Good evening Shop Dwellers!

Thanks again for the various affirmations on my enhanced photos of the slag dump: Jaz, Sherrell, Willie, Tom-C51, Rick, Gary, Christian, Hughie, Guy, Patrick, OB Ken, Tom-O, Joe, Karl, Curt

Terry
- I'm glad to see there is something finally going right in your situation with the health insurance, hopefully the trend will continue!

. . .
Wife woke up last night complaining about cramps in the calf - told her 'I did not know we had a cow'. Woops; hence the 'mo coffee' Flo.
. . .
CTC (or is it Tod?)- I was having the same problem with leg cramps in bed every night, until I started swallowing 400mg capsules of Magnesium at bedtime - now those pains are few and far between! YMMV...

. . .
Ken - Very neat witch-doctory in regards to adding smoke to you're photos.
. . .
:):):)

. . .
IB Ken- Neat scene. Somehow I missed the video so I went back and watched it. I really liked the slag car being dumped and the smoke/steam coming out of the cars.
. . .
Thanks Curt, glad you got to see the video! Of course I'm not able to simulate that kind of slag dumping on my layout during op sessions, since nobody has [yet] figured out a way to scale-down molten rock without burning down the house. But it was definitely a fun picture to stage.

* * *
Didn't really do much mrr activity today, since a good chunk of it was taken up by family commitments. I did, however, get to the local Home Depot to get some molding strip to place across the corrugated siding of my view block between staging and the yard. Maybe I'll get some time to work on it tomorrow after Mass..[?]

As a sequel to the slag dump photo, I'll leave you with a few more staged shots of that same spot that depict what happens after the dumped-out slag has solidified. First, there is a rig known as a skull cracker. ["Skull" is steel industry jargon for solidified residue of molten metal or slag.]
This consists of a crane with an electro-magnet that lifts a large, solid cast iron ball, then drops it repeatedly on the solidified slag to crush it.
skull_cracker_870x665.jpg

...then, the crushed slag is scooped up by a front-end loader while still smoking hot, and loaded into dump trucks for carting off to the aggregates processing facility:

There are some things just don't change much on MRL. This first photo was taken by the Montana Rail Link Railfan Society back on 10-10-15 of one of the pusher sets, shoving a BNSF train up Bozeman Pass's eastern side.

And this second photo by the same photographer of the same helper set in almost the same place doing exactly the same thing, today. You could be forgiven for thinking it was the same train.

pauses….
smiles….considers the fact that inevitably chefs are male, and males eat the most takeaways because they can’t or won’t cook,

that I can’t throw dough in the air to make it round so make square pizzas….then laughs….what the hell a jokes a joke and I don’t have a salami stuck up me……

historically of course we all know that pizza never started in Italy, US is the home of pizza and probably calzone the ‘sandwich’ version of a pizza, Chicago will swear that it is the home of pizza, but it was just like the Cornish pasty a safe form of fresh food. Cornish pasty originally had a thick crust so the miners could throw the crust away and not contaminate food with their hands, and a version of Cornish pasty had savoury one end and sweet often Apple the other end which is why likely apple sauce with meat 🥩 came about, my cousin is half Italian via New York and very particular about her Italian homemade sauces etc and yes nowadays they own pizza bases too….
putting a circular pizza in a square box implies a square pizza filling the whole box, so a sneaky way off offering less, but then each piece is equal and with crust where in a square pizza any inside pieces have no crust, and nowadays with filled crust this might lead to a punch up….and a pizza is easy to dive up,you know the more I think about it,as a pizza eater o n occasion I am happy to have pizza…….the big question is will male chefs allow female chefs to own the rights to pizza….pokes out tongue before laughing
as a totally quirky female,I would happily own pizzz - can I please have a patent and a trademark……grins

I should've made a smartass comment before. There was one brand here that did square pizzas for a while. Maybe they're round so it's easier to flick the whole thing around so the biggest piece is facing you.

Thete is a chain here that does square pizza. Ledos pizza is square cuz they don't cut corners.
BTW, its darn good pizza, and the little kids don't like the crust so it works out.

You all need to try squaring the circle with just geometry... none of that advanced Einstein type math.

Since Pi is irrational, and pizzas are Pi, it's irrational to make a square with the same area as a circle...

Therefore, to understand women is an irrational task, and doomed to failure.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go find a slice of Pie, because that is rational

Good morning y'all.

Flo- Coffee, please. And do y'all have any pizza back there? All this pizza talk is making me hungry. No, I don't care if it is round or square, just so long as it doesn't have pine apple on it. Which, coincidentally are not apples nor do the come from pine trees and also do not belong on pizza.

