Well, howdy there internet subjects and those admiring Willie's ability to count BTUs from downed trees.

It's Troy again.

No booms in this area, other than thunder this morning.

Today is the third day of the Three Rivers Festival here in the fort. We have two rivers, that merge into a third.

(I don't count the third, it's the same two rivers, but those who name rivers disagree.)

Anyway. Wife was supposed to go with her sister to the fesitval, and tour the Sidewalk Art Gallery. Artists bust out the chalk starting on Friday, and take a large section of one of the plaza's for their art. They're very good at it.

Unfortunately, this morning our fair city got over half an inch of rain. I suspect the art is long gone. And with the heat into the low 90s, and very muggy, wife is trying to beg off. Next weekend looks to be low 80s with lower humidity. Of course, the chalk art will be long gone.

I had to print up some more cyclops parts for my Thunderstruck Band of Cyclops to help the orcs out. And I printed some more balloons for the Dystopian halfling Mad Max army.

Not sure what I'll end up doing this afternoon. Painting, or trying to bend into the crevices and try to get the last of the two loops laid on the layout. I'm only working on foam risers at this point. But once they're in, I'll be able to see I need to adjust the risers anywhere else. After that is complete, I'll start with the plaster cloth, then the track laying.

But, first, I need to run the shark around the basement. No, the cat always hides. He must be worried about getting eaten by the shark, but maybe he's concerned about being electrocuted instead. He does like to chew on cords. But not beagle levels of chewing.

I do not like macaroni and cheese! The only way I like any kind of pasta is smothered in meat sauce that has so much meat that everything tastes like meat.

Bread is good for one thing, holding the meat together in a sandwich and it keeps the mayonnaise off my hands!
I like Mac & Cheese when it's real mac & cheese. Not that add powdered cheese stuff to boiled noodles, but baked in an oven with real cheeses mac & cheeses. I also prefer my spaghetti without marinara . Buttered noodles with melted or shredded parmesan cheese on top is good by me.. I also prefer white pizzas over traditional pizza, but I will eat both.

Bread is optional unless there is a sandwich involved.

Meatsauce is good as long as it's real meat, not that plant based stuff. But then again I guess it's all plant based when you get right down to it. Cattle + plants (grass, grains, etc) = real meat.😁

Good Morning All. Clear and 74° out on the porch this morning. Forecast is mostly the same, hot and dry, although the NWS has thrown thunderstorms into the mix for Thursday, Saturday and Monday...they'll probably be removed as we get closer to those days. Still waiting for that elusive triple-digit day that they have been forecasting for a month now!

Another working day on the estate yesterday, as planned I finished mowing the east side but I did not get the back yard yet. Pool was just too inviting! Emptied a wagon load of brush from Friday's cleanup and then cut and loaded another week's worth of firewood. This time from a large 40' Honeylocust tree that I planted 43 years ago. By my rough guesstimate, I will get at least 7 weeks of firewood out of this tree. It's second only to the Hackberry from earlier this week in BTU's/cord of the different trees that I have. Bur Oak is a close third. Photo below taken the morning after the tornado.View attachment 194098
It's the tree on the right. The one on the left I haven't attacked yet, here's a different view.
View attachment 194099
Not much different today except the leaves are fallen and one large branch has been removed.

The two trees were side by side, the one that I am cutting was completely demolished, the other has parts still standing, but probably won't last but a couple more years due to the damage.

More of the same today, but less of it. Today is supposed to be the day of rest! Oh! And the grilled steak last night was perfect. Skipped the potato salad and had raspberries along with the coleslaw and sauteed mushrooms/onions. A perfect low-carb meal.

Out in the train shed yesterday, I fixed the section of warped trackage. It's been in place for 5 years now without any issues, and as I posted yesterday, the main line that parallels it was not affected. I used the Dremel to put a 1/16" gap in each rail. Took longer than expected but it worked as planned. It was complicated by the fact that the 2.5" track section that I worked on had feeders soldered to it. I didn't take a before picture so I didn't feel that it was worth taking an after one.
Other than that, I repaired two more scenery spots with ground foam.
Here are a few barn pictures from the archive in commemoration of National Barn Day today.

