. It's 85 currently with red flag fire warnings posted ... Supposed to be about the same tomorrow.
There is a possibility of some rain in another week? ( yeah .. Sure!)
Jerry Brown is asking that we shower with a friend to conserve water .. I used to try and do that in my younger days with all the flight attendents.. Sometimes it actually worked.

Everyone's posts are so great:
TOOT .. Every day is a new experience when trying to have a BM .. No fun for sure. I have a sister in law who actually had a more serious cancer than I did .. It has been 8 months from her surgery and she is afraid to get more than 40 feet from her bathroom.

Chet .. Beautiful photos!

Louis and Boris .. Thanks for the Baldwin thread. I like that locomotive.

Garry .. Just simply beautiful work ..

Curt .. I'm having a head scratching trying to figure out the short tunnels? Did I miss your explanation?

Terry .. Hope you hear from Bill, tks for asking.

Whew .. U guys are keeping a person busy trying to answer all.

Put some green color in, green. Waiting for pictures.

I will do that as soon as I figure out what I want to do.
I'm kind of liking Curt's business with the portals and tunnels.
I won't buy anything for "real" ground cover until I can put my eyeballs on it - same with track ballast.
I could always get an air-brush and paint on some green if need be. :D

If I don't hear back from Bill in a couple of days, I have a couple more tricks in my toolbox.
