Regarding this:

"also to anyone else, where can I pick up these metal replacement pieces? if im gonna do it I might as well do it properly!! "

I have built about 30 of the blueprint kits and the details they come with are fairly durable and as long as you are careful you wont have any issues.

I dont know if anyone makes direct replacement metal parts anyways, but the factory stuff usually fits perfectly. These are beautiful cars when done. I would not use CA if you can, rather I would look for the liquid plastic cement stuff, like ambroid pro weld. Works great for welding plastic.

If you want a beginner style kit - just look for a Athearn 40' boxcar kit (in the blue box). I started by building these, then went to accurail kits and now I mostly build the branchline kits. If you really want a kit that looks awesome - build a branchline passenger car. They take a long time to complete, but they look awesome when done.

ok, so Ill probabibly get a blue box kit or a accurail (may do accurail) and try that as my first starter kit...I want to learn how to do this stuff properly before trying that harder model. as for the LED lamp do they have the kind with LEDS with the magnifier at all?? thats what I really would like/need since I don't have the greatest eyes when it comes to tiny things...so I do need a magnifier and I would love the low heat (and energy) of LEDs...yes im willing to pay a bit more for the LED based magnifier lamp if needed!!

If you are looking for a really good quality magnifier you can't go wrong with a Luxo Lamp Co. magnifier. They are pricey, but if you have bad eyes they are great, because you can get different lenses to increase the magnification. Mine is a flourecent model. It is about half the price of the LED models. It uses a ring shaped bulb and gives off a nice bright, even light. It can be on for hours and doesn't get hot. Here is a link to their site.

You may be able to pick one up cheap on Ebay or some other internet site as well. I got mine at a garage sale and it came with an 8 diopter lens and a large antique drafting set as well. Best 10 bucks I ever spent.

anyone have other brand suggestions for the lamp? or any thing like that?

Depends on how much you want to spend, they start from about $30.00 and can go up over $600.00. Have a look at Staples/Office Depot, Walmart and any other stationary stores in your area. Drafting supply store also usually carry them and I have even seen them in some second hand stores.

The choice is really up to you.

Good on you Jim!

I am sure you will find building is a great way to enjoy part of the hobby. I know I do.

Not sure where you will be getting those older kits, but I get my Branchline, and others, from JS Geare. Great prices and quick service. I sometimes buy from him to get cars just to practice weathering on.

Here is his URL:

I have no monetary or other interest in his site, just a satisfied customer.

So what does it feel like now that it's finished?

Anything you would have done differently?

What's your next project seeing you have one under your belt?

Have fun and enjoy as you've found a GREAT aspect of a GREAT hobby.

So what does it feel like now that it's finished? love watching it roll around the track knowing I did the work!! :D

Anything you would have done differently? tried to paint it first before assembly into the colors I want

What's your next project seeing you have one under your belt? trying another, maybe adding painting or weathering to the next one

Have fun and enjoy as you've found a GREAT aspect of a GREAT hobby.

Jim

Thanks guys!!

Earlier this year I bought 60 used N scale railcars of all types for only $2.95 each. Guess what? Age, wear and tear had reduced many of them to "kits"......as in restoration kits. The wheels fell off, the trucks fell off, all kinds of detail parts fell off. Still was easily worth it though. It was way fun opening the packages and removing each small car from its own bubble wrapper.....(no plastic jewel boxes at this price)......my first model train equipment since around 1960. Was no problem getting them all back to working condition.
