We just experienced an ER visit. Sunday my wife was complaining about a pain in her hip, but couldn't pinpoint the pain. By Tuesday morning she couldn't stand or walk on the right leg, but sitting or laying down there was nothing. Again, she tried to press and find the exact pain point and nothing was found.
We hit the ER Wednesday am. When they found out she had previously been treated for osteomyelitis they started to get active. They brought an Infectious disease doc in. MRI with contrast, blood work, blood cultures, etc were ordered. White and red blood cell counts came back normal. No fever. Odd for a possible blood infection. MRI of the thoracic, lumbar, and pelvic region were normal, but for a "lesion" on the top of her right femur.
They wanted to biopsy the lesion, but there was no-one qualified at the hospital to do this type of bone biopsy. The attending doc called over to the local medical school, Oregon Health Sciences University, and spoke with a orthopedic oncologist (also assistant head of the orthopedics dept). He requested a CT scan and xrays before determining if Nicki should be transferred to his facility.
After seeing all the imaging reports he asked if she was on Fosamax. She has been on it for going on 5 years for post menopausal bone loss. He stated she does not have bone cancer or an infection. The lesion is an extremely rare side effect he has only seen several times in his career caused by long term use of that med.
We left the hospital after 12 hours. Nicki has to use a walker to get around. Thankfully we have a single story home. I'm doing what is expected of me to do the things she can't. We are scheduled to meet with that orthopedist Tuesday to discuss treatment.
It's not bone cancer or a blood infection. We can deal this.
