I hope all is well with your dog boy. I feel bad for Bud, Bailey, you and the rest of the family. You all will miss each other.

In my "Bible" it says any good whiskey. Make mine Jameson please. I certainly won't complain about bourbon. I will only say "thank you" for either one.
I don’t drink bourbon I just know Americans love it I have a sneaky appreciation of half decent French brandy, do not get the flavoured gins or vodkas, like Pernod, Cointreau,Benedictine, amaretto, ginger wine, baileys, peach brandy, and a number of other cocktail drinks oh and mead made from honey, I used to drink like a fish inc as Bach German brandy before I was pregnant and then basically I just stopped and just occasionally indulge,i Weill drink a Sancerre,a Hungarian wine especially sweet but often a glass is more than enough, plus I don’t like feeling tipsy so that is a great limiter, but I love cocktails Singapore sling, and brandy Alexander and Malibu so pina colada

i went to the obit link but it needed my email, which I do not like to put out,but I can plant a tree on his behalf as one of the items they requested,a nice person, not someone I knew a long time I have not been here that long, but I will miss him,and as none of us can escape the inevitable be it age, illness or accident or god forbid worse, then I just want to say I would miss any of you as I find the people here at the coffee shop worthy of my time and I enjoy the friendship here,I noticed Patrick joined the same time as me,and I enjoy the recipes from Troy,I sympathise with Terrys situation, love much of the US modelling, the non clique coffee chat and flo,a relaxed arena to share with like minded modellers and a small insight into their lives, I like popping in here and sharing and am sad at the passing of someone who was genuinely nice. I hope he went gently, prefer not to know if he didn’t,and if there is a afterlife I sincerely hope he will be welcomed and be in a better place,if he was half as nice as he seemed here his poor family will miss him. I‘m off back tomorrow. Thank you for saying why he disappeared.Sad, we cannot avoid it but it makes it no less 😞

That's odd. I accessed it using my cell phone, and linked it from there, as well. No email required, nor asked for. I just went back and clicked the link, and again went straight to it, with no email request.

I'm sad to read that Garry boarded the Westbound. My condolences and prayers to his survivors. We will miss his commentary, participation and photographs of his excellent modeling here in the forum. Garry worked for the Grand Trunk, and we shared a couple of mutual acquaintances who left the PC for the GTW back in the 70s. I never had the honor of meeting Mr Boyd in person, but will miss his on line presence.

So very sad to hear that Garry passed away. Only knew him from posts over the past couple of years in this very shop, but reading the news here cut the legs out from under me. I liked Garry a lot. -- Sad, sad for his loss. 😢

More condolences and prayers for his family.

This last 4th of July was the first 4th of July in memory that I did not over indulge.
Louis- If you do not overindulge, you will be in condition to have memories of the day.
I have to watch my blood sugar levels, too. I have only been able to have 3 beers over the last 10 months.
Spent the saved money foolishly, on more flatcars!

Just picked up on Garry's passing. I am stunned and offer my most sincere condolences to his personal family.
I know his forum family here will miss him in many ways.

I'm up at 0400 local time, so why not reply on Booze thread?

One of my book series is set in Southern Calif, and I added a tiki bar (why not?) and the drink everyone ordered there is a Mai Tai. But I never had one.

At the author conf in Sept, there was a tiki bar on the beach, so I had one. And loved it.

Asked the bartenders last week in Vegas, and it was hit or miss. One was barely passable and I watched her pour the the booze. But, they all use the drink hose/wand for the juice part. I suspect I got more seltzer than juice. (Seltzer is NOT an ingredient in a mai tai... she possibly hit two buttons at once for OJ)

My own mai tia recipe (which is the basic one):
White gin 2 jig
TrippleSec 1 jig
Orgeat Syrup 1 shot (almond flav)
Lime Juice 1 shot
Pour over ice in shaker, commit violence upon contents
Dump into glass (with ice from shaker), add pineapple/kiwi juice to taste.