Tom O - It will be interesting to find out what those fish were. Especially if there was one that you liked. I only enjoy eating salt water fish myself.
Troy - Pasta is my downfall. I can limit potatoes to once a week or less, rice to maybe once a month, but pasta and Italian bread, forget it! I don't eat desserts to make up for it.
That Breaking News Consumer's Handbook is just so, so spot-on.

Today is both National Barn Day, and National Mac & Cheese Day. I've posted the barns above, you're responsible for your own Mac & Cheese.
Have a great Sunday today.

Willie!

Chilean Seabass, pan seared

Ah yes! I have had that before. Yummy! A friend used to get it for us at the Omaha Steaks store that he managed, using his employee discount. It's available at our Kroger occasionally, but you need Bill Gates food budget to get it there.

Good evening. It's raining hard and 75.
The last week and a half have been busy here. I moved to a better spot, with a storage building, and have been migrating "stuff" into it. One of the things I moved was the sleeper sofa that was under the train layout. Since I did that, I've been able to pull the layout away from the wall, and do some track work. There is one spot, naturally in the farthest corner away from the front, where some locomotives would randomly derail. Today I found there was a combination kink and vertical curve in the rails on the curve just before the turnout in the back corner. After an afternoon of futzing with it, I have most of my equipment operating reliably through that area.

I like Mac & Cheese when it's real mac & cheese. Not that add powdered cheese stuff to boiled noodles, but baked in an oven with real cheeses mac & cheeses.
I'm told my late sister Cathy made the best baked macaroni and cheese. Every year she brought a big tray to our 4th of July parties. It was always gone quickly! She would also bring a tray of sausages and peppers. She knew I'm not a fan of pasta and she didn't want to see me eat hotdogs all day. I never asked anyone to bring anything, and most didn't, but not Cathy, she could not come empty-handed.

Most of my family are pasta eaters. My late sister Theresa ate pasta like I eat hotdogs, a lot! My Nephew from my other sister, Cathy is the same he loves pasta. He has Theresa's blond hair and blue eyes too, but he is built like me. It's strange how that goes.

I also prefer my spaghetti without marinara . Buttered noodles with melted or shredded parmesan cheese on top is good by me.. I also prefer white pizzas over traditional pizza, but I will eat both.
Not me, nothing goes better with meat than tomatoes, I love tomatoes!

Bottom line; to each his own. It is good everybody likes something different. Otherwise, I might have to fight for my hotdogs, and they wouldn't be so cheap!

Meatsauce is good as long as it's real meat, not that plant based stuff. But then again I guess it's all plant based when you get right down to it. Cattle + plants (grass, grains, etc) = real meat.😁
That is an interesting take on it, I never thought of it that way. 🤪

Only you Karl, you always add a unique/humorous perspective on things. That's why we love you buddy!

I was glad to hear you take good care of yourself.

I don't like Italian sausage, hot or mild!

I love polish sausage in spaghetti sauce! I know, I'm strange. The problem is I haven't found anyone else who likes polish sausage in spaghetti sauce. I still make it occasionally, then I eat it as leftovers for three consecutive days.

I need to learn how to make smaller meals.

I'm fussy about meatballs too. I make my own homemade meatballs. I use either ground beef or ground beef mixed with ground pork. All beef is best with brown gravy. Pork and beef are best in tomato sauce.

My wife's Hungarian meatballs (Fasirt) are the best! But I only eat them with tomato salad. That is a better meal than hotdogs. Yes, I said that!

I think I may have too many rules about what I eat. Strange for a man loves hotdogs.

Another of my rules; there must be leftovers. I will never again walk away from the table hungry. Been there, done that. I will never do that again!

Going hungry as a child changes a person. One of my sisters was a food hoarder. Her pantry was always overstocked. My other sister (to use Willie's phrase) had a "Bill Gates food budget". Both were wasteful in my mind. Me, I used to eat as much as I could whenever I could. I didn't waste anything, but it was another of many factors in my haste to self-destruction. I finally got off that path.

