As I posted above, shooting Angle A was a whole lot of fun...especially in sub-zero weather. We had to shoot each angle 16 times, average the results, and hope it was within specs. If not, packed up and called for C&GS to reshoot the monuments. All sorts of fun, especially if something went wrong. By the time we got everything sighted in, our eyeballs might be hitting the tops of our boots. If, due to some malfunction in the missile guidance system, the bird didn't process to Strategic Alert (green light in the LCF), we might be ordered to restart the system and wait another 3-1/2 hours! Our nuclear Triad has worked well for the last 60+ years. But it only works if the leader(s) on the other side are reasonable sane, and don't want their country destroyed. So far so good. So far there have been no nuclear detonations on the North American continent other than at the old test sites. So, we did our job to the best of our ability. Peace was our Profession. They may want to go back to the old way of targeting vice relying on gps. That may be the first thing to go.
Oh, BTW, we were told that the Soviets used the bottom part of the Swiss-made theodolites!
