New Train Building

I added the Dormer on at the last minute yesterday morning & that took up a lot of time away from the roof shingles being nailed down. They finished up all the add ons & all the shingles about 5pm today. All they have to do now is add the wide roof ridge I hope right after it stops raining. It's closed in right now w/a row of shingles to keep the water out. The contractor is going to do the porch under the roof extension in front of the door next week. Looks like no work on the building for about 4 days until it quits raining.

I like the dormer idea - but looking at it I could see a nice caboose cupola in the middle of that roof - with a couple of benches and a spiral staircase up from the train room

Update on the Trainroom. 3-28-23. Covering on the outside wall, Windows in(7), All wiring done(12ga.) except for heat & air. Wired for receptacles on wall every 6 ft., plugs in ceiling for 4ft LED lights, 2 overhead fans, switch on both walls for front & back door, outside recepts., ouside LEd lights for both doors, LED shop lite on porch under Dormer(ceiling) wired up for a wall mounted heater & A/C. There will be 7 or 8 LED shop lites. I requested 12 ga. wire in the whole building. Seperate Breaker switch for both sides of the room & for the lights & fans, all seperate. Breaker box on the wall by the front door. Here's some photo's. Doors are next, then sheetrock, Flooring & interior paint. I'll keep you-all posted.

I see no center obstructions, similar to how I built my train shed.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I see no center posts to interfere with layout construction. I used trusses for my 20' x 32' train shed so no center support posts to build around.

Looks like a nice LVL down the middle so no telepost, nice!

Nice open space - I'm envious. I have to deal with a post in the basement where I'm building my layout.

There is Trusses up there. That's the only thing holding up the roof & they are 16" on center. Most roofs around this section are 24" on center & when you walk on the roof the plywood moves up & down. I told them what I wanted & they did it my way.

Update on the Trainroom. Shingles are on, most of the Vinyl Siding is on & all the Sheetrock is up & all the electrical is in except finishing after the sheetrock is finished & the Painting will be done after the electric & sheetrock is finished.

Very nice, I am sure this will provide years of creative entertainment. My hobby activities mostly occur in a 28x32 garage/workshop/studio with a downstairs for the heavy industry and a studio upstairs . The bottom space has a 10' ceiling which I greatly like and the upstairs is somewhat smaller as the rafters form a tall A frame effect with dormers, big windows and a deck off one end. The upper floor is TJI's on 12" spacing as are the rafters. A nice airy space with loads of natural light.

Still a multi purpose area and my potential layout not so huge. Enjoy your new space!

I too am envious not having such a space in which to build. Being confined to a 12' X 10' room that also has your desk and computer in it seems insignificant (even in N Scale)

I also ordered an 8 by 10 ft. Deluxe shed that will be sitting behind my building & will be accessible at the back door of my building at ground level. It will be insulated in the ceiling, walls & door. I also had them to make a hole in the wall for an Air Conditioner which will be covered until I get a 125 volt A/C. This shed will be holding the bandsaw, Drill Press, Bench Grinder & Wire wheel. I already ordered a nice workbench for it too from harbor Freight. I will also have a space in one corner of the train room for a roll out work bench that will be stored under the end Train Tables & a space for my big rolling tool box. All my tables in the train room will be 2ft from the wall. 3ft tables on the long side & 4ft tables on the ends. All my wiring will be on the fronts of the tables & not underneath. The wires will be covered w/either a sliding door or a hinged door the full length of the tables. I figured on this layout to have the wiring on the front & not under the tables. I hope I can make it work the way I think. 4-16-23

Why not attach them to three walls and gain extra space in the middle? It can be done with a turnaround blob at each end to avoid a duckunder or removable bridge.