Life is good, thank God.

I love Mac and Cheese. I don't care if it's "real" home made, or the boxed stuff, though I am a bit picky there -- the real Kraft cheese powder and their fake macaroni are better than most of the boxed... For a quick lunch the Kraft cannot be beat, though I usually will dress it up a little with a handfuyl of real cheese added. Just Friday I think it was I made a box and had it with a can of chili on the side as a real quick supper....

I like to make my own as well. A long while back I bought a couple boxes of food service cheese powder for use for emergency food storage. A box of orange cheddar and a box of white "cheddease" powder. As that stuff eventually goes bad I've been using it up along the way and so I often make my own Mac and Cheese using a blend of these two powders, butter, milk, and a good amount of whatever cheese I have on hand. This past time I used Cream Cheese, a couple cups of Mexican blend, some "real" parmesan (not the Kraft powder stuff), a couple slices of Provolone, and a half dozen slices of Kraft American cheese slices (not real cheese I know but it has a good melty cheese consistency and taste for certain kinds of foods). I always make a bag Garofalo pasta of some sort (that is the Italian pasta that Costco carries and is quite good) and use my cheese sauce as mentioned above, usually with a small amount of garlic powder and smoked paprika added, with it. It turns out usually pretty good. I like it and the family likes it.

On the house front, we had a disaster strike last night (Saturday night), around 11pm. I've been trying to get the driveway poured. We're putting a snow melt system in using hydronics (water tubes embedded in the concrete) and I had it all ready at the beginning of this past week except for one run that was meant to go under the sidewalk and cover the section of driveway between the sidewalk and the curb. And I still needed to add the steel reinforcement. At the beginning of the week the curb cutters showed up and dug out that strip between the sidewalk and the curb (but they didn't cut the curb until Wednesday and the steel mesh (welded wire mesh) didn't show up until around Thursday and they sent me rolls :( instead of panels like I had for the basement. Anyway, Tuesday morning my advisors said that the city may have special requirements for the driveway approach (as they called the part of the driveway in the strip between the sidewalk and curb) and may not even allow the tubing in it (as that land is technically city land even though we're responsible for building and maintaining it). So they put in a call to the city Tuesday before noon and I still have not gotten an answer back. So we were just kind of in a holding pattern all week waiting to hear back from the city so that I could get the very last tube run installed, and then put the wire mesh in and get the concrete guys here.

Well, Saturday night I was at the house putting a tung oil based wood sealant on our bamboo floating vanity tops so that this coming week I could get the multi day final wood finish applied to them and then get the sinks permanently installed and be ready for the finish plumbers to hook them up. The wife had been there helping and had left to go pick up the daughter from work around 10:15pm or something and had called me that it was kind of pretty windy and she was concerned. I couldn't hear much wind and we'd hand windy days before and the foam insulation panels and tubing had weathered it. So I continued my wood sealing and said when I had a chance I'd check. Within about 20 min the outside temperature had gone down enough I could open the windows upstairs and in some of the downstairs rooms to cool the house off as the cooling system is not yet fully installed and the termperature does go up a few degrees each day in the house (with it being 90s-100s outside). I looked out and everything looked normal withe the driveway while I did the windows.

I was still working with the bamboo tops and the sealant and I noticed a bunch of wind noises from outside (form the roof mainly -- you don't hear a lot of outside noise with the house unless the windows are open but you do hear weather on the roof including wind). I thought that when I cam to a stopping point (the sealant had specific drying and buffing times) I'd go check and then the doorbell rang. I went to the front door and glanced out the window as I got to the door and all the foam panels were gone and the neighbor (wife) was there telling me the wind had blown everything away. A micro burst type gale force wind had come and was still there another 10 minutes before a lull and then another 10-15 minutes of strong wind. Anyway I ran out with her, opened the garage and she and I started trying to get all the piled up panels out of the yard and into the garage. Her husband came out and started helping and I called my wife and the wife and daughter came up. They had found our panels down the street a-ways and so they drove around and got a few cars worth of panels that had blown up to a half dozen or more houses away. The neighbor had his BIL come over, who lives in the cul-de-sac down the street and across the cross street and together they drove around the neighborhood and got a couple trucks worth. And we got all the panels cleaned up that had blown up and away on my yard and the neighbors yard. The tubing was just lying in a jumble.

