I was 12 years old, and I watched them bring the U-505 across South Shore Drive from Lake Michigan. Once in place, there were speeches by RAdm Dan Gallery, who had led the Navy task force that captured the boat, and Adm. William "Bull" Halsey! I was on the North side of the audience. so I wouldn't be in this picture. Later, the Pioneer Zephyr was moved in alongside the boat. Both stayed there, exposed to the weather, for years, until a below-ground addition was added to the Museum, and both moved inside.

On this day in 1997, a funeral was held for Princess Diana, who had died in a car crash several days earlier. More than one million people lined the procession, and an estimated 2.5 billion watched the televised ceremony, which included a performance by Elton John, who performed a version of his classic song “Candle in the Wind.”

I just listened to that song yesterday and thought it was written for Diana, but it was written way before that. I keep forgetting who Norma Jean is/was.

It was originally written about Marilyn Monroe, but he rewrote some of the lyrics for Princess Diana.

Overview of "Candle in the Wind" Rewrite

Elton John’s “Candle in the Wind” was originally written in 1973 as a tribute to Marilyn Monroe. However, in 1997, the song was rewritten to honor Princess Diana, who tragically passed away in an auto accident.

rewrote some of the lyrics
I found the lyrics. I guess I never really paid enough attention to it before.

Goodbye England's rose
May you ever grow in our hearts
You were the grace that placed itself
Where lives were torn apart
You called out to our country
And you whispered to those in pain
Now you belong to heaven
And the stars spell out your name

As Mike said, it was written about Marilyn Monroe. Her real name was Norma Jean.

Both their murders are government cover ups! IMOO, YMMV,