Thanks for the likes on the picture of The Row, I will try to keep them coming. I will soon have to get some lights and furnishings in order to proceed to the upper level, but I will have to paint the interior before that. Any advice on how to cover the interior walls so that the exterior will not glow when lighted? I was thinking a gray base coat covered with black and then painted for desired style, but I've never tried to light a plastic structure before so I don't know if this is sufficient. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Willie- Great shots from the train shed. very nice.

Toot- You know what they say. The more things change, the more they stay the same.

IBKen- Love the shots of the slag operations.

Good Morning All. Partly mostly cloudy and 60°, won't get much warmer before a vicious norther blows in around 10:00 and drops down to the mid-30's overnight. Warms back up again by tomorrow.
Beautiful day yesterday and I spent a lot of time doing outdoor tasks. I split a few of the larger logs from the tree adventure and moved them and some of the others over to where I intended to stack everything. My splitting limit right now is going to be three/day. I got the wedge stuck twice on one log! Took two crowbars to loosen it the first time. I could use an extra wedge sometimes. To avoid boredom, I also mowed the SW part of the yard over the septic tank and lateral lines. I also ran the mower with the grass catcher attached over piles of leaves to make mulch and soil loosener for next springs garden. Today I will fill a few depressions with dirt where major tree limbs hit the ground Wednesday.
I also deviated from my Thanksgiving plan by making the homemade cranberry sauce yesterday instead of tomorrow. It's easy and it's so much better than the canned stuff. It will also keep in the fridge for two weeks. Today I will still make the cornbread for the dressing. Dressing itself won't be made until Thursday. Turkey also comes out of the freezer this morning to begin thawing. It needs four days in the fridge.

Pizza - I make mine square because that's the shape of the pan that I use. We also have a place nearby that makes it square, but the name escapes me right now. It is crappy pizza, so I think that it is Dominoes. Never bought it but ate some at a friends house once.
In my daughter's neighborhood, there is a pizza place right next door to a BBQ place. They take the "burnt ends" from their brisket trimmings at the BBQ place, grind them up and make a limited number of "Burnt End Pizzas" every day. Daughter and SIL claim that they are extremely delicious.

Thanks for the likes and comments regarding the panoramic views yesterday; Steve J, Christian, Tom O, Steve, Tom, Curt, Jaz, Mikey, Tod H, Joe, Rick, Hughie, Patrick, Gary, IB Ken, Guy, Karl, Jesse.

I'll take a pizza omelet this morning Flo. Sausage, hamburger, bacon, mushrooms, cheese, onions, and bell peppers with those eggs. I'll use some salsa instead of pizza sauce.

It appears that the train shed will only get short visits for the next week or so, just like the past few days. Too many other things going on. I did determine that I will have to remove that broken switch to repair it, if it is indeed fixable. My only spare just happens to be a RH which is what I need. Interestingly enough, the missing closure rail is not needed as the trucks rerail themselves after passing the gap! Not the way I want to run though. The other route is not affected. Meanwhile the figure painting setup has returned to the workbench for occasional short stints.
At the risk of possibly repeating photos of the layout that may have been posted before, here are a few more.
Here is a panoramic view from the other end of the room. The Maultown Industrial Park is at the opposite end.

Here's a view of the west wall showing both levels.

And the north wall with Charlottesville on the upper level and Gainesville on the lower.

Karl - I used to see an occasional Greg's Garage kit at the LHS about 15 years ago. All were too early for my era. Haven't seen any since though. It would be interesting to see what you have.
Guy -
How wide is the radius at the end of the Maultown Industrial 'blob'?
The blob itself is 68" in diameter. The radius of the outer main line is 32.375" while the inner passing siding is 30.125. They both work for all of my rolling stock, although the 89' autoracks look a bit out of place on the passing siding. But I rarely run them and they are actually stored off-layout.
Mikey - There are a lot of "DPM type" buildings left in small towns in Texas (and some big towns like Ft Worth), but you're right that they aren't in as good a condition as the ones that you posted.
Jaz -
males eat the most takeaways because they can’t or won’t cook,
I'll have you know that once I retired, I took over the kitchen and cook all meals now; up from the 2-3 times a week prior to that.;)
Jesse -
Any advice on how to cover the interior walls so that the exterior will not glow when lighted?
I just spray paint the walls with Krylon Black Primer. In HO, the MR walls are thick enough that only one coat is necessary.

Ironically enough, today is National Stuffing Day, just in time for Thanksgiving.
Everybody have a great Sunday and go to the church of your choice. Stay safe. OK Willie, remember to click on "Post Reply" today!
