Shoot I know I would take the easy route and buy up a life like stock pen myself for my layout. I actually had one once upon a time. Way before I decided to model coal operations.
Good morning, America! It's 33° and raining with wind gusts up to 50 MPH. My wife was taking her cousin to Springfield for chemo and was worried about the freezing rain, so she asked if I would drive. We are at the mall now, passing time til her cousin is ready.
Nice cattle pen, Chet. I'm going to order a Chopper II from MB Klein with part of my gift certificate. I want to build a wood vehicle bridge to go over the tracks and the only way to get what I want is to build it myself.

That's what I did here, spliced two kits together. The old eyes aren't as good as they were twenty five or so years ago then the first stock pens were build. One does learn through experience.
Bob - those choppers are great. I think mine is over 30 years old. Love it.
OH .... GASP!!!
Chet, is that a gravel road crossing the turnout I see.
I'm being sarcastic of course.
I shouldn't talk anyway. I don't have an inch of road of any type here yet.
Doesn't really matter since I only have a single truck as far as vehicles go.
E.
This will be a paved road to the other side of the crossing. These were tracks that had to be torn out and replaced due to poor planning. I'll finish it some day.
The rain is back and in full force.
They are leaving the flood watches in effect from 1300 earlier today until sometime on Thursday.
Never heard of them doing that before.
We've already had lots of rain over the past 2 weeks as it is.

Eric - That's the same storm system that dumped over 5" of rain on me between 2000 Saturday and 0400 Monday. Parts of our area are still under flood warnings, although not flash floods any more. You no doubt have heard of the tornados that hit Rowlett & Garland TX about 75 miles SE of me. I told you it was coming your way!
Update on this morning's post: I cleaned and lubed two Kato GP35's that had been stored in a box for 6 1/2 years. Found all of the parts and reassembled with a crew in the cab of one of them. They run very well as expected.
OK, it's time to prepare supper...I'm making homemade marina sauce to go on some cheese/mushroom ravioli. See you all in the morning.

Got my friend moved today, it only took 2 truck loads. Hot again today and the feel like temp tomorrow is supposed to be 92 F but thankfully cool down this weekend to the 60's. I can't wait. The weather guy said so far in December only 2 days have been below average and the rest well above the average.
Chet- Nice Photo.
Chessie- I know it is extremely frustrating because I have been there, but when it is finally right it is magic!
Our internet service was restored late today. ....
Tomorrow, we begin our northern trip from western Kentucky to Ohio and Michigan. .... We waited until tomorrow because Winter Storm Goliath would have made it challenging if we went today. So, I'll be brief again. ...... Happy New Year. .. See you next year.
Good evening everyone,
Hi Flo & Francine, It good to have a nice warm place like Jeffreys' Dinner to come into on these cold days. Have you got a nice warm bowl of Hobo stew maybe? You do, great, I have a large bowl of it, thanks and coffee of course. Here's my $5.00 dollar tip because I missed tipping either of you over Christmas. Well New Years is approaching fast.

On the C&S West SL scene: Sometimes the obvious isn't all that clear or at least it's overlooked thinking it won't really make that much difference yet it's cause of the problem, at least in some instances. What I'm referring to is the last RH Curved turnout I placed on the upper line just prior to what will be the RH straight #5 turnout leading to my Coal Mine. When I build these turnouts the templates are on a piece of plywood so everything is laying flat. The location of the curved turnout straddled a joint of the the subroad bed sound board [SB] and it appeared the prior section of SB was higher than the the new section it adjoined when both should have been the same height as the bench work was even. So my thought was to shim-up the adjoining section which is my passing siding area as well as where the Coal Lead will take off. So I unscrewed the four short Drywall screws that secured the SB to the OSB base, cut one shim and inserted the shim and screwed the four screws down again. Tested it out, it seemed better but I still had problems trying to back a stiff under frame bobber caboose through it. Checked it out further and realized the rail spacing between the outer Stock Rail [SR] and the Point rail when set to go straight through needed to be closed up a bit and did that but still the problem of derailing happened with the stiff frame bobber caboose but not as often. I had noticed that the shims created a bit of a hump coming off the switch as well as that the outside rail was raised up a bit as I just generally had the turnout tacked down so
to speak but not really very securely. Then I realized that the shims were creating a hump when I put a 10" level on top of the stock rail and frog area. I also noted the the stock rail was sticking up more than it should be so I pulled out the two shims I had placed under the SB and began spiking the SR down better but still temporarily to again test it out.
*That's all it took as I also stated getting some wood ties glued under the switch near the frog area also to spike it down properly after a few tests and seeing that the SF Bobber now backed through just fine!
So the whole issue was just that the switch SR was sticking up a bit high due to not being spiked down properly. A simple fix too easily over looked by not realizing the slight bit of difference in rail height was causing all the problems. Live and learn.
I hope everyone has a good night and day tomorrow!
Good morning, America! It's 31° in Forgotonia with cloudy skies and winds around 15 MPH. Better than yesterday, which was very rainy and wind gusts were up to 54 MPH. Flooding was a problem in low areas and there were power outages in many areas. Our power was off for close to an hour and north of us, they had up to 1/4 inch of ice with the strong winds and they don't expect to get the power on in some areas til tomorrow morning. At least the temps aren't down to zero!
Joy, joy, I've got my dentist appointment for my six month check up this morning. Hope that goes well. I'll be 61 in a couple of weeks and I've still got teeth to worry about so I guess that's a good thing.
Good Morning All. Clear and 29 degrees here to start the day. High will be around 50, same for the next 5 days and then a gradual warm-up to 58 by Monday. Pretty much normal for this time of year. Snow from yesterday was all gone by 10:00 am. Now it needs to dry-out from all the rain Saturday night/Sunday. Hopefully sooner than later as I need to get the garden in shape for planting by late-January. I've already spread compost and leaves, now it just needs tilling. We have two growing seasons here, January-June and September-November. The only things that grow in the heat of July-August are peanuts, sweet potatoes and okra. Tomatoes and peppers survive but don't bear any fruit; that is if you keep everything watered! David - Been there, done that.
Well off to the train shed for a few hours before we make the weekly 50 mile round trip trek to the grocery store and wherever else the wife desires. Beer supply is getting low, so I'll pick up a few cases. I will stop at Home Depot for a new flush lever for one of our toilets. One broke yesterday and I have jury-rigged it for now. It may last ten years or ten days, you never know. I remember when my favorite store was Victoria Secrets; now it is Home Depot!
Good morning and salutations. 15 degrees to start the day off with some light snow which is forecast to be with us for the next few days. Is it spring yet ???
Louis - glad to see you aboard again.
Bob - Sounds like mother nature is slapping you around. Guess staying home would be a good idea with ice all over the place.
Garry - have a safe trip. Looking at the radar, it's clearing a bit where you are but things could get dicey as you move north.
Willie - Enjoy your weekly trip. Home Depot put quite a dent in my wallet last summer with all of the renovations we did but it should all be paid off in a month or two. We had gotten rid of all of out credit cards with the exception of an American Express card, but Home Depot was offering special deals on appliances if they were bought using their card. Can't wait to get it paid off so I can cancel it. By all means, get some beer. Can't have you running out of that.
Here's my photo for today. It's a busy day at the freight station.