Comes out fairly sweet. The juice portion at the end can be whatever you like. The Florida Tiki bar used pineapple juice mixer. The bars in Vegas wanded OJ and water into the glass.

And the worst of the Vegas ones was from a "tiki" bar on the strip.

Good morning y'all.

Flo- Coffee, please. And pour another also, in memory of Garry. We'll skip the breakfast this morning in favor of a moment of silence.

No update on The Row, as work has not allowed for much extra time this week. Although this week has seemed almost like vacation compared to last week. I've only worked 35 hours so far compared to 73 last week. That is the (dis)advantage of being back in the home warehouse, we have more drivers so the routes are smaller, Plus we have a warehouse staff here that handles everything but loading our trucks. Out in the branches we have to do it all. As the work week comes to a close, I am thankful that next week is a short week. Perhaps over the holiday I will find time for modeling as well as spending as much time with the family as possible. I have another 2 week out of town stint coming, with one week being in a new warehouse with new customers to learn. Hoping to find some time to hit a few train shops (if any) and check out some scenery. I'll be staying close to Fort Bragg so we'll see. I'll be back in Raleigh the week after, so hopefully I'll find time to visit the shop I missed out on last week. That route is going to take me out toward Greenville and Rocky Mount so I'm not sure. At least it will present plenty of time to soak in the scenery. It's a 90 mile drive from the warehouse to the first stop. As one might imagine, there are a lot of pine trees to observe. Which is not a bad thing, if you like pine trees.

Y'all have a blessed day. I'm going to go sit in my corner and sip my coffee. Need to do a little catching up and research for my next trip as well.

I will miss Garry. He was a master modeler and his layout is a true masterpiece. He was what I refer to as a Hall of Fame modeler.

Yet from this lofty position in our hobby he always listened, answered questions and offered help to novices, like myself.

He was here when I joined this forum and he was a big part of why I stayed.

I could never say enough about the respect and admiration I have for him.

I was looking forward to his Lionel trains he would run under his Christmas tree.

God be with you Garry.

Good morning all! A chilly 26 and clear heading on up to sunny and 44 for the day.

I was off the last two days and have come to the conclusion that even 2 days off isn't enough. I miss being retired LOL I retired in 2016 and stayed that way until 2019 when I finally figured out that health care was just too expensive for me to already be retired. I'm not old enough for Medicare, so it was back to work. If it wasn't for my Diabetes, I wouldn't need a super insurance plan because I only rarely get sick. Buying insulin though makes you glad you have a good enough plan to cover most of the cost.

Once again, nothing much to report from here. Hope you all have a great day!

Good Morning All. Clear and 36°, close to but not yet freezing.
Yesterday's sunrise.

Won't be staying long this morning as we have to leave for the hospital at 0600 for the aspiration, the "almost there" step towards the re-replacement knee. This is mainly to draw fluids from the knee and surrounding areas to ascertain that the infection is truly gone. Yesterday's pre-op visit was OK I guess, since my wife was in good spirits afterwards. Partly because they are going to count that visit for today's procedure and for the pre-op for the actual knee surgery on 12-3, thus saving an extra visit.
Grocery trek yesterday went well, Kroger still was giving away free turkeys with a $100 purchase, so I got a second one. Interesting that size doesn't matter, the freebies ranged from 12 lbs to 24 lbs. I could have gotten the biggest, but it might not have fit in the freezer with one there already. I see turkey on the menu for several meals in the next two months. This one is 19 lbs. I'll be using one next week as I attempt to prepare my first full Thanksgiving feast by myself since taking over the kitchen six years ago. Normal procedure is a giant feast with my five siblings and their extended families, generally 44-46 folks at once.

Just a quickie BLT this morning Flo, time is limited.

Thanks for the likes yesterday regarding the tree removal pictures; OB Ken, Steve J, Chad, Sherrel, Karl, Louis, Troy, Guy, Jaz, Christian, Mikey, Hughie, Tom O, Patrick, Curt, Tom, Gary, Rick, IB Ken, Joe.

