Good morning. Better grab one of those pastries before Garry shows up. A bit cooler this morning at 5 above.

Louis - It seems like you got hooked up with the right people. Best of luck with the new venture. I'm sure that they'll keep you busy.
On the subject of the arm, I too put things off, way too long. I finally listened to my wife (guess I have to admit that she was right) and scheduled surgery. We fining out the last week of the bowling season on Fa Friday, went to a tournament on Saturday and had the surgery on a Tuesday. Had to go through a fair amount of physical therapy during the summer but was right back at it at the beginning of the new league year.

Sherrel - Hoping to hear from you in short order, from home.

Willie - Sometimes it doesn't look like you're making a lot of progress, but taking the time to get everything to fit and operate properly can save some big headaches down the road.

Bruce - You got it right when you say hire a vet. They usually turn out to be our best employees.

Terry - To wear a tire like that on the rear absolutely isn't right. There should be no camber at all. If you have a rigid axle there should be even wear. Something is seriously wrong. Hoping you can get some satisfaction from the dealership. From what you have been saying they seem to want to work with you to some extent. Better than saying that it's your problem.

Eric - You must be sleeping in. Good morning to you when you wake up.

Guess I should get something done.

Later.

Good morning fellers. I hope everyone is doing well. I have a question for B&O fans. I was doing some research last night to see if I could come up with a valid GP9 number. Apparently the B&O renumbered theirs during the Chessie era. So I'm at a loss as the only ones available have a 740 unit number on them. Any advice?

Howdy. Briefly checking in.

Eric ... I'm pleased to read about your good news. Keep up the good work. I

My youngest grandson , age 7, is enjoying his early Christmas present. It is. LEGO high speed passenger train set with extra tracks . He is now a train mechanic. Guess who got him that gift. .

merry Christmas

Wow, Christmas is just about here. Just reading Gary's post made me want to share my son's story when he sat on Santa's lap. When asked what he wanted for Christmas my son said "Lego train". Santa followed by saying you want Lego's and my son replied Train I want a "Lego" Train. Santa made sure the parents heard what our son wanted but we know. The train is already at our home and a got the extra track packs too.

Hate to say, but B&O 740 is a mystical number as far as GP9's go. In the B&O system, 740 was a GP7. GP9's were originally 747-752, later ones were 6426-6598 depending on when they were built, some re-numbering went on as well. This might help.

A better site might be this one.

Thanks a bunch. Looks to me I'll be leaving those alone as well. No wins here in the older geep world for me. If I had the means I would make my own units.

Expanding on what Willie said: B&O #740 was a passenger GP7. I'm guessing you've got a Blue Box unit painted in the early blue-gray-and-black? Athearn called their model a "GP9" but the grille pattern on the hood was that of a GP7.

Have you looked on eBay for any LifeLike-Proto2000 GP7's or GP9's? They can be had for pretty reasonable prices, just need to swap-out the axel gears...

If you like it, buy it! You're the only one who is going to know. Of my 80+ diesels, probably 6-8 have mystical numbers. You can always renumber it later on.
Also expanding on what Ken posted, I don't know whether or not the Athearn unit has a steam generator molded on or not.

Willie, actually it does...trouble is, it would need corrective surgery to eliminate the dynamic brake blister, lengthen the fuel tank, and install the "torpedo" air tanks on top of the hood.

Much easier to get one of these - they have valid #'s for GP9's in the Chessie era, as well as the correct blue-and-yellow freight scheme:

Y'all know exactly what I'm talking about. Ken I love the P2Ks about as much as I love my Athearns. But explaining $100+ dollars for a locomotive is an uphill battle with the misses that I'll most likely lose. It's hard enough explaining $60-$80 for one of my RTR Athearns. Willie you are right. Ain't nobody going to know but me anyways. I should be used to the blemishes of the Blueboxes anyways. I have quite a few. My entire fleet is either Chessie or C&O. I need to mix it up some. I might just get another B&O GP30 from Bachmann. The one I had was an excellent runner. I can't complain about them.

Oooops....my bad! I remembered you were looking at Stewart F units a short while ago so I thought maybe these geeps would be in your league...

GP9s in Chessie era were in the 5900 and 6000 series.