Hopefully we were able to get all the panels -- I posted on Facebook to the two groups associated with our neighborhood about it and said if anyone finds these panels to let me know or bring the by and there was a single panel tonight when I went to open windows lying in the driveway with a rock so someone found it and brought it by.

Tomorrow I will start untangling tubing and get started re-kaying the panels and redoing the tubing. Because the tubing has already been cut to length I neeed to do a good job at laying it pretty much the same as we had already laid it... It's going to be a long week. I'm emailing my boss tonight that I'll mostly be out the next few days while I deal with this. Needless to say the driveway concrete pour is indefinitely postponed.

Here is the driveway a couple days ago -- all ready except the final run. In this pic the curb is not yet cut -- which happened Wednesday I think -- but the foam panels and tubing were the same as they were on Saturday when the disaster struck.

IMG_5330.jpeg

Here it is after the wind had come through and blown it all up and away. This is AFTER the wind had died down adn we'd picked up all the panels and put them in the garage (where you can see them). But you can see the tangled tubing etc and a small section of panels with the tubing still laid on it that just shifted a little -- we piled rocks on it and left it for later cleanup since it was a good section of panels and tubing still in place and I didn't want to bother with it at midnight.

IMG_5350.jpeg

In other house news, this week I had laid the panels and the tubing, with the help of my wife, on teh back porch/sun-room, and then Friday and Saturday had laid out the rebar reinforcement for it, and then tied it together using zip ties to keep the rebar in place. Luckily that is in an enclosed porch are and between the house and walls partially protecting it and the rebar grid sitting on it, nothing happened it to.

Here is the back porch (partial). You can see the panels and tubing and rebar. I just have to install the rebar "chairs" to lift it up into the middle of the concrete instead of lying directly on top of the foam and tubing... The porch is bigger but I did not get a whole porch shot. I actually took this pic to text a guy to ask where I need to put the slab sensor in for the radiant before pouring the concrete...

Going hungry as a child changes a person. One of my sisters was a food hoarder. Her pantry was always overstocked. My other sister (to use Willie's phrase) had a Bill Gates food budget. Me, I used to eat as much as I could whenever I could.

I'm an equal opportunity eater. I'm not generally picky. There are things I'd rather not eat if I have a choice (Okonomiyaki is one -- so called Japanese pancakes though they really have nothing to do with what westerners call pancakes --- I'll eat them but if there is other food I'll choose that instead). but in general I'll eat anything except beets. I don't know why but I cannot abide beets. They're probably good and if they're made in a way I don't know what they are they're probably fine. I must have had a traumatic experience with beets as a kid (that I don't remewmber).

So any sort of pasta, pasta sauce, meatball, cheese, etc is fine with me. Some I think are better than others but that does not hold me back. As I explained above, I even like boxed Mac and Cheese though most "real" Mac and Cheese recipes are preferable.

My kids are a bit more picky. Probably because they've always had enough and to spare and could afford to be picky. When I was a kid you ate what was given you... Though my kids are getting better and as grade school kids were the only young kids I've known that liked sushi (raw fish sorts) etc. (But there are other perfectly normal things they don't like <SMH>)

Kraft cheese powder and their fake macaroni are better than most of the boxed
My gourmet cook, Hungarian wife with a distain for most "boxed" American foods loves Kraft macaroni and cheese! The cheap stuff with powder cheese or the one with cheese sauce. She mixes in frozen broccoli when the pasta is cooking.

My grandson Ayden prefers the one with powder cheese and loves it with broccoli. It's amazing how much his taste for foods is like his Nagyi (Hungarian for grandmother). He has been eating spicy foods since he was a little boy. I never ate anything spicy until I was 18!

Both my wife and grandson only eat Kraft macaroni and cheese.
