Hello from the Cheese State! 61f degrees now and 83 later. Possible rain chances keep getting pushed back, instead of this afternoon our best chance today is after 11pm. The smoke haze scheduled for yesterday did not show up.

The trip to see Moma Rosa (troll) yesterday was a last minute decision. Today at 1:45 we will go see the latest Spider-Man Movie then at 7:10, a stop at Michael’s Crafts, dinner at Jason’s Deli and finally this evening the grandson plays hockey.

Good Morning All. Clear and 71°. Still in the triple-digit forecast mode, although it only made 99° yesterday. As expected, the NWS has removed that minute chance of rain from Friday's forecast.

Can't stay long this morning, since I have a routine follow-up visit at the ophthalmologist's office this morning at 8:15...means leaving here at 7:40. At least I don't have to deal with school traffic yet. My wife set this ungodly appointment time before she realized that she would have to go along since they're going to dilate my eyes and she would have to drive home!

Did some stuff out in the train shed yesterday, mainly figure painting. Four more colors and six more figures into the "finished container". I next need to spray them all with Dull Coat to protect the color and remove the shine; I have 31 ready.

Chet - I did always wonder about that wrecker, knowing your modeling era, but thanks for it. As you probably already know, I am a huge fan of figures bringing life to a layout. I have over 1300 now.

Got to go now and take meds before leaving. Everybody have a great Tuesday.

(I spent 5 months in 1987 in Landshut, Lower Bavaria, and 1991-1993 I spent 18 months just outside of Landshut and worked in Munich).

But Michael is right. If you've learned High German in school, and basically heard standard High German in your studies, when you first listen to Bavarian, or Schwäbisch (SW German) inspired German you'd be lost. Until you learn the trick I mention above. Listen for the "root word" in each sentence. Words that only exist in those dialects you probably won't be able to know / guess it. Most people don't speak pure dialect, but rather speak some form of "standard German" with their local accent and local dialectal words. I eventually was able to learn to do a reasonably good job of understanding Schwäbisch or related in Stuttgart or Bavarian in Bavaria.

For example. "Ganga mah" is the same s "Gehen wir". ("Let's go") In the south "wir" tends to be pronounced "mir" or "miah". (kind of like a Boston version). The past tense of "gehen" is gang. Ich gang zur Bibliothek gestern. (I went to the library yesterday). But basically "gang" is a root of "gehen". So you hear "gang" and you know they are talking about gehen or "to go". There are a lot of other examples where you can suss out what is being said using the rule "listen for the root".

I got pretty good at listening to and understanding it.

There are a lot of fun videos on YT where someone travels around Germany and asks people to say certain sentences. Or asks them certain questions. And you get the whole range of German dialectal pronunciations.

I watch an afternoon show (morning here) called 'Wir in Bayern' on BR Fernsehen. Nearly each episode they have a reporter and crew somewhere in München asking random passersby what a certain word means. So far, I've not seen anyone get a word correct. It's either very old German or it's Bavarian. After six or seven people on the street fail to figure out what the word means, a linguistics professor explains the origin, root, and any compounding done to the word.

70°F/68° here so far. Expected to hit 90°F in the Lou, but should only be around 86°-88°F here. This is probably the last day for windows open. The A/C has been off since last Wednesday. I'm hoping my power bill reflects the break in the A/C use. Rain on Thursday.

Planning a trip we're going to take as I have vacation time I need to burn. Apparently my fall scared the wife a lot more than me.

Fairview 0 growth, cause now 'Human', 72 responders, 0% contained.

Not Spo - near confluence of Lake Roosevelt ( Columbia River ) and Spokane river.
Mitre Rock ~3800 total, no cause, has grown ~2300 acers in last 24. 53 responders. 0% contained.
Modrite ( North of Mitre Rock ) ~51000 total, cause 'Natural', grown ~1200 in last 24, 681 responders, 16% contained
Hudspeth ( across the Lake ) ~5300 total, cause 'unknown' ~1100 in last 24, 64 responders 0% contained.
Still a couple of smaller fires, everything unknown, probably grass fires.