Afternoon All,

Painted the 4 towers and mounted them but I still need to place horns on 2 of them. I made a tactical error today...actually a rookie move. I had just finished painting the towers and they were drying. MOH says I'm going to Walmart and I say I'll go with you!!! What the heck was I thinking?. Two hours later we were back home. Later our skunk family got a Christmas bath. They weren't very happy.

Justin- Nice video. I would think that the B&O historical society would have a online database that you can check.

Sherrel- I hope your surgery went well and are resting at home.

Karl- I hope your truck woes are quickly resolved in your favor.

Willie- Thanks for the photo's. I finally went with the PECO #5's and have had no issue with them. Are you going to add a ladder on both ends? That is something I really wish I had done on my yard for added flexibility. It's too hard now trying to make that work.

Garry- Would it be you?

I hope everyone has a good night.

Good morning fellow Spike Drivers & Gandy Dancer's,
For a very interesting article about Gandy dancers; go to: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gandy_dancer

Hi Flo & Francine, How are you both doing today? Things are starting to look a lot like Christmas here at Jeffreys' Dinner!

A shot of the ladies as I came to know them through Bill Tidler who doesn't seem to be around anymore?

Here is also a shot of Jeffrey Scott Wimberley whom the Dinner is named after. Kindly parden the screen effect over his image, I'm not sure what caused that?

The weather has been quite cold with all the moisture in the air, but the Sun is out and it's nice standing in it when outside.

Here's a shot of a Little Old-Time Square Saddle Tank Teakettle. I added the single air pump, the water filler between the stack and sand dome, I also added the bell and whistle, as the base the whistle is sitting on was a big Cigar shaped thing that was their answer to a whistle.
irpumpaddedenhanced-Reszed964x7231-Jpg_zpsa92a40fb.jpg

I went out into my train room to run a train or two only to find out I had a section of dead rail on outer passing siding at the Horseshoe Meadow Depot, so I carefully moved the wire away from the rail and used an angled mirror on a handle to set behind the rail to see how clean it was and then used a scratch brush that had the bristles somewhat rounded over and just let them extend beyond the end of the barrel end so I could scrub the side of the rail nice and clean so I can go out and re-solder the wire to the rail again which I will do shortly.

I love it when all the ducks lineup in a row!

So I'm a one man show, perking, working and having a ball! I won't get rich, but now I see why UPS can pay union wages and benefits! At my age and health I won't put that much money on the line, too much risk for me. I refuse to use bankruptcy as standard business practice to back up my screw ups. I'll keep it as a one man show.

The best part is it's fun! I get to be Santa delivering presents!!! They send me into the high class neighborhoods in the mid mornings-afternoons and into the inner city in the afternoons-evenings. I get to see first hand everybody is the same.

I could tolerate the sitting when I was in much worse health, but now I seem to be getting better everyday. I dropped 2 pants sizes, but only lost 5lbs. I am regaining some muscle, in my legs for sure!

It's a gift from God, thank you God!

Have Faith; do your best and let God take care of the rest.

God Bless us Everyone!

Say Louis: I feel the same way about being a sole proprietor, the insurance will drain you financially. I also feel the power of prayer is very beneficial and worth while. Although I'm not praying to God or Jesus Christ about every little thing that happens either. Now if I can only get Santa to believe I've been a good guy, ahmm, all year long maybe I'll get some trains rather than the usual lump of coal!

I hope that it's going to be a nice day for everyone. It's 52 and very cloudy (I think-still dark). Going to be 62 they say for a high with scattered showers all day.
We received 5% of our yearly rainfall yesterday and it took me an hour and 45 minutes to drive the 46.7 miles to visit with the anesthesiologist - which I really did not want to do - but it was insisted that I do so. I'm off to the hospital in about an hour and PRAY that I will be back home in better, but sore, shape this afternoon.
Sorry for the short consisted writings this morning. Trying to type this in the dark with only the light of the screen as the Spousal Unit is still asleep next to me on the couch here. ( the dogs have already voiced their dis-approval of the arrangement)

In the words of someone who was very dear to me: I had rather believe in, die, and find out that there is no God than to not believe in, die, and find out that there is! In the words of LOUIS: No need to go further, I'm not an evangelist. Faith should be left to the individual. Faith should be spread by example, not words.

