Hello, I've been lurking on here for a couple of weeks now. My name is Mike and I'm pretty much new to model railroading/trains. I started a HO scale layout several years ago but mainly played with it around Christmas and would then lose interest. This year I've done more on it in the past few weeks than in the past few years combined and really enjoying it. I'm 40 yrs old, and have a ton to learn about this hobby so I'll be asking lots of stupid questions starting out! Sorry! My other main hobbies are computers and cars, but during the winter I don't get to play with the car so much so I end up watching too much TV. The model railroading is to get me out of that somewhat.

To help get inspired I've been taking the family to Lancaster, PA where we checked out the National Toy Train museum a couple of weeks ago and the Choo Choo Barn today. Very cool layouts and impressive layouts at both!! Anyways, just thought I'd say hi. I'll try and post a picture of what I have so far in the Show off section for you all to laugh at, I mean post helpful comments on! ;)

Welcome aboard. Since you are in Maryland, mark your calendar for the Great Scale Model Train Show on Feb 2 & 3 at the fairgrounds in Timonium, Maryland.
Like you, I'm also into cars, and they get put away in the garage to hibernate for the winter. The trains are the winter time, rainy day, and weekday evening hobby for me.

You don't want to miss this show. It will be your best source for everything you need for your layout, so start making your shopping list now for the show. The modular layouts and displays in all scales will help keep you inspired as well. I model HO scale and mainly look at HO scale displays. I'm always amazed at the detail you can find in some of the scenery when you really look, that you would miss if you just look at the over all scene (things like an old lady shooing away a door to door vacume cleaner salesman in one scene, open windows with curtains blowing in the wind in another scene).
Heres a link to a few photos I took at the last show they did in Timonium.

I'm in northern Virginia, and always try to attend the Timonium show. It's an hour and a half drive for me, but it's always worth the trip.

Welcome to forums Mike, from one Marylander to another! I drive either thru your town or on the outskirts on my way to/from work, and lived there ~ 25 years ago - so I know Columbia fairly well.

If you want some more inspiration, check out the FCSME holiday layout in the basement of the West Friendship Volunteer Fire Dept. They're running on weekends thru December, and weekday evenings from 6 to 9pm. Lots of very finely detailed modules in there!

Hey Ken, you running any evening? Maybe I'll stop by, depending on who you are running with.

I went to the Timonium show in November. I heard someone complaining about how bad the economy is and how few vendors there were. I haven't been to many train shows, but I can tell you it was HUGE! I spent five hours going through the place and that was with a two year old. Imagine if I was alone....
