New Layout for LASM

Thanks, A2T, here is the coaling area I finished last night, you can see the boarding house way down the track:

Things are moving along, in another month most of the initial scenery will be done maybe. Then I will be going around adding details and working on my freight cars...

also do a lot more running trains. Thanks for looking, lasm

Thanks, Steve; I am anxious too--it is tough not to get ahead of myself.

Actually thinking about doing a N scale layout in the other half of the basement, inspired by your project!!
(don't tell my wife) lasm

Thanks, Tony--I could spend a lot of time adding stuff like shovels, brooms, tires, more trees. My wife was saying last night I needed some cats and dogs, a few deer, some bears. And a lot more people, which I agree with.

I told her I have seen all that stuff on ebay but have to concentrate on the tasks at hand for a while longer.

Sorry mate, thought you were talking about detailing the buildings etc, not adding things like you have mentioned. None the less, I am also looking forward to seeing your layout completed; although, I seriously doubt it ever will be :)

The buildings themselves are pretty much done when I put them on. I am one of those guys that does them as a separate project, and when completed, put them in their "nest".

I usually don't glue them down too hard, who knows when the thing will be modified or moved? Some of my buildings were made when I first got back into model railroading back in 2009, the Grizzley Flats depot and the scratch built water tower being the first models assembled.

Here are a couple photos of my weekend progress, a series of 3 wooden bridges over a small "dry" wash, and the second one gives an overview of the newly created pond, a landscaped area for the freight shed, and old stuff that was posted in earlier photos of previous progress in the background:

I can see I have to add some ballast and get this track painted (rusted) like the other track.

The pond looks really good from this distance, it is coated with the super glossy mod podge, is my first experience with a water like covering. I have a few other areas to do as well.

The area under the track may have a slow trickle going under, but is supposed to be like a stream bed that usually is dry but swells up during heavy rains, will take all the runoff from the adjacent incompleted industrial area.

Thanks for viewing, lasm

Thanks for looking--I wanted to get way more done but my wife came up with a couple things that took presedence.

I use a lot of glue water on the dirt and test them with a vacuum to clean up any dust. Over time it seems I keep adding brush and grass and stuff but in this case the finer particles over the larger particles give some realism.

Thanks for your comments--lasm

Pictures of setting up my Swift processing plant, this is the key feature in the industrial area and is somewhat compressed otherwise would take up the entire space!!

Getting these close ups gives me a chance to line up the track height with the doors and also brings to light some of the imperfections--

I am trying to line up the box car door with the loading dock, I can't get the car any closer so they will have to use a short ramp to go in and out, but I want the elevation close. I didn't see that gob of glue before.

This door has to be a good elevation for trucks. I need to raise the elevation of the ground to get them to match up better

Swift processor 002.jpg

Here I want the unloading ramp to line up with the stock cars. Looks like I need to raise the track a little

Here is an overview of the whole operation. This takes up a lot of room, I penciled out the roads and a couple parking spots, I think most of the track is going to have concrete over it.

This part is really fun but also kind of nerve racking because I want everything to work and have to try some different config's when I always want the first thing to work.

Looks good. It is a bit of a pain that loading docks don't line up with the track on roadbed. I used Homabed and ended up using a router to gradually drop the level of the track the quarter of an inch to the surface of the plywood. Saw dust all over, but most industrial tracks do drop from the level of the main line to the actual surface of the ground as do many passing sidings.

Good point here, I am going to have to build up the ground around the tracks to get the same illusion, I will use the joint compound for this;

I can pour some soft mud where the cattle unloading chute is and press the pen in a little to get this to look better elevation wise.

That will work. Probably not as much of a mess as using a router. Here's what I ended up with by using the router. If you look carefully at the right of the first picture, you can see the track gradually coming to ground level. In the second picture you may make out the switcher also dropping to ground level.

Looks great LASM, that dry wash and scenery leading up to it looks really cool. I like the way it turned out.

Thanks, Steve, with my methods I am never quite sure how it will look until it is done. In this case, they dumped the big rocks that were in the way of previous track into the gully and poured the ballast on top to make a road bed.

I always pour the rocks on the top and the ballast too and let them fall down like the real operation.