Jesus is the reason for the season, period.

Say Sherrel: I feel everything should turn out OK for you today, sorry I didn't post earlier.

Howdy. Briefly checking in.

Say Garry: I'm surprised to hear Shelly thought to get your youngest grandson the Lego Train rather than you! Well you did say to guess. LoL

I was curious to find out if they are actually powered? They could be easily, even with a simplified hand controller without having to have the tracks powereded. A friend of my belongs to the Dead Rail Society to power his HO locomotives and has a hand throttle with similar functions to my Quest Unit as each Loco has it own decoder in it and i powered by an on board battery so no track voltage is required. It's a direct connection to the receiver then to the motor.

Say Dave: That's really neat, glad to hear he is interested in trains too. Like father, like son! That's great!

I hope everyone has a very Joyous Christmas and Holiday season!

Good evening gang!
Tuesday night was rough. Working in a 40° garage on #5's Jeep til past midnight, getting to bed at 1 a.m. Then back up a 5 for w*rk, then after a full day yesterday i was too pooped to pop last night. I received a Bowser 55 ton WM hopper in the mail Tuesday, and was too tired to open the case and look til tonight! SWMBO knew I was tired seeing that kind of behavior! I've been swinging wrenches on stuff since I was big enough to hold em, but I have never, ever seen something as stupidly put together as a 97 Jeep Cherokee! The way it is assembled makes any job harder than it needs to be! Junk I tell you, designed by Morons! One more reason I love my Chevy!
Oh, and we went live with a new repair order processing software this week, after 2 hours of training. Talk about aggravating! The trainer looked at me on day 3, and asked me what I thought of our new software. In so many words I told him I would rather "pleasure myself" with a handful of bees rather than continue to use his program. The boss is starting to feel the same way.

Eric So glad to hear of your progress beating the monster. Prayers for you continued success, a true Christmas Miracle!

Karl- I hope your truck woes are quickly resolved in your favor.

Methinks you were meaning Terry (yeah, easily confused, since we are both handsome, smart and humorous guys)

Justin As a friend of mine is fond of saying "It's only money, you can always make more!" Yeah, i know i say this while I contemplate putting an advance reservation on a Bowser RS3, due in December 2017 in Western Maryland speed lettering. WMHS members (I am one) can reserve an exclusive "members only " road number 198, with DCC & sound for $210.00 (MSRP $300.00) Yeah, it's only money  Do what makes ya happy.

KenL
, posting during the day? Playing hookey??

Funny you would say that! I was in minor surgery at 1045 (Thursday morn) having a PICC line installed.

I looked that up...and....no....not something you wish for, for Christmas. Reminds me of the 5 goes they had to put in an intravenous line in my upper arm.

Chet I know you are right, 300 game is proof you are right! My problem is and surgery and I have a history of not getting along too well. Blood clot and viral pneumonia from surgery makes me a huge risk to the anesthesiologists The last surgery I had they asked me to sit up in bed all night afterwards, I can never sleep well in the hospital anyway so I did it. Now with kidney disease I guess that will complicate things even more. I graduated from hacking school, it's only pain, I can hack it. As long as I can throw a ball I'm happy :)

Karl you are the man! Well done Dad! I second the love for Chevy, I was always a Ford man, but my east Baltimore cheapness never let me pass on a great deal. After 2 Chevys I haven't bought anything else. Did I mention I love my brilliant Chevy City Express? El Camino, Astro Van, GMC 2500 utility body, Lumina, A little foreign built (Suzuki I think) Chevy, Malibu and now the City Express and Sonic. ALL fantastic!!! That's not counting the Chevys my kids bought, Impala, Camaro, 2 Malibu, 2 Cruze , Envoy and Equinox. My kids get bored quick, but all the cars were FANTASTIC!

If my experience with Point of sale software is of any use, I'd say your software troubles will only get worse before getting better. The geeks know computers, but they don't know the automotive business. You are going to need a tech support number my friend, good luck with that.

Funny you would say that! I was in minor surgery at 1045 (Thursday morn) having a PICC line installed.
