Well, howdy there internet peeps, and those with ball bats
It's Troy again.
You know how when you get a used home, someone else's pet might have used a spot for their business, and they do a good job of covering it up... but eventually your pet figures it out, and they add to it?
That's the landing in the stairway to the basement. On wet spring days when the basement slab was feeling damp, I could get a whiff of pet urine on that landing. Well, it wasn't an issue until this spring. I actually caught our cat (he's 11) squatting on the landing. So, for the past two weeks I've been pulling back the wall to wall carpeting. They did a good job. the carpet is quality, as was the pad. Both coated to stop liquid spills from seeping through.
Of course, the smell come up where the tack strips were. They penetrate the backing on the carpet, and there is no foam padding where the tack strip is.
Two weeks of pet odor removal, paying special attention to the tack strips, and I gave up.
That's after pulling the carpet and pad, removing the tack stips, and spending half an hour on my knees with side cutters to pull the staples. Broom swept it three times. Vacuumed it with the shop vac, then the shark stick vacuum.
then I started with the Kilz stain and odor blocking paint. I'll put a second coat on the back half in a short while, then do the other half before bed tonight.
Tomorrow I'll go get a couple boxes of Vinyl Plank flooring and some foam underlayment. Vinyl should be easy clean, and easy to notice if the cat is still using it.
I grumped at him enough, and praised when he used the box. Speaking of, the Litter Robot Pooping Palace is right under that landing. So the geography made sense to him. And with the other animal odors waking up in the spring, it must be OK, right!
So, more work for me tomorrow.