Near us:
Skillet Fire has grown ~1100 acres, no cause yet, 298 responders. 0% contained.

Gawd: Not quite LA yet, Autumn Lane, Old Trails are in populated areas, Autumn Lane newer *spendy* houses 1 to 2+ acre lots, Old Trails mostly 40/50's houses, 1/2 acre lots. Fairview mostly farm houses except for the SouthWest corner - 50/60's houses on 1/4 acre lots if that.

VA has placed patients around the town where they could. Have 4 major hospitals: St. Mary's, Deaconess, Sacred Heart and Spo Valley General; overflow is in local shelters: what ever that means.

Scrambled eggs, two pancakes, and three strips of actual pork bacon.

Doctor is switching me today to rent oral antibiotic and they have disconnected all the IVs. My leg is feeling better even though it does look like hell. The way they’re talking. I just make it sprung out of the joint today.

We've also got it rough right below you in OR. The smoke is thick enough here in the Willamette Valley to keep the temps about 5 degrees cooler. Still in the mid 90's through Friday with low humidity. The AQI at 7am is 124 and they expect it to be 175 this afternoon.

2 million acres have burned so far in 2026, surpassing the previous record of 1.93 million acres in the 2024 season. As of Monday morning, there are 48 still-active wildfires impacting 1,593,379 acres,
 


Morning All! 76 in the Brew City this morning, going to 83 with rain this evening. Nice to see the forum seems to be back on its meds!. It got a bit frustrating there for a couple of days. A quiet couple of days since the weekend. Moving stuff around the house, getting rid of things we no longer need or that have been replaced by newer or updated things (recall that bedroom furniture). Space is opening up in the garage and the guest room. Not as much progress in the basement as I'd prefer, but we're getting there slowly! Very slowly! I did some backbone ribs on the grill Sunday, and some hot dogs. Fresh corn from the local produce stand, and the wife made potato salad. We're set for lunches and dinners for a few days. I got the grass cut yesterday, first time in a few weeks what with the lack of rain. Much of the lawn is still dormant, but there was enough growth to require a mow. On the list for today: I found an RPO Baggage I wanted at Brass Trains, and got it for cheap. The bad news: it needs Daylight paint. Hope I have enough striping! I'll know soon. Off to the blasting booth! Enjoy your day.

Won't know which one until he gets back. Gonna try again for Lunch with G'niece Emma today. This morning's chore involves filling the hummingbird feeder.
Karl prayers you are better enough to go home today.
I think I'm gonna need to hunt up another tender for a Bachmann 2-8-0 I got yesterday, it came without one and runs well, but I need to get a tender for it. I have an old Vanderbilt style one from one of the old Bachmann 2-8-2s, but it looks a little big for the engine. What are your opinions?

It’s not bad at all. A lot of consolidations had their tender switched out later in their careers anyway so I’m sure somewhere there’s a prototype for it.

A six wheel tender on a 2-8-0 is a bit large. Never say never in railroad land, but I've never seen that done. Six wheelers started to appear on heavy Pacifics and above on the SP. There are smaller vandy tenders out there. I'd recommend looking around, but it's your railroad, and sometimes I put on the Prototype Police hat too much. 😁

On this day in 1993, White Sox third baseman Robin Ventura charged the mound at Arlington Stadium after Nolan Ryan hit him in the shoulder with a pitch. The 46-year-old Ryan caught him in a headlock and threw a flurry of punches.

Lots to do today. Gotta get garbage together and to the dumpster. A lot of cardboard boxes need to go also........a subtle reminder of how much I spend on e-bay and Amazon. Maybe some layout time.

I made an offer on these and got em.......

Cotton Belt FT's! Nice. Unpowered B unfortunately, but they are a blank canvas. You can add as much or as little detail as you want, and the Kato drive has been equaled but never surpassed IMHO.

The short Bachmann Spectrum vandy tenders are hard to find these days and are expensive when you do. A Bachmann short USRA tender should be fine. I have purchased some "non running" Spectrum locos from e-bay for a reduced price just to get the tender.
