THANKS, Yannis; here are some pics of my weekend progress, a burned over area; I decided to re-work a plain looking area to be an area that was burned over about 15 or 20 years ago and new vegetation (aspen, grass) is coming in and the old dead trees still standing:

This is what it looked like when I started, just sheet rock compound over screen:

This is what I used for the small aspen trees, they are called "branches", I painted the stems white and added some black dots; they are supposed to look like young aspen trees:

Here is how it looked like when I finished. I made a little fire in my yard and burned some spruce twigs. I cut the bottom of the twigs with a jugsaw to match the hillside and inserted a small toothpick in a hole and inserted it in a matching hole in the hillside;

I also put some smaller broken pieces around to look like left over fallen debris; I added some "burnt grass" ground cover to the stems of a couple of the trees to look like moss, also put some on the debris because this area was to have burned over 15 or 20 years ago:

(notice the powerlines showing up above)

Here is the view that goes with the "before" photo:

THANKS for looking, lasm

Chet, Tony, thanks for the compliments! Here is a pic my wife took when I was working on the scene:

Awesome job David, every time I check in I'm amazed at the progress you make in such a short time and details you apply to the layout. Thanks for sharing.

TONY--Thanks, I usually don't like my wife messing around with the camera, but her shot effectively shows a larger view of the layout that I usually don't post.

Gary, Steve--Thanks for viewing and thanks for the compliment!!

Hey Logan, been a while

I like those dark lines, they're easily seen.
Just curious, did you try the grey?

I also like those trees
Nice work as usual

Lloyd

THANKS Yannis; I have been following your layout planning and am looking forward to your construction activities!

Lloyd

Lloyd, sorry I missed the question earlier, but I just used up a spool (100') of white and it looked so good painted black that I did not order any more. So, I did not try the gray.

Painting it black also somehow hid the flat characteristic of the white string which looks flat off the spool. Also, I am glad I went with the heavier diameter, at first I thought it was too fat but now think it is fine.

There is the area where I used black thread coated with glue that I still may redo because of the subtle "kinks". Still hoping that time will solve that problem.

Thanks for looking!

Thought I would post a couple pics of my Mantua 0-6-0. I purchased it from ebay for $15. I cleaned it up and wiped off the old numbers/letters with 91% alcohol and gave it a fresh coat of flat black primer, added some new letters and stuff,

This is a heavy loco and runs nice for an antique!

Whoever puts the letters on has a little difficulty getting them straight. I guess they probably gave the paint brush to the fireman!

Nice work LASM, it looks like it just came out of the locomotive shop after an overhaul. Also a great deal, you got to love eBay!

It's been a while since I have looked through your thread and I am really impressed! I love the electric lines, meter and more things then I have time to mention. You are really building a world class layout. It won't be long before your layout is featured in Model Railroader Magazine.

You should write an article for them about building a top of the line layout without spending top of the line money.

Thanks for sharing your work. It is very cool to have seen the work go from empty room to the layout you have today. I have to say I still miss the hanging layout, I bet you do too, but this one is so much better.

JWB-- Thanks for checking it out!! Part of the reason most all my stuff is old is because it lets me into the hobby at a fraction of the cost!

Bruette--Thanks for your encouragement and time in checking out my photos. I have a blast with building my layout and spend a couple hours here and there and also look at lots of pictures of other layouts and photos for ideas.

Pics of some more details added over the weekend. My wife helped so it took way longer than I thought it would ;)

Here are some tulips along with the aspens growing out of the rock outcrops:
