They may want to go back to the old way of targeting vice relying on gps. That may be the first thing to go.
As I posted above, shooting Angle A was a whole lot of fun...especially in sub-zero weather. We had to shoot each angle 16 times, average the results, and hope it was within specs. If not, packed up and called for C&GS to reshoot the monuments. All sorts of fun, especially if something went wrong. By the time we got everything sighted in, our eyeballs might be hitting the tops of our boots. If, due to some malfunction in the missile guidance system, the bird didn't process to Strategic Alert (green light in the LCF), we might be ordered to restart the system and wait another 3-1/2 hours! Our nuclear Triad has worked well for the last 60+ years. But it only works if the leader(s) on the other side are reasonable sane, and don't want their country destroyed. So far so good. So far there have been no nuclear detonations on the North American continent other than at the old test sites. So, we did our job to the best of our ability. Peace was our Profession.

Oh, BTW, we were told that the Soviets used the bottom part of the Swiss-made theodolites!

I used to do weapons systems alignment on US Navy ships. Start a couple of hours past sun down, sttay up all night and shoot the bubble. Spin 45, shoot, spin 45, shoot. Pass the line, move the theodolytes and continue until all elements are done. And for some reason, they always wanted to do it in Jan/Feb in the freezing cold. I had sweats under my coveralls. My eyeballs were constantly running, so really couldn't see the bubble. And then I would feel the warm water running down my leg. Luckily it was sweat haha.

One of the greatest women of my lifetime and proof women can reign effectively.

In the 60’s, a pic like this was in my 🇨🇦 grade school class … the days started off singing God Save the Queen and O Canada…every day…my best friend was from 🇬🇧… the lady that babysat me was from 🇬🇧 ….

Oh, yeah! Nothing like that sort of duty. Of course, we had to run all over Central Montana in a blue truck before we could get to work. Had to do a Reference Mirror Azimuth Verification at least every 180 days, plus doing Target Align and Startup on a missile guidance system after any on-missile work had been done by other teams, replacing the missile itself, or the guidance system, or the business end. In the summer we might even run into 100 deg. F. weather, which might cause the targeting console in the van on the surface to shut down...in the middle of a tape run! When MMII at the 564th were postured, they had a small, portable tape drive, so didn't have to mess with the big truck, but still had to use the theotolites.

By the time I arrived on the scene at Whiteman AFB, Targeting Teams had been done away with during the Force Modernization Program.

My EMT Team and I targeted the missile directly with the code tapes we retrieved from Keys & Codes upon dispatch. This was loaded much the same way you loaded the data, except it was all on tape and we did it from the LER during annual code change, a can or bomb swap, or ERCS package emplacement or removal.

The cartridge tape about the size of an 8-track tape but looked like a giant cassette tape was inserted into the tape drive using on the left under the grey door. The right box is the code set verifier. All those flashy lights had to sequence correctly and for the right amount of time.

After we finished the tape-load startup and backed out, we had to wait for several alignment and missile tests before the site came up to SA, and then we went to the next site. The whole thing took about three hours on a good day.

I hear they're doing it with laptops now.
