My evening... Bulleit Bourbon (not the rye) and some Tony Koester wisdom on multideck design.

I *Might* be able to work a helix in if I do as I'm inclined (pun intended) and rearrange the basement per my last post or two.

Trust me, N Scale will handle steeper grades better than HO Scale. I can't speak for other scales but that I do know having transitioned from HO to N.
With three peninsula's potential in the new layout, and a 16 ft back wall run, I bet I could get a 16 inch rise just with a No-lix 4inch rinse every 8 feet.

I'll noodle on track plans tomorrow.

Mainline on one flat level with no grade, and the line to 2nd deck on a rising climb (6'+ 6'+ 6'+ 6'+ 6'+ 16=46+ feet) hmmm....

Troy - I am not saying that N Scale will handle a 4% grade easily, only that N Scale will handle steeper grades better than HO will. I don't know what you intend to run but to be more than honest with you - I wouldn't go over a 3% grade. Just me though :)
3" of rise per 8ft then

I have a total of 10 cars right now for freight, and three passenger. Passenger would probably stay on lower level.

My weekend is going to be spent reading Tony Koester's book on Multideck layouts

Yep - 3" up for every horizontal 8' :)

Obviously, there are a few things that you have to factor in when determining your max grade. How many cars you will be pulling and what engines will be pulling them. How many engines will be pulling them as well.

These are not "strict figures" but lets say one engine (an SD90 for example) can pull 30 freight cars easily on the flat. It might then only pull 20 freight cars on a 2% grade and then only 10 on a 3% grade. Add another SD90 and your back to pulling 30 freight cars on a 3% grade :)

As said - they are imaginary figures just as an example :)

Adding to that is the rolling resistance from track curvature. That same SD90 that could pull 10 cars on a straight incline can only pull 7 on a tight curve and 3% grade.

Well, howdy there internet peeps, and those pulling cars up a 3% grade

It's Troy again.

After much noodling while Sleeping, here's a rough sketch of what is in potentia. Nothing definitive yet. BUT, I managed to figure out I have the room for a helix.

For reference, my CURRENT writing/computer desk is currently about where the Aisle in Penisula B to C is.

Our basement is weirdly shaped due to having stairs (180° with a landing halfway), and the utility room taking up about a third of the overall footprint. The doors cannot move. To the E of Penisula C is solid concrete backed by dirt, Above that is our front porch. South of that is the old layout area of about 13 ft square. That will become the new hobby, gaming, and writing area. The wall to the E of the Helix extends E another 7 feet. Decent amount of room there.

Peninsulas A and B would need to have center supports rising above to support the upper deck. C has a shallow stud wall to the east, and to the north (back wall of the layout) that can take brackets

An impressive performance from Orioles' starter Kyle Gibson yesterday! He went 6.1 scoreless innings allowing only 2 hits and struck out 11.
Orioles 5, Tigers 1.
Impressive start to the season. AL East is the dominant division in the AL. Last I looked, the O's were 4½ game out of first. Hope they can continue the pace. They continue to maintain a ½ game lead over the Yankees, as well as holding on the First AL Wild Card slot. Wow!

Good morning all.

A miserable weather day yesterday but the grandson had soccer games and they were not fun. Snow pellets, then monster snow flakes, then some sleet, back to snow pellets and then the sun popped out. That was just during a 60 minute youth game. Game 2 was in the sun but also low 30’s and very windy. valiant effort by the team but they lost both games. Thankfully both on the home pitch.

I had planned for a couple months to get a table and sell today at a train show. When it was time to pay for the space I decided not to as the weathering stuff was moving pretty good. Thankfully I did not commit as we are watching the grandkids this weekend while the parents and friends play in Sonoma County, Ca. Been there, done that and maybe because neither of us enjoy wine, I don’t care to ever go again. The daughter is a wino but not a wine snob… The SIL has his own vineyard now into year 7 and for the last 3 years has been able to sell all his production.

The grandson will be yielding some scissors this afternoon as we retreat into the craft room at his mom’s studio. He will cut up some poly fiber as I continue to try to play “mother nature” finishing off a few more aspen trees. He also will be practicing with the airbrush. I have 5 cars for him to clear coat. He has gotten very good at clear coats! I have 3 cars of mine I want a grime coat applied along the bottom sill of the cars. These are perfect for him to train on. He has a good eye and patience and you can’t teach that.

