I don't know enough about Märklin trains to be able to answer your question specifically. What makes you think that the track is wrong? Märklin is usually three rail AC models but that may not be true in every case. You didn't provide a picture of the bottom view of the loco, so it's hard to tell if it is two-rail DC or three-rail AC. Edit your thread title to include the word Märklin in it and our resident Märklin expert, Michael, will take notice.

Thanks

Nothing wrong with that track. The center conductors are in the center of the sleepers.

The pick-up skis ride over those little nubs in the center. Too bad Lionel couldn't come up with something as unobtrusive as Märklin did.

I don't know what you paid for those as used, but those are very expensive trains when bought new. These are top of the line German trains, and they are still made entirely in Goppingen, Baden-Württemberg, Germany.

E-bay is always an option if you're careful. Trainz.com is another source. Make certain the Märklin transformer you buy is for US voltage and frequency.

That's a Marklin AC train set and track.
The sliders you see on the bottom of the engine trucks pick up power from the center "3rd rail" (which is not "a rail", but is instead those little pins you see on the center of the ties).

You CAN'T use this with a "normal" HO DC power pack (which supplies DC voltage to the 2 rails).
It requires a Marklin AC transformer/power pack that sends AC to the rails.

BE SURE you make that clear if you put this set up for sale.