Between making the grocery trek and my wife's hospital pre-op yesterday, I didn't get a lot of time in the train shed. I only ran trains.
Here are a few pictures of trains "waiting in the hole" on passing sidings as I ran by.

Troy - that workbench is just too orderly!
Christian - Nice video, the part that I had time to watch, about the first five minutes. I have the YouTube page bookmarked so I can go back.
Hughie - I have other shade trees to sit under, but that one was the first one that my wife and I planted when we bought the house/property 41 years ago. It will get another life heating my house next winter. It did a great job of shading the west side of the house during our sun-intensive summer days, as well as shading part of the pool in the morning that kept it from getting too warm.
Ctclibby - Welcome to the Coffee Shop. That's a great looking train shed. I'd love to see some interior shots as things develop. From your description and picture, there seems to be several levels.
Mikey - Nice pictures, they do remind one of the DPM catalog.

Still devastated by the news of Garry's passing. We had communicated about me visiting him next spring when we would have passed about 40 miles from him on our way to visit my wife's sister in eastern Tennessee.

Gotta go now, everybody have a great day and stay safe. Please excuse any grammar errors in this post as I haven't had time to proof it.

Morning all,

Sad news about Garry. Prayers for him and his family.

I got a new office chair yesterday. Boss ordered the wrong one (mid-back instead of high back) and the person needed a high back. So I finally got the first new piece of furniture since I got here a bit over 6.5 years ago. Pretty comfy for a change.
I also ordered my first new personal desktop computer in 20 years. I usually make mine from pieces, but to me this was too good of a deal to pass on...Dell Vostro 5890 (10th Gen i7, 16Gb ram, 256Gb SSD with a 1Tb storage disk, DVD +\-, NVIDIA Graphics, wireless network card). Supposed to be in this next week. Should make working from home a bit easier or else playing games later on. Coming in with Windows 10 Pro, but will be upgraded to Windows 11 almost immediately. My current desktop is a Core Duo made in 2008 and takes 5 minutes to be ready to work.

Willie: A good thermometer is your friend on the turkey. Make sure it's thawed before cooking. I have been doing the turkey and different parts of the meal (all parts have been done by me at one time or another) for years. I boil the giblets and save the liquid for gravy, otherwise they just get tossed as no one eats them. Used to treat the dog, but we no longer have one, although the kids keep insisting that I need a dog.

Good Morning!

All of 10F out there this morning, with what looks to be a full moon. I understand that the moon experienced some kind of celestial event overnight. Just another astronomy thing that a person can't see because it's always too cloudy when these things happen. Hence, the cause of my dis-interest in astronomy. Besides, I looked up one time, and got it right in the eye!

I wanted to answer post questions in a more timely fashion. However, the sad news of the loss of a friend caused me to wait until I felt better.

Guy - I just finished watching "Rocky Mountain RR". Is that trackage in your photo the same as in the videos, CN I believe.
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7988878/
Hughie - Those were not my photos. They were scooped off of some news media story. - I believe they show the CP line running through the southern Rockies and the CN line running through the northern Rockies. Both have been cut by flood and rock/mud slides. Sounds like the highways have been cut as well, leaving no overland route over the Rockies to reach the major port in Vancouver.
It's a big deal! And to make things worse, they are calling for another 100mm of rain to fall on the western side of the Rockies come Tuesday. That's 4" of rain in American.
I believe the media is glossing it up to be bigger than it is. There are other ways to go, like going through Washington. - Plus, I believe they'll have it fixed in very good time!
But, it's another excuse to raise the price on consumer goods.

Here's a photo of what I did yesterday:
XmasLights_11-18-2-21.JPG

Sadly, the wife is still not happy. She wants more done around the yard. That women is what I call 'Christmas Crazy'! Lucky for me, she's at work today; so I have time to have another coffee and procrastinate.

Willie - That was one big mother of a tree. I'm sure you'll get some warming heat outta that baby! Were the Mexicans illegals?; I hear that's an acceptable means of hiring labor down in Texas. Same as in Alaska.

Guess that's enough! Don't want to bore you. Have a good one!