After the second soccer game yesterday 3 of his friends came over to the house and stayed for 2 hours. Slot car racing. 5 cars on 3 lanes and I got smoked. The girls are out for the Sunday morning ride. 3 grandmothers and granddaughters join Terry and the g/d a couple Sundays per month.

enjoy the day

Good morning from a damp Jersey Shore! 56°, cloudy and still raining. Yesterday, was a nice Spring Day, with a high of 76°. We actually did some yard work, enough to generate several more bags of debris for the dump.

Yesterday, the Jehovah's Witnesses made their semi annual appearance in the neighborhood. What was unusual was they were more selective and only approached every other house, with a team of "evangelists" on both sides of the street. What was insulting, was that they bypassed our house . Guess we reached a new low, being snubbed by the Witnesses 👍. Best laugh was on the closed community site, where someone captured these people on their "Ring" camera. The question asked by the person was "Does anyone know who these people are? They are going door to door". Seriously, ya gotta be kidding. I've been here 37 years, and Spring and Fall the Witnesses are here almost like clockwork. In fact, it's been that way everywhere I lived, from the time I was a kid...Some of these young people have really been sheltered all their lives, and are nowout on their own, and haven't got a clue.

Today, is the Third Sunday after Easter. Hope it's a pleasant day, where y'all are.

Not much else going on here in "Paradise". Our "Diverse" neighborhood is becoming more diverse with an influx of Orthodox Jews to add to our mix. Would like to be a fly on the wall when they have an encounter with the Witnesses.

I'm working on an expanded City Classics "Smallwood Street" warehouse. It will be painted first mild day after today, and become part of the Scott Paper complex. The next project will be the Shipping building, also using multiple Smallwood Street buildings.

Morning all,

Hit 30° overnight for a late freeze, currently 36° and sunny going for 60° later.

Had a nice visit with mom yesterday. Took the 2 oldest grandkids with us. Got a photo of myself with the 2 grandkids and mom. Sent a copy to my siblings and kids and titled it 2 kids visit with old people. Grandson said I only see one old person and he isn't sitting...LOL He later tells his parents he burned grandpa. I taught him well!!!

Not sure what's going on yet today, except I sitting in front of this computer.

Good Morning All. Cloudy, off & on light showers and 44°. During a break a bit ago, I found 0.2" in the rain gauge. Yesterday, it rained all day long 25 miles north in Oklahoma, but never passed south of the Red River. Started here around 0330.
I did plant another 20' row of green beans in the garden yesterday, filling the rest of a row that has tomatoes on the south end. This way, the harvest will be staggered a bit but will still overlap the earlier row. Different variety this row and it's also last years seed but green bean seed is usually good for 4-5 years if kept dry. All tomato plants are caged, fertilized and mulches now, and about half have flowers on them. With today's cool wet weather, I don't expect all of them to pollinate though.
Much of my morning yesterday was household chores, two loads of laundry and empty the dishwasher. Wife took off for Dallas to attend some activities with our granddaughter and will return today. I removed a tree after she left that she hated the location of, so she will come home to a pleasant (to her) surprise. Why is it that I can plant dozens of acorns every winter and none ever germinates, but Rocky the Squirrel can bury (and forget) them randomly and every one comes up??? I actually have at least 40 "volunteer" Bur Oak trees between 2' and 10' scattered around that I have let grow. I have transplanted a few as well.

Out in the train shed yesterday, I ran trains, and then ran some more. I did no project work at all. Some days are just like that. I had also spent extra time here on the forum getting caught up on some threads that I passed over earlier in the week. If you don't follow it, Lloyd's work on the MHO Junction is one thread that you shouldn't miss.
Here's a couple of photos for your enjoyment.

David - Dang! Does it ever stop raining in your part of the world???
Troy - Great idea to move the layout away from the electrical box. I like the plan that you posted this morning. Quite a few possibilities there especially for a no-lix, possibly combined with a partial helix. Even though Tony posted that 3% was doable in N scale, less is better. I have some initial thoughts that I will post later.
Karl - Very good point about the transition to grade. I found that to be tough on an earlier layout with just a 1.9% grade.

Everyone have a great day.
